Anson Lyndhurst paused and sighed.

"When I found out she was cheating, I was bitter too. I made a scene and asked for a divorce. She even spent a whole week on her knees by my hospital bed, begging me to take her back.

"And what happened? She never stopped taking lovers. You aren't the first, and Rory Castellan won't be the last. Give it up. Use this chance to walk away while you can still get a generous settlement out of it."

Gabriel Sutcliffe instinctively objected. "I'm not in it for the money. My feelings for Eleanor are real."

However, when he met Anson's calm, knowing gaze, he fell silent in guilt and looked away.

A moment later, he gritted his teeth. "I want $50 million and an apartment in Ambermoor."

Anson smiled and handed him a nondisclosure agreement.

Gabriel signed it with a mocking expression.

"I heard you asked for $50 million too before you agreed not to divorce her, Anson. Eleanor's lovers have come and gone all these years, but you, the son of a gambling addict and a bar hostess, have held on to your place as her husband thanks to her favoritism. You must be pretty pleased with yourself, huh?"

Anson put the agreement away and lowered his eyes to hide his self-mockery. His voice was quiet.

"I'm nothing special to Eleanor. I just got here first."

After leaving the hospital, he went straight back to the Vandermeer mansion.

He had barely taken off his shoes when someone pressed against his back in a heated embrace.

He turned around and looked down.

Eleanor Vandermeer carried herself with aristocratic poise, and she had the sated, languid look of a woman fresh from a lover's bed. She rested a slender hand on his waist and spoke with a careless, apologetic note.

"Gabriel was completely out of line. I'm sorry he put you through all that trouble. I'll make it up to you, I promise."

Anson said nothing.

Eleanor's idea of making it up to him never amounted to more than a few pricey luxury items.

All of Saltmere believed he stayed with Eleanor for her money.

Eleanor also believed he could forgive her betrayal with enough money. Over the years, she had grown increasingly brazen about her affairs and the lovers she kept, no longer bothering to hide any of it.

"Taking care of my wife's problems is part of my job as the Vandermeer husband. There's nothing to make up for."

He calmly pushed her hand away and held out a stack of documents.

"Gabriel wants the Ambermoor apartment you two used to share. The contract's already drawn up. Just sign it."

Eleanor did not even glance at it before picking up a pen and signing her name with a flourish.

She tossed the pen aside, caught Anson's wrist in the same motion, and pulled him closer.

"Don't you want to know how I'm going to make it up to you?"

Before Anson could answer, she rose onto her toes, a barely perceptible hint of anticipation in her voice.

"We've been married for seven years. It's time we had a child. Anson, let's have an heir."

For a moment, Anson was stunned. Having an heir meant Eleanor was promising to share everything she owned with him.

However, if he had never discovered her affair back then, their first child would already be five years old.

His gaze swept pointedly over the obvious hickey on her neck, and he stepped back, his tone stiff.

"It's late. Go take a shower and get some rest. There's no rush to have a baby."

Eleanor followed his gaze, noticed the mark on herself, and complained with a helpless sigh, "Rory is so much like you were back then. He came from nothing, but he's stubborn and possessive, and he's always leaving marks on me. I'll talk to him later and tell him to tone it down."

She stroked Anson's cheek, her laugh carrying a coaxing note.

"You're still the best husband anyone could ask for, so mature, steady and gracious. It's been ages since I've seen you jealous over me. I'll go wash off that other man's scent right now, okay?"

With that, she turned and headed upstairs.

Anson sighed softly. "It's fine. I don't mind."

Eleanor was already upstairs, and there was no telling whether she had heard him.

Anson truly did not mind.

Today was the last time he would clean up the mess from one of Eleanor's affairs, and the last time he would play her respectable husband.

When Eleanor cheated a second time, whatever feelings he still had for her died completely. He had demanded $50 million to stay in the marriage, not out of greed, but to secure life-extending medical treatment overseas for his gravely ill grandmother.

However, a few days ago, his grandmother had passed away, and with her went his last reason for staying by Eleanor's side.

Anson looked down at the documents Eleanor had just signed, and a relieved smile tugged at his lips.

Hidden at the bottom of that stack was a divorce agreement.

"Get lost!"Imogen made a phone call, and security rushed in to clear a path.Anson kept his head down and held the urn even tighter.Marian was waiting for him at the harbor. She had stood there waiting for three days. When she saw Anson get out of the car, she stumbled toward him, took his hand, and burst into tears."Anson, did she say anything before she left?"Anson looked at her. She had so much of Eleanor in her face."She said she had a lot of regrets in this life, but she hoped we'd meet again in an

Late one night in Brightwater, Eleanor sat in her apartment, her computer screen glowing in front of her.The email went through. It was her 367th.Anson had never replied to any of them, but she still wrote to him every day. She told him what she had eaten, who she had seen, that it had rained in Brightwater, and that the maple leaves outside her apartment building had turned red.Her phone suddenly rang.Imogen's voice came through, low and urgent. "The medical station is surrounded, and communications have been down for three days. The last signal came from the mountains near the border. There are at least two hundred armed militants."Eleanor shot to her feet."Send me the coordinates.""I'm already in touch with a private security team," Imogen said. "Clementine is pulling together her own people. We leave in three hours."Eleanor hung up, booked a flight, and packed. She moved so fast that she barely registered what she was doing.Three hours later, three helicopters too

On the day his yearlong fellowship ended, Anson received his certificate of completion and made a decision.Clementine came running over. "Doc, let's celebrate tonight! I already reserved a spot at a great restaurant!"Anson shook his head. "I'm leaving tomorrow."Clementine froze. "Leaving? For where?""I'm joining a medical aid mission in a conflict zone." He tucked the certificate into his bag.Clementine practically jumped. "Doc, are you out of your mind? That's a war zone! Bullets and bombs don't care who you are. What are you going there for?"Anson said nothing.Imogen walked up from behind, clearly having heard the whole exchange. She frowned deeply. "It's too dangerous. I'm against it.""I don't need your permission." Anson looked at her. "This is my choice."Imogen took a deep breath and kept her emotions in check. "The medical conditions there are terrible, and fighting could break out at any moment. Do you know the death rate for aid doctors?""I do.""And you're

Eleanor stood outside Anson's apartment building. The cigarette in her hand had burned down to the filter, singeing her fingertips. She had just gotten off the phone with her mother."Rory has lost his mind," Marian had said with a sigh. "That heiress got bored of him and threw him out. Now he's in the hospital shouting, 'I'm Eleanor Vandermeer's husband,' all day long. What a mess."He did hurt Anson, I know that. But doing that to him, Eleanor..." Marian paused. "Forget it. You'll have to live with what you've done."Then the line went dead.Eleanor crushed the cigarette and lit another.Rory had lost his mind. She thought of him standing in front of her in that white suit, his face so much like Anson's when he sweet-talked her, and the call she had missed on the night of the hurricane.Anson had been in that crumbling building, feverish and bleeding, calling her for help.Rory had answered behind her back, then seduced her even more eagerly and led her into saying all tho

Eleanor really did not leave.Early the next morning, when Anson opened the door, she was standing there with breakfast in her hand."Eggs Benedict and hash browns, just like from that diner you used to love," she said. "I had my kitchen practice it for three months."Anson glanced at her, took the breakfast, and dropped it in the trash right in front of her."Don't bring any more."Eleanor nodded and said nothing. That afternoon, when he got off work, she was waiting outside, ten steps away. When he got into a car, she got into hers. When he arrived at his apartment building, so did she.Clementine was crouched by his apartment door. When she saw this, she sprang to her feet. "Old lady, are you some kind of stalker?"Eleanor ignored her, pulled a bag of groceries from her trunk, and headed straight upstairs. When Anson opened his door, she followed him in, set the groceries down in the kitchen, and started washing vegetables and cutting meat."What are you doing?""Making d

  • Helping Out My Wife’s Boyfriends   Chapter 13

When Anson opened his apartment door and saw Eleanor standing there, his first instinct was to shut it.She threw out a hand to stop it, and the door hit her palm with a dull thud."Anson, I've been looking for you for three months."Her eyes were red, dark circles shadowed them, and her coat was hopelessly wrinkled. The proud, untouchable Eleanor he once knew was gone, and the woman standing at his door was a complete mess.Anson looked at her, his tone flat. "What are you looking for me for? Didn't you get the divorce decree?""I regret it.""That's your problem." He stepped back, ready to close the door. She stayed in the doorway and refused to leave.Early the next morning, Anson opened his door to find breakfast waiting outside. There was hot coffee, a sandwich, and a note.[I was wrong.]He picked it all up and threw it in the trash. On the third day, it was a hearty home-cooked breakfast instead, with eggs, bacon, and buttered toast that was still warm.He threw that
