Chapter 5

Penulis: Ginger John
Suddenly, a commotion broke out not far away.

We looked over, and there was Owen, dressed in a silver-gray suit. He looked relaxed with a faint smile on his face. His arm was linked with Robin's, and she was smiling proudly.

I thought when Owen said he'd be accompanying Robin, it was just to go shopping or something. Turned out, he was accompanying her to this banquet.

My eyes fell on Robin's dress. It was a fishtail gown, the same one as I had ordered.

When I placed the order, I was told it was the only one of its kind in the country. So, how did Robin have one? Shipped overnight from abroad?

Owen was clearly trying to make me uncomfortable. Sure enough, as soon as Robin saw me, her smile vanished. She bit her lip and whispered something to Owen, who then turned to look at me.

In high heels, Robin strutted over and glared at me. "Did you send someone to find out what dress Owen bought for me, just so you could copy it?"

At her voice, the guests in the hall began to gather around us.

Ginevra spoke up. "Don't talk nonsense."

Unfazed, Robin scoffed, "You're just jealous because Owen treats me so well. The way you're going about this is disgusting, and let's be honest, you don't even look as good as I do."

Ginevra muttered quietly, "Actually, you look worse."

Robin returned to Owen's side and stomped her foot. "Owen, look at them!"

Owen looked fixedly at me for a while before a smirk tugged at his lips.

Just then, comments flashed across my mind.

[Ahhh, Owen smiled! He thinks you look better!]

[His eyes say it all! You're bound to be together! Invite me to your wedding!]

[Wait. He is probably just teasing you, so you'd go find him. Later he will...]

I was still trying to figure out the meaning of the last comment when suddenly, the microphone crackled.

Everyone looked over, and there on the stage stood the senior secretary from the Lockhart Group.

Holding a microphone and a card, he announced, "Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for attending this banquet. Taking this chance, I'd like to make an important announcement. Per a decision made by Mr. Owen Lockhart and the board of directors, 2% of the Lockhart Group's shares will be unconditionally gifted to Miss Robin Peck."

The room erupted in shock. I looked up, disbelief flooding through me.

Owen held certain shares in the company, though I didn't know exactly how much. But this 2% was meant for his future wife.

It seemed to be a small percentage, but the dividends were considerable. Yet he had not only given it to Robin but also had it announced in public.

The comments went wild.

[Here comes the crazy move! Poor you, being watched and ridiculed by everyone. Have to go beg him.]

[Exactly, and then you'll be stuck by his side, endlessly at his mercy.]

[What are you still holding onto? Owen loves you so much. Go slap Robin and cling to Owen.]

Under the mocking and judgmental gazes, I walked toward Owen, step by step. His eyes never left me.

When I reached him, he lowered his gaze and curled his lips.

I smirked, each word deliberate. "The engagement annulment agreement is already on its way. It won't be long before it's in your hands. As for the cooperation with the Vega Group, you can decide that on your own. I'm done here."

  • Heart Toward the Sky   Chapter 14

One day, in the parking lot, just as I locked my car, a sharp knife was thrust toward me. But the pain I expected never came. Someone from the other side pushed me away in time. The damp, rusty smell in the air made me wrinkle my nose. I looked up at the person holding the knife. It was Garrett, his face twisted with fury. "I raised you for nothing! I'll kill you, you ungrateful wretch!"Owen, holding his bleeding stomach, shoved Garrett away. Soon, security guards arrived to restrain Garrett.I locked eyes with him coldly. "I'm cursed to have a father like you."He was dragged away, frantically struggling, but it was all in vain."Spend the rest of your life in prison," I added.Out of some sense of humanity, I took Owen to the hospital. All the way there, he clung to my hand, sweat beading on his forehead from the pain in his side."Did you promise him money, just so you could play the hero saving me?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. He was incredulous, his fingers trembling.

The barrage of comments, which hadn't appeared in a while, suddenly flooded my mind. Compared to before, though, this time they were much slower, almost hesitant.I could feel the uncertainty in the comments.[This plot doesn't seem right.][What's wrong with it? I didn't dare say anything before when so many people supported Owen, but now I've had enough. How could he be worthy of Chloe?][Exactly. Owen didn't sleep with Robin, and he didn't like her at all. His closeness to her was just to make Chloe jealous. But he did spend a lot of money on her, and that bothers me.][To be fair, the money Owen spent on her was meant to make Chloe jealous, so doesn't that technically mean he spent it on Chloe?][Are you serious? Is your brain working?][Come on. The current ending isn't that bad, right?][Honestly, I wish for all the leads to end up happily together. But in this situation, it's not bad for Chloe to stay independent.]That was right. Why should I be tied to Owen? Couldn't

Owen sounded hurt. "I don't want anything, but they insist on sending it. Just like how you don't want to, but I insist on giving it."I ignored him and continued to work on my problems.Later, when I couldn't participate in the long-distance race at the sports meet, everyone said, "You're the class leader. You need to set an example. Just keep running, and you'll make it."Owen slammed his fist down on the table. "She's not running, so what? Are you going to force her? If we're short a runner, I'll put on a dress and do it for her."Everyone went quiet, and after that, I started being kinder to him.We went to school and played video games together. I helped him with his homework. He called me Coco intimately, bringing me stuffed animals. "So fluffy, so cute."Then one day, his face was full of sorrow."What's wrong?" I asked."My mom wants me to get engaged, but I'm still so young," he replied.I comforted him. "It's not a bad thing. It's a good match between families.""W

I handed Owen the engagement annulment agreement, and in return, he gave me a share transfer agreement.Along with it came a necklace, each diamond set in it gleaming in the light. It was almost blinding.I checked recent auction prices, finding out that this item was worth several more zeros than the one I had originally wanted. Then I flipped through the share transfer agreement. Owen had given me all his shares in the company, leaving himself with nothing.I took him off my blacklist and called him. "Have you thought this through? If I sell all the shares, the Lockhart Group's stock price, control, and cash flow will all be in trouble.""Coco," he murmured. He hadn't called me that since high school."If you want to keep them, the money is all yours. If you don't, selling them off is an option too," he said with a bitter smile. "It's all up to you.""If I were your parents or relatives, I would have just had you cut off," I scoffed. There was a long pause before he said, "I

Lorne smiled helplessly. "If you want to think that way, fine."Owen punched him, and he groaned, "Damn! Take it easy!"All tied up, he was unable to defend himself. He could only take punch after punch until he was barely conscious. He muttered weakly, "I-I'm going to tell your dad."Owen called his assistant and ordered an ambulance. I just watched coldly from the sidelines. The room was cleaned up. It was just Owen and me again."Don't you understand human words?" I started. "I never played hard-to-get or tried to make you jealous. I said I had someone I liked, so you'd give up. I don't love you anymore, and I don't want you to keep pestering me. Got it?"He froze, and I pointed to the spot where Lorne had just been lying. All the anger and disappointment that had built up inside me exploded."You had him drug me, so you could be the hero who saves the day. Don't you feel disgusted with yourself? I'm ashamed I ever liked you!" I snapped. My voice rose too high, and I had to

I wondered if Owen had sent Lorne over to spy on me.Just then, the barrage of comments popped up, interrupting my thoughts.[So, this stranger is Owen's cousin? Wait, he wasn't in the original plot.][Owen is so conflicted. He wants Lorne to keep an eye on you, but he's afraid you might really get close to Lorne.][Owen was seriously mad last night. Even though he knew it was his cousin, he was still so angry. The moment he saw a guy near you, it broke him.][Don't worry. You'll be back with him soon. Lorne is going to spike your milk, and Owen will swoop in to save you. You'll fall for him hard.]I blinked, confused.Just then, there was a knock on the door. I opened it, and there stood Loren, grinning."Good morning, Chloe." He shook a bag in his hand. "I figured you might not like the breakfast here, so I brought you some homemade food."I took the bag from him with a smile. "Thank you."I stepped aside to let him in and had him sit down. I had already given his number to
