Chapter 6

作者: Mimi Wood
Anson's words left a tight ache in Eleanor's chest. Instead of backing off, she let out a low laugh and stepped closer.

"You're right."

She reached up and pinched his chin, her thumb brushing across his cheek, her voice slow and unhurried.

"Anson, you really were made to be someone's lover. You've got a face that drives people wild. Several of the women in there just told me that if I ever get bored of you, they'd love to take you off my hands."

She paused and leaned in close to his ear, her breath hot against his skin.

"One of them offered to trade me a plot of land in Ambermoor for you. Another offered a deal she just closed, worth over $100 million."

Anson calmly turned his head, pulled free of her hand, and spoke casually.

"Really? I guess I'm worth quite a lot, then."

Eleanor's eyes went sharp. She jerked her head up and bit the corner of his mouth, hard enough that Anson winced.

"Aren't you afraid I'll actually give you away? You know how it works in our circle. Lovers get passed around."

She stared at him, emotions he could not read churning in her eyes, and sighed.

"Anson, you're counting on the fact that I love you too much to let you go."

Anson's stomach roiled with alcohol and disgust. As she went on about how much she loved him, all he felt was weariness.

"You love me?" He let out a soft, sarcastic laugh. "Eleanor, your love comes cheap. You can hand it out to Gabriel, to Rory, to anyone you like.

"When you think about it, it's not really fair. I used to be foolish enough to love only you. Maybe I should find out what it's like to play the field too."

Eleanor's face went completely cold, and her gaze turned dark and menacing.

"Are you serious?"

Anson nodded calmly.

Eleanor stared at him for a few seconds, then suddenly let out a cold laugh. The next second, she yanked open the door to the private room and shoved him inside.

Her cold gaze swept over the heiresses in the room, and her tone was careless.

"He's yours for the night. Have fun with him."

With that, she slammed the door shut.

Anson stood frozen for a few seconds before it sank in. Eleanor had actually given him away.

He turned to leave, but an arm slid around his waist.

"Mr. Castellan, what's the rush?"

Anson shook the arm off and stepped back, his voice turning cold.

"I'm not Rory Castellan. I'm Anson Lyndhurst."

The women froze and exchanged glances.

The room fell into an awkward silence for a few seconds before someone let out an uneasy laugh. "Wait, is Eleanor playing some kind of joke on us?"

Anson turned to leave again.

Just then, the door swung open once more.

Another heiress walked in, chattering away. "You'll never guess what I just saw.

"Eleanor's husband came to pick her up himself, and you should have seen how lovey-dovey she was with him. She also said tomorrow is their seventh anniversary and she booked out the whole rooftop restaurant, so she's turning down every invitation."

The way the women looked at Anson changed.

"Pretending to be her husband?" one of them sneered. "That takes some nerve."

"Let's help Eleanor teach this clueless boy toy a lesson."

Anson opened his mouth to explain, but they had already dragged him back.

He fought with everything he had, and they only held him down harder.

Someone gripped his chin and forced a drink down his throat. He choked and coughed as he swallowed, and his throat burned.

The drink had been spiked. As his mind began to blur, he watched the lights on the ceiling spin.

It was a night of chaos.

He could not remember how many of them there were or what he had shouted. All he remembered was the pain, which was everywhere.

When he woke up the next day, it was already dusk outside.

Anson forced himself up. His whole body felt as if it had been hit by a truck.

He splashed water on his face, put on his torn shirt, and pushed the door open.

The nightclub had not opened for business yet for the day, so the hallway was empty.

He took out his phone and turned it on. The first notification was a newly breaking headline from Saltmere News.

[Vandermeer Group Head Celebrates Seventh Anniversary with Husband over Rooftop Dinner as Fireworks Light Up the Harbor All Night]

In the photo, the woman gazed at Rory with tender adoration, exactly the way she had once looked at Anson.

Anson scoffed and swiped the notification away.

The next message was from his lawyer.

[Mr. Lyndhurst, the divorce decree has been issued. You can come pick it up anytime.]

The tension Anson had carried in his shoulders for days finally eased, and he let out a long breath.

After collecting the divorce decree from the law firm, he went back to the slums and packed up his belongings and documents. He looked at the run-down rental, now fenced off and about to be demolished, and felt nothing at all.

All the love and hatred and heartache between them had finally turned to ashes.

That evening, he boarded the first available flight to Westmarch.

As the plane slowly rose into the sky, brilliant fireworks suddenly burst outside the window and lit up the night sky over the harbor.

Anson's face was expressionless as he pulled down the window shade, closed his eyes, and leaned back in his seat.

When he opened them again, it would be the beginning of his new life.

When the plane landed in Saltmere, Anson was holding Eleanor’s urn, his fingers stiff with cold.Imogen and Clementine walked on either side of him, and none of them said a word. The arrivals gate was packed with reporters, and camera flashes went off in a frenzy.Someone shouted, "Mr. Lyndhurst, over here!"Someone else shouted, "Is Ms. Vandermeer really dead?"A few even pushed to the front, trying to reach for the urn.Clementine blocked the cameras, her face livid. "Get lost!"Imogen made a phone call, and security rushed in to clear a path.Anson kept his head down and held the urn even tighter.Marian was waiting for him at the harbor. She had stood there waiting for three days. When she saw Anson get out of the car, she stumbled toward him, took his hand, and burst into tears."Anson, did she say anything before she left?"Anson looked at her. She had so much of Eleanor in her face."She said she had a lot of regrets in this life, but she hoped we'd meet again in an

Late one night in Brightwater, Eleanor sat in her apartment, her computer screen glowing in front of her.The email went through. It was her 367th.Anson had never replied to any of them, but she still wrote to him every day. She told him what she had eaten, who she had seen, that it had rained in Brightwater, and that the maple leaves outside her apartment building had turned red.Her phone suddenly rang.Imogen's voice came through, low and urgent. "The medical station is surrounded, and communications have been down for three days. The last signal came from the mountains near the border. There are at least two hundred armed militants."Eleanor shot to her feet."Send me the coordinates.""I'm already in touch with a private security team," Imogen said. "Clementine is pulling together her own people. We leave in three hours."Eleanor hung up, booked a flight, and packed. She moved so fast that she barely registered what she was doing.Three hours later, three helicopters too

On the day his yearlong fellowship ended, Anson received his certificate of completion and made a decision.Clementine came running over. "Doc, let's celebrate tonight! I already reserved a spot at a great restaurant!"Anson shook his head. "I'm leaving tomorrow."Clementine froze. "Leaving? For where?""I'm joining a medical aid mission in a conflict zone." He tucked the certificate into his bag.Clementine practically jumped. "Doc, are you out of your mind? That's a war zone! Bullets and bombs don't care who you are. What are you going there for?"Anson said nothing.Imogen walked up from behind, clearly having heard the whole exchange. She frowned deeply. "It's too dangerous. I'm against it.""I don't need your permission." Anson looked at her. "This is my choice."Imogen took a deep breath and kept her emotions in check. "The medical conditions there are terrible, and fighting could break out at any moment. Do you know the death rate for aid doctors?""I do.""And you're

Eleanor stood outside Anson's apartment building. The cigarette in her hand had burned down to the filter, singeing her fingertips. She had just gotten off the phone with her mother."Rory has lost his mind," Marian had said with a sigh. "That heiress got bored of him and threw him out. Now he's in the hospital shouting, 'I'm Eleanor Vandermeer's husband,' all day long. What a mess."He did hurt Anson, I know that. But doing that to him, Eleanor..." Marian paused. "Forget it. You'll have to live with what you've done."Then the line went dead.Eleanor crushed the cigarette and lit another.Rory had lost his mind. She thought of him standing in front of her in that white suit, his face so much like Anson's when he sweet-talked her, and the call she had missed on the night of the hurricane.Anson had been in that crumbling building, feverish and bleeding, calling her for help.Rory had answered behind her back, then seduced her even more eagerly and led her into saying all tho

Eleanor really did not leave.Early the next morning, when Anson opened the door, she was standing there with breakfast in her hand."Eggs Benedict and hash browns, just like from that diner you used to love," she said. "I had my kitchen practice it for three months."Anson glanced at her, took the breakfast, and dropped it in the trash right in front of her."Don't bring any more."Eleanor nodded and said nothing. That afternoon, when he got off work, she was waiting outside, ten steps away. When he got into a car, she got into hers. When he arrived at his apartment building, so did she.Clementine was crouched by his apartment door. When she saw this, she sprang to her feet. "Old lady, are you some kind of stalker?"Eleanor ignored her, pulled a bag of groceries from her trunk, and headed straight upstairs. When Anson opened his door, she followed him in, set the groceries down in the kitchen, and started washing vegetables and cutting meat."What are you doing?""Making d

  • Helping Out My Wife’s Boyfriends   Chapter 13

When Anson opened his apartment door and saw Eleanor standing there, his first instinct was to shut it.She threw out a hand to stop it, and the door hit her palm with a dull thud."Anson, I've been looking for you for three months."Her eyes were red, dark circles shadowed them, and her coat was hopelessly wrinkled. The proud, untouchable Eleanor he once knew was gone, and the woman standing at his door was a complete mess.Anson looked at her, his tone flat. "What are you looking for me for? Didn't you get the divorce decree?""I regret it.""That's your problem." He stepped back, ready to close the door. She stayed in the doorway and refused to leave.Early the next morning, Anson opened his door to find breakfast waiting outside. There was hot coffee, a sandwich, and a note.[I was wrong.]He picked it all up and threw it in the trash. On the third day, it was a hearty home-cooked breakfast instead, with eggs, bacon, and buttered toast that was still warm.He threw that
