REBECCA’S POV

This is exactly why I don’t break my own rules.

Never trust anyone but yourself. Ever.

And yet—I let my guard down. I trusted someone. I got involved in their mess.

Now look at me.

Sitting behind freaking bars.

I scanned the cold, empty cell and let out a heavy sigh. My breath echoed in the stillness.

My head dropped as my arms slacked on my lap. Eyes fixed on the floor beneath me.

“I swear to God, Alyssa… when I get out of here, I’ll—”

I stopped myself and gently closed my eyes.

That damn image of her son popped into my head again.

Just a kid. Still soft around the edges.

Too bad he had a mother like that. Or a father. Whatever you want to call that disaster of a human.

Maybe—just maybe—the only reason I wouldn’t go after her is because of that little boy.

But don’t get it twisted. That doesn’t mean she’s off the hook.

Nobody messes with me and walks away clean.

There’s always a price.
