Chapter 3

Author: Mimi Wood
Anson quickly hid the box behind his back and forced himself to stay calm. "Nothing."

"Nothing?"

Eleanor let out a cold laugh and strode over. She snatched the box from his hand, and her eyes turned icy the moment she read the label.

"Anson, have you been using protection this whole time?"

Every time she had been lost in the heat of the moment, Anson had quietly made sure she would not get pregnant.

Her voice dropped dangerously low, thick with the fury of someone who had been deceived.

"You never wanted to have a baby with me at all, did you?"

Anson lowered his eyes, his tone flat. "I'm just not ready yet."

"Enough!"

Eleanor hurled the box to the floor, and condoms scattered everywhere.

Looking at Anson's calm, distant face, she felt an inexplicable surge of anger rush through her, along with a strange sense of panic.

It felt as though the man who used to laugh with her, cry for her, and get jealous over her was gone for good.

"Unbelievable." Eleanor gritted her teeth, her eyes cold. "Anson, you're going to regret this."

With that, she spun around and slammed the door so hard that the bang sent a tremor through the room.

Anson stood rooted to the spot, his eyes completely unmoved.

The truth was that he had regretted it long ago. He regretted ever meeting Eleanor, and he regretted giving her his heart even more.

When morning came, he went downstairs for breakfast. Eleanor did not like having outsiders in the house, so the Vandermeer staff only came in to work during the day.

As usual, he directed the staff to clean the house and tend to the garden, but he turned down every invitation to card games and afternoon teas.

Agnes Mulvaney, the head housekeeper, listened from nearby with a puzzled look.

"Sir, these social events matter for Ms. Vandermeer's business deals. Why are you turning them all down?"

"I won't be going to any of them from now on." Anson closed his planner, his tone even. "Also, Agnes, there are a few things I need to go over with you."

He went through them one by one. He told her which detergent brand Eleanor's dresses had to be washed with, exactly how hot her morning coffee should be, where he kept the recipe for the hangover remedy she needed after business dinners, and which allergy medications to keep on hand when the seasons changed.

The longer Agnes listened, the more uneasy she grew, and she could not help cutting in. "Sir, Ms. Vandermeer has only ever wanted you to handle these things yourself. She never let the rest of us touch them. Why are you telling me all this?"

Anson gave a faint smile.

"I won't be her husband for much longer. From now on, either remind Eleanor to take care of these things herself, or teach them to the new husband."

Agnes's expression changed. Before she could say anything, the sound of a car engine came from outside the front gate.

Not long after, Eleanor walked in on the arm of a young man.

Anson looked up and froze for a moment.

Eleanor had not exaggerated one bit when she said Rory was like a younger Anson.

The young man was simply dressed, with a cool, stubborn air about him. He was exactly who Anson had been during his Saltmere University days, before life wore him down.

Above all, the way he looked at Eleanor mirrored all the adoration and devotion Anson had once felt for her.

Eleanor noticed his lapse, and her smile deepened.

"This is Rory Castellan. Starting today, he'll be living here," she announced to everyone, then made a point of telling the staff, "Treat Mr. Castellan with the same respect you show my husband."

Eleanor had plenty of lovers, but this was the first time she had moved one into the Vandermeer mansion.

The staff exchanged uneasy glances. Was the Vandermeer household really about to get a new man of the house?

Anson, however, acted as if nothing had happened and calmly instructed Agnes, "Go get the room next to Ms. Vandermeer's ready for Mr. Castellan."

"Wait."

Eleanor's face darkened for a moment. She stopped Agnes and closed the distance to Anson in a few strides.

She sighed, her tone carrying a hint of helpless indulgence, though her eyes held little warmth.

"Anson, I really do love you. If you truly don't want a baby, I won't force you."

She paused, and her arm tightened around Rory.

"As it happens, Rory is willing to have one with me. He looks like you, so the baby will look like you too. Once it's born, it'll be listed as yours.

"It's just unfair to Rory. He loves me without complaint and without asking for any official place in my life, yet our child will never even call him Dad. So for the time being, the two of you are going to switch places."

Anson frowned slightly. "What do you mean?"

Eleanor gave him a meaningful look. "It means Rory will be my husband, and you'll move out and be my lover."

Late one night in Brightwater, Eleanor sat in her apartment, her computer screen glowing in front of her.The email went through. It was her 367th.Anson had never replied to any of them, but she still wrote to him every day. She told him what she had eaten, who she had seen, that it had rained in Brightwater, and that the maple leaves outside her apartment building had turned red.Her phone suddenly rang.Imogen's voice came through, low and urgent. "The medical station is surrounded, and communications have been down for three days. The last signal came from the mountains near the border. There are at least two hundred armed militants."Eleanor shot to her feet."Send me the coordinates.""I'm already in touch with a private security team," Imogen said. "Clementine is pulling together her own people. We leave in three hours."Eleanor hung up, booked a flight, and packed. She moved so fast that she barely registered what she was doing.Three hours later, three helicopters too

On the day his yearlong fellowship ended, Anson received his certificate of completion and made a decision.Clementine came running over. "Doc, let's celebrate tonight! I already reserved a spot at a great restaurant!"Anson shook his head. "I'm leaving tomorrow."Clementine froze. "Leaving? For where?""I'm joining a medical aid mission in a conflict zone." He tucked the certificate into his bag.Clementine practically jumped. "Doc, are you out of your mind? That's a war zone! Bullets and bombs don't care who you are. What are you going there for?"Anson said nothing.Imogen walked up from behind, clearly having heard the whole exchange. She frowned deeply. "It's too dangerous. I'm against it.""I don't need your permission." Anson looked at her. "This is my choice."Imogen took a deep breath and kept her emotions in check. "The medical conditions there are terrible, and fighting could break out at any moment. Do you know the death rate for aid doctors?""I do.""And you're

Eleanor stood outside Anson's apartment building. The cigarette in her hand had burned down to the filter, singeing her fingertips. She had just gotten off the phone with her mother."Rory has lost his mind," Marian had said with a sigh. "That heiress got bored of him and threw him out. Now he's in the hospital shouting, 'I'm Eleanor Vandermeer's husband,' all day long. What a mess."He did hurt Anson, I know that. But doing that to him, Eleanor..." Marian paused. "Forget it. You'll have to live with what you've done."Then the line went dead.Eleanor crushed the cigarette and lit another.Rory had lost his mind. She thought of him standing in front of her in that white suit, his face so much like Anson's when he sweet-talked her, and the call she had missed on the night of the hurricane.Anson had been in that crumbling building, feverish and bleeding, calling her for help.Rory had answered behind her back, then seduced her even more eagerly and led her into saying all tho

Eleanor really did not leave.Early the next morning, when Anson opened the door, she was standing there with breakfast in her hand."Eggs Benedict and hash browns, just like from that diner you used to love," she said. "I had my kitchen practice it for three months."Anson glanced at her, took the breakfast, and dropped it in the trash right in front of her."Don't bring any more."Eleanor nodded and said nothing. That afternoon, when he got off work, she was waiting outside, ten steps away. When he got into a car, she got into hers. When he arrived at his apartment building, so did she.Clementine was crouched by his apartment door. When she saw this, she sprang to her feet. "Old lady, are you some kind of stalker?"Eleanor ignored her, pulled a bag of groceries from her trunk, and headed straight upstairs. When Anson opened his door, she followed him in, set the groceries down in the kitchen, and started washing vegetables and cutting meat."What are you doing?""Making d

  • Helping Out My Wife’s Boyfriends   Chapter 13

When Anson opened his apartment door and saw Eleanor standing there, his first instinct was to shut it.She threw out a hand to stop it, and the door hit her palm with a dull thud."Anson, I've been looking for you for three months."Her eyes were red, dark circles shadowed them, and her coat was hopelessly wrinkled. The proud, untouchable Eleanor he once knew was gone, and the woman standing at his door was a complete mess.Anson looked at her, his tone flat. "What are you looking for me for? Didn't you get the divorce decree?""I regret it.""That's your problem." He stepped back, ready to close the door. She stayed in the doorway and refused to leave.Early the next morning, Anson opened his door to find breakfast waiting outside. There was hot coffee, a sandwich, and a note.[I was wrong.]He picked it all up and threw it in the trash. On the third day, it was a hearty home-cooked breakfast instead, with eggs, bacon, and buttered toast that was still warm.He threw that
