Chapter 2

Author: Mimi Wood
The rush of the shower drowned out every other sound in the house.

Anson walked quietly down the hallway and slipped into the study.

To keep anything from going wrong, he scanned the divorce agreement and emailed it to his lawyer, then made a point of calling Eleanor's mother.

Marian Vandermeer was in the middle of a card game with a few old friends. She sounded impatient when she picked up.

"Anson? Whatever it is, make it quick."

Anson softened his tone, his voice calm and even.

"I tricked Eleanor into signing a divorce agreement, and I'm walking away with nothing. I'd appreciate it if you could keep this from her and help me push it through as quickly as possible."

"Are you sure about this?"

Marian was taken aback. After a few seconds of silence, she let out a heavy sigh.

"Back then, I looked down on your background and refused to let you into this family. Eleanor cut ties with all of us and crammed herself into a run-down rental in the slums just to marry you. The whole city was talking about it.

"In the end, you knelt on the steps of St. Alder's Chapel for three days and three nights to pass my test, and only then did the two of you get your happy ending.

"You made it through the hardest trials. What's so bad about the easy life you have now? If it's Eleanor's lovers that bother you, I thought you'd have figured it out long ago. Money and status matter more than love, and at least you're the only husband Eleanor will ever legally acknowledge."

Anson lowered his eyes and put on a silent, bitter smile.

"When I married Eleanor, all I wanted was to hear her say she loved me. Once I had her heart, I couldn't stand her betrayal and her endless affairs.

"Besides, a Vandermeer husband doesn't get a career of his own. I didn't graduate top of my class from Saltmere University's medical school to become a pampered trophy husband who keeps the home running for Eleanor, and I certainly didn't do it to spend my life as nothing more than Eleanor's husband."

Since he had made himself so clear, Marian did not push any further. She sighed softly.

"All right. I'll do it."

"Thank you." Anson's gratitude carried a lightness he had not felt in a long time. "Once the divorce is final, I'm going to Westmarch to continue my training, and I'm never coming back."

The moment he finished speaking, soft footsteps came behind him.

His heart clenched, and he hung up quickly.

When he turned around, Eleanor was already standing right behind him. Her black robe hung loosely open, offering glimpses of bare skin, and water droplets slid down her jawline to her collarbone.

Her eyes darkened slightly. "Who are you talking to this late?"

"No one important." Anson calmly put his phone away, a faint smile on his face. "I was just going over tomorrow's schedule with the housekeeper."

Eleanor did not suspect a thing. She slid an arm around his waist, and her warm, damp heat from the shower enveloped him.

Intense possessiveness burned in her eyes. She rose onto her toes and kissed his cheek, her voice tender yet commanding.

"Didn't you say you wanted to have an heir with me? You should save some energy and put a little more effort in when we're in bed."

Anson stiffened.

He had assumed Eleanor only mentioned having a baby on a whim. He never expected her to mean it.

The next second, Eleanor pulled him toward the bedroom.

She pushed him onto the bed, and the mattress sank softly beneath him as she covered his body with hers, her scorching breath engulfing him.

It was as if she had rediscovered the passion of their early days together. She held him close and would not stop.

However, the closer their bodies got, the colder Anson felt inside.

He could not understand how Eleanor could spend her day in bed with her lover and then turn to her husband at night with such devotion and hunger.

Her promiscuity was laughable, and her hypocrisy was glaring.

In the early hours of the morning, Anson quietly got up and went into the bathroom to clean up, then tucked the condoms back into the drawer.

The first and only child he and Eleanor had ever conceived died a terrible death.

That day, he had just received Eleanor's prenatal checkup report. At six weeks along, the baby's heartbeat had been detected for the first time.

He went to Eleanor's company to share the good news in person, only to walk in on her and her secretary together in her office.

The two of them got so carried away that the baby's heart simply stopped beating. There was no chance to even save it.

From then on, his heart went cold, and he no longer wanted a child with Eleanor.

With the divorce so close, Eleanor could not get pregnant now more than ever.

Behind him, the door suddenly opened.

Anson froze and spun around.

Eleanor stood in the doorway, her face terrifyingly dark, her eyes locked on the condoms in his hand.

"Anson, what are you doing?"

Late one night in Brightwater, Eleanor sat in her apartment, her computer screen glowing in front of her.The email went through. It was her 367th.Anson had never replied to any of them, but she still wrote to him every day. She told him what she had eaten, who she had seen, that it had rained in Brightwater, and that the maple leaves outside her apartment building had turned red.Her phone suddenly rang.Imogen's voice came through, low and urgent. "The medical station is surrounded, and communications have been down for three days. The last signal came from the mountains near the border. There are at least two hundred armed militants."Eleanor shot to her feet."Send me the coordinates.""I'm already in touch with a private security team," Imogen said. "Clementine is pulling together her own people. We leave in three hours."Eleanor hung up, booked a flight, and packed. She moved so fast that she barely registered what she was doing.Three hours later, three helicopters too

On the day his yearlong fellowship ended, Anson received his certificate of completion and made a decision.Clementine came running over. "Doc, let's celebrate tonight! I already reserved a spot at a great restaurant!"Anson shook his head. "I'm leaving tomorrow."Clementine froze. "Leaving? For where?""I'm joining a medical aid mission in a conflict zone." He tucked the certificate into his bag.Clementine practically jumped. "Doc, are you out of your mind? That's a war zone! Bullets and bombs don't care who you are. What are you going there for?"Anson said nothing.Imogen walked up from behind, clearly having heard the whole exchange. She frowned deeply. "It's too dangerous. I'm against it.""I don't need your permission." Anson looked at her. "This is my choice."Imogen took a deep breath and kept her emotions in check. "The medical conditions there are terrible, and fighting could break out at any moment. Do you know the death rate for aid doctors?""I do.""And you're

Eleanor stood outside Anson's apartment building. The cigarette in her hand had burned down to the filter, singeing her fingertips. She had just gotten off the phone with her mother."Rory has lost his mind," Marian had said with a sigh. "That heiress got bored of him and threw him out. Now he's in the hospital shouting, 'I'm Eleanor Vandermeer's husband,' all day long. What a mess."He did hurt Anson, I know that. But doing that to him, Eleanor..." Marian paused. "Forget it. You'll have to live with what you've done."Then the line went dead.Eleanor crushed the cigarette and lit another.Rory had lost his mind. She thought of him standing in front of her in that white suit, his face so much like Anson's when he sweet-talked her, and the call she had missed on the night of the hurricane.Anson had been in that crumbling building, feverish and bleeding, calling her for help.Rory had answered behind her back, then seduced her even more eagerly and led her into saying all tho

Eleanor really did not leave.Early the next morning, when Anson opened the door, she was standing there with breakfast in her hand."Eggs Benedict and hash browns, just like from that diner you used to love," she said. "I had my kitchen practice it for three months."Anson glanced at her, took the breakfast, and dropped it in the trash right in front of her."Don't bring any more."Eleanor nodded and said nothing. That afternoon, when he got off work, she was waiting outside, ten steps away. When he got into a car, she got into hers. When he arrived at his apartment building, so did she.Clementine was crouched by his apartment door. When she saw this, she sprang to her feet. "Old lady, are you some kind of stalker?"Eleanor ignored her, pulled a bag of groceries from her trunk, and headed straight upstairs. When Anson opened his door, she followed him in, set the groceries down in the kitchen, and started washing vegetables and cutting meat."What are you doing?""Making d

When Anson opened his apartment door and saw Eleanor standing there, his first instinct was to shut it.She threw out a hand to stop it, and the door hit her palm with a dull thud."Anson, I've been looking for you for three months."Her eyes were red, dark circles shadowed them, and her coat was hopelessly wrinkled. The proud, untouchable Eleanor he once knew was gone, and the woman standing at his door was a complete mess.Anson looked at her, his tone flat. "What are you looking for me for? Didn't you get the divorce decree?""I regret it.""That's your problem." He stepped back, ready to close the door. She stayed in the doorway and refused to leave.Early the next morning, Anson opened his door to find breakfast waiting outside. There was hot coffee, a sandwich, and a note.[I was wrong.]He picked it all up and threw it in the trash. On the third day, it was a hearty home-cooked breakfast instead, with eggs, bacon, and buttered toast that was still warm.He threw that
