LOGIN“Wait, what?”
“Which one of the boyfriends? She has a lot of them; boys are like toys for her.”
Oh wow. Well then, I guess that was expected.
“Uh… the uh… the hockey one? I mean, I think he plays hockey. I saw him with his gear outside…” I paused, deciding that I didn’t want anyone to know that Kendall’s boyfriend was my next-door neighbour. The way I saw it, I couldn’t trust anyone.
Especially Lea, who was too eager to talk.
“Wait!” she said, her eyes widening excitedly. “You don’t mean Theo Evans, do you?”
I didn’t know his name, but I nodded. “Tall, dark hair, hazel green eyes…” I paused when I saw the way Lea was staring at me. Then she smiled, and I began to worry about the state of her mental health. “What is going on?”
“That girl is such a bitch!” she laughed. “Yup, that’s Theo. He is her boyfriend all right, but I swear she’s fucking other guys on the side.”
“Not that I care anyway,” I shrugged. “I just don’t understand why she has it out for me. I don’t care who she fucks or who she doesn’t…”
“Uhm, honey, we are talking about Theo Evans here. He is the hottest boy in school.”
“And obviously too full of himself,” I rolled my eyes.
“As he should be. Look at him!” she pointed in the direction Kendall had gone.
Their clique had 2 tables to themselves.
“Those boys on that table are the hottest boys in school. To have them look at you, I mean, just look at you, is a fucking dream. Trust all the girls in class would die to have them, even the juniors.”
“Except that Kendall, Briella and Trish have claimed them for themselves,” Leo piped in as he spooned some of his apple pie into his mouth.
“Those bitches. Anyway, the hottest of them all is Theo,” she squealed.
“Wait, don’t tell me you have a crush on him?” I asked with a raised brow.
She gave me a look like I was crazy. “Duh! I would be blind not to. He is the captain of the hockey team, the pride of our school and the most handsome boy in school… wait!” She frowned at me, “Don’t tell me you’re gay?”
“That wouldn’t stop me from seeing that he is cute.”
When she smiled, I realised the trap that she had just expertly set for me.
“Yes, he is cute,” I confessed. “But he also happens to be a piss of shit.”
“Well, when you have every girl in school drooling over you, you’re allowed to be a piss of shit.”
“Not when you try to kiss someone against her will!”
Our table suddenly turned silent. I shouldn’t have said that.
That should have been my secret.
Lea’s reaction to my outburst was scaring me because why was she staring at me like that? For a moment, I thought she wished she were in my shoes, and she was the one Theo had tried to kiss instead.
Then she smiled slowly again. Seriously, send help because this girl is creepy.
“Theo tried to kiss you?”
I nodded.
“And?”
“And what? Nothing happened. I – I punched his face.”
She looked like she was going to faint. All of a sudden, she began to laugh aloud.
“No way. No fucking way!”
She laughed so long that Leo had to cover her mouth and force her head on the table.
“I’m okay. I’m okay,” she said as she laughed. “I’m just … wow, Jade, are you the best thing that happened in this school or what? Are you immune to Theo, or you’re just blind?”
“It’s not every day we see a girl who doesn’t have an instant crush on Captain Jawline,” Leo said. I didn’t miss the way he looked at me like he respected me.
He wouldn’t look like that if he knew that I initially started with a crush on Captain Jawline.
“Nah, unless that girl is sick.” She stared pointedly at me. “Or gay.”
I wasn’t about to get into an argument with her about my sexuality, so I just rolled my eyes and picked my spoon off my skirt. Thankfully, the yoghurt didn’t leave a permanent stain.
“What will you do then?” Lea asked.
“About what?”
“About Kendall. Look, she’s out to get you. No one crosses Kendall and goes free. She’s going to make school hell for you. Your only option is to switch schools because trust me, Kendall is vicious.”
“You sound like you guys have history.”
“Oh, honey, trust me, a day is not enough to say everything she has done to Leo and me. You can choose to go or stay and suffer.”
“It can’t be that bad?”
“Are you sure about that?” she asked as she looked in Kendall’s direction.
Sure enough, Kendall was giving me the stink eye even though she literally had her hand in Theo’s, and he was giving the back of her hand a kiss.
“She can do whatever she wants. I don’t care.”
“What about what you saw this morning? Are you going to tell Principal Houston about it?”
“I don’t care about that. I told Kendall already, I don’t care about her business. Look,” I let out a breath because I was sick to death of the conversation. “Before I came here, I wasn’t the type of girl who cared about drama or being the centre of attention. I sure as hell didn’t change that when I moved here. Besides, it’s cold as fuck here. I care more about getting warm than getting into a fight about one boy.”
“Unless that boy is interested in you too,” Lea said singsong – like.
When I frowned at her, she jerked her head toward Kendall’s table again. I looked, but Theo looked away as soon as I did.
“It doesn’t mean anything,” I said, feeling a flutter in my chest. “He’s probably wondering how he can get back at me for hitting him.”
“Yeah, that’s not the kind of look you give someone when you want to punch them. It’s the kind you give someone you are kinda, sorta having a crush on.”
“Right.”
“Right?” Leo laughed. “Besides, Theo is a playboy. He likes to hit on every single girl in school.”
“Except me. He never hit on me!” Lea argued.
“Yeah, because you were the only girl who gave him a pair of her socks when other girls were giving him chocolates and heart-shaped pancakes.”
“That was in 3rd grade! And I sprayed Mom’s perfume in it too. I wanted him to wear it to bed, thinking about me.”
Leo made a face as he turned to me, and I tried not to laugh.
“You can laugh all you want, but I still think you should use this information to your advantage. Ask Theo for a kiss, and if he says no, tell him you’ll tell Principal Houston what you say.”
“Okay, hell no. There’s no way I’m going to do that.”
“You’re kidding,” she said.
“And you’re mad,” I shot back. “You know what? I think I’m full. I don’t care enough about Kendall or Theo or hockey to sit at this table anymore. I guess I’ll see you in class.”
I stood up and left the cafeteria. They were definitely insane. I knew there was a reason I didn’t want to come to this state, this school. Everyone is fucking crazy.
I knew I was nervous since Theo was coming for dinner, but the moment Dad opened the door to admit Theo and his Mom into the living room, I wished the ground would open up and swallow me whole. And wow, Theo cleaned up nicely.Gone was the basketball outfit. He wore a pair of jeans with a dark red shirt that turned his eyes a darker shade. He looked over at me, and I had to cross my arms in front of my chest to pretend that I was unaffected by his looks. His mom was a beautiful woman with hair like his. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail. She wore a lovely sundress that matched her son’s shirt, but she wore a coat over it to ward off the cold.“Hi, good evening,” she greeted, her smile as bright as her eyes. “Thank you for having us for dinner tonight. Here, I brought dessert.”She handed Dad a platter of pie. It smelled delicious.“Thank you.”Dad collected it. He also collected her coat and hung it.“This is my son, Theodore.”Theo stepped forward to shake Dad’s hand. “Good ev
I entered the kitchen and immediately groaned when I saw Harry leaning against the counter, looking all innocent until he broke into a smile and started to wag his eyebrows.“Don’t!” I warned. “Don’t even start! I’m still going to get you, just so you know.”“I didn’t even say anything!” he whined, raising his hands.“That’s what you should have done out there. Still can’t believe Dad made you move over here with us.”“Because I’m family? Besides, you were the one who wanted to stay back in Sunder, not me. But aren’t you glad you’re here now? Look at you, the star of the hockey team knows your name!”“Yeah, I’m sure that’s newsworthy information. Hang on, let me call the news for this,” I rolled my eyes. “Seriously, I can’t believe you fucking outed me!”“Theo doesn’t seem to mind.”“Because I’m a nobody, that’s why. I’m not a threat, nor am I popular kid material.”“That’s because you try so hard not to be.”I glared at him. “Okay, am I dreaming, or are you actually talking to me lik
I glanced over my shoulder to make sure that my nosy brother was not peeking from any window to see me sneaking up on the boy next door. The one I vowed to hate.Don’t get me wrong, I hate him. He is cocky, arrogant and smug. And don’t forget that he tried to kiss me!He may be all these things that I hate, but I am not blind, nor am I an idiot. He is cute, and oh my goodness, I didn’t know he was that hot under his uniform. No wonder Kendell is so protective of him. I would be too if I got to fu – touch! Touch that body every day.I crept closer, making sure to pick my steps carefully on the green grass. My footsteps were muffled thanks to the wetness of the grass. I made my way closer to the fence, ducking slightly so that he wouldn’t see me if he looked over by chance. It was cold as hell, but then again, he was working out, so his body was covered in a fine sheen of sweat, causing his basketball shirt to cling to his body. He wore a pair of matching shorts that showed off his stro
Mom’s fingers wrapped around my arm. “Theo, look at me. Theo!”Her voice was firmer the second time she called my name. I couldn’t think through my anger; the red haze was there again, threatening to blind me.“Theo.”It was the tremor in her voice that finally pulled me out of the darkness.Mom caressed my arm and my back. “You are not him. You will never be like him.”I closed my eyes for a moment, forcing myself to breathe. It came slowly. With every bit of anger that drained out of my body, I felt my shoulders relax, and my fists unclench.“I – I’m okay, Mom.”She rubbed my back again. “You’re tense.”“I’m okay, I just gotta… I will work out for a bit.”I would also have to get my anger out somehow. I thought about texting Kendall, but a better idea occurred to me. That girl at school today. I could call her up and drive her to the mall.I swung my bag back over my shoulders and started to head up to my room, with Mom watching me go. I swung open my door, and sure enough, the enve
The final bell went off, and the sound of chairs scraping the floor filled the air.Out in the corridor, students poured out of their classes, filling the hall.Ms. Pascal came into the hall before anyone from our class could leave.“Who are those on cleaning duty today?”She walked over to the roster on the wall and, using the tip of her pen, traced a line down until she got to the names.“Brielle Houston and Theo Everson. Get the class cleaned as soon as possible. We are keeping the neatest class award until your class graduates. Is that understood?”“Yes, Ms. Pascal,” Brielle said a little too cheerfully as she cut a glance at me.She was being way too obvious. It was a miracle Kendall hadn’t suspected a thing at all.Nate came over to my table. “Hey, dude,” he raised his hand for a dap. I took it and used it as an anchor to rise.“Hey, man, can you do me a favour?”“Nope, I’m not going to do your homework for you again.”“It’s not that,” I nudged his shoulder. “Look, I have to be
THEO’S POV“So what are you going to do about her?”My heart skipped at the question.Did she know?I looked over at Briella. She had heard the question too, and she looked up from her lunch, but when she caught my gaze, she dropped her eyes to her tray, her fork stabbing at her broccoli.“Who?” I turned to Kendall. She didn’t suspect a single thing.I’ve been with Kendall long enough to know when she’s suspicious. Her nostrils would flare, and a vein would throb on her temple.“The new girl,” she whispered. “That girl’s going to tell Principal Houston what she saw, I just know it.”“She’s not.”“Oh, come on, don’t give me that cocky answer. She’s the new kid, guess what they love to do? I’m not going to take my chances, Theo. All it takes is one word to Ms. Harden, and we’ll get into trouble. You’ll get into bigger trouble if the Principal hears about it.”I was in bigger trouble than she could even think of. Sex in the bathroom was the least of my worries when I was trying hard to k
I guess that was enough to convince Jerk Face that I was the devil’s incarnate because he stopped trying to rizz me up with his poor ‘charming’ skills. He turned to his friends, and I didn’t miss the way they turned to me while he whispered something to them.I made a face at them and stared right
I couldn’t get away quick enough, but as luck would have it, as soon as I turned away from the door, I ran into someone else. I was nearly bodied to the ground.Seriously, if I bump into anyone else again, I might need to get a helmet.“I understand running in the hallway, but do students close the
“Ugh, Jade, can you hurry up?! We’re going to be late for school!” Harry called from downstairs, sounding increasingly annoying with every syllable.“I said I’m coming! And shut up already!” I yelled back as I drew a perfectly winged eyeliner.“Come shut me up,” he snarled, sounding like the little
I never wanted to change schools, not because I had made great friends in my previous school or because I couldn’t imagine leaving Sunders’ Senior High, no. None of that.In fact, I absolutely hate being in school. The only thing I actually love is being in my room, ignoring my obnoxious younger br
