Chapter eleven: She isn't coming back
Luca’s POV “Serafina is gone,” I grunted, as my mother did not even bother to hide her smirk. My brother sat down beside her, and I clenched my jaw as I heard them chatter about how much better things would be now that Serafina was gone. “Perhaps now you will find a proper mate to produce an heir,” my mother retorted, raising her eyebrows and crossing her arms. “Serafina was my mate, whether you liked her or not,” I growled, looking away and trying my hardest to keep my anger in check. It infuriated me that Matteo Bianchi had taken my mate under his wing. She had nothing to do with him, and I knew he had done this out of pure spite due to our long-standing feuds. “Luca, she is nothing but a useless slut, now she's with your arch enemy. What does that truly say about her?” my brother hissed, jumping up from his seat and glaring at me as if he were ready to go to war with me. “You think you know better, do you?” I was ready to punch his lights out if he dared challenge me. My mother stood up and got in between the pair of us. “Stop this now at once,” she ordered. “You are not worth it anyway,” my brother snapped before sulking off and slamming the door so hard behind him that the wall shuddered and a crack appeared. “Right, now you need to calm down, my son. Serafina was never good enough for you, and you know it,” my mother insisted, and I did not want to hear it any longer. Serafina hadn't deserved all this hate and resentment; it was my fault. I should have treated her better and never allowed anyone to make her feel unworthy. I sank onto the nearest chair, my fists trembling as regret settled. Every moment I failed her, every harsh word, every time I let her doubt herself—those memories haunted me now. Serafina deserved so much better than what I had given her. My mother’s footsteps receded as she left me alone with my thoughts. The house was silent except for the distant echoes of my brother’s anger and the faint creak of the walls, bearing witness to my torment. I clenched my jaw tighter, fighting back the ache that threatened to break me. Deep down, I knew Serafina was gone for good. Matteo’s interference, struggles, and mistakes had all conspired to tear us apart. No matter how much I wanted to believe she might return, part of me understood that she had moved on, that she was free from this life of pain and betrayal I had failed to protect her from. A bitter taste rose in my throat as I stared at the space where she once stood. She isn’t coming back. The words echoed, cold and final, sealing a chapter I desperately wished I could rewrite. But in the quiet darkness of my despair, a flicker of hope remained—perhaps someday I could find a way to make amends, to earn her forgiveness. Until then, I would carry this weight, a constant reminder of what I lost and could never retrieve. “Alpha, you have a visitor. She is waiting in your office for you, " an omega announced, and I looked up at the young girl standing in the doorway. She looked extremely nervous about giving me a message. I frowned and wondered who it was since I was not expecting anyone. “Who is it?” I bellowed more than I had intended to do. “I apologise, Alpha, but I don't know her name,” the omega said with widened eyes that looked like we were about to brim up with tears. I rolled my eyes and dismissed her. I had no time for that nonsense. I got up and went to my study, muttering and cursing under my breath as I walked the maze of corridors. Finally, I reached the door of my study, it was closed, and as I pushed it open, I was surprised to see that by the window was Bianca, my lover, her expression tense and eyes searching as they met mine. “Bianca,” I started, my voice strained with emotion. But before I could say more, I raised a hand to stop her. “What are you doing here? I can’t see you right now.” Her brows furrowed, and she took a hesitant step forward. “Luca, please. You look so tense, and I want to help you. I've missed you so much, baby.” She started to massage my muscles, and I couldn't help but feel myself harden at her touch. She knew exactly what buttons to press with me, but all I saw was Serafina’s face. “No,” I cut her off sharply. “Not now. I just... I can’t. Not yet.” She looked hurt, a flicker of pain crossing her face. “Luca, what’s going on? You’ve been distant. I know my leaving before was painful, but I'm back now, and all you're doing is you’re shutting me out—” I clenched my fists, fighting the overwhelming emotions that threatened to burst free. “It’s not about you,” I said quietly, my voice trembling. I have too much on my mind. I need time to think. Please understand.” Her mouth fell open in disbelief. “It's her, isn't? It's that Serafina? She finally got to you and your damn mate bond.” I stared at her, the weight of her words hitting me like a punch to the chest. My jaw tightened, and for a moment, I was speechless. She wasn’t wrong—Serafina’s memory haunted me, and the bond we once shared still lingered, even if I tried to suppress it. “Bianca,” I finally said, my voice low and strained, “it’s not that simple. I told you—” “No, Luca,” she interrupted, her voice trembling with anger and heartbreak. “You’re stuck on her. You can’t just shut me out because of her. I’m here now. I’ve come back for you, and I deserve your honesty. What did that bitch ever do for you?” I looked away, feeling the familiar surge of guilt. I knew she was right, yet I couldn’t deny that massive part of me clung to Serafina—her face, her touch, the memories we should have shared. The bond we had was a part of me, and it was tearing me apart from the inside out. “Bianca,” I whispered, stepping closer but struggling to find the words. “I care about you. I do. But I’m not in a place where I can give you what you want.” Her eyes shimmered with tears, and she shook her head slowly. “You’re lying to yourself, Luca. You’re trying to pretend she’s not still there, but I see it. I feel it. You’re holding onto her, and it’s unfair to either of us.” “Just leave now.” I roared, my Alpha tone clear and authoritative. Bianca stepped back, her face a mixture of heartbreak and shock. “Fine,” she whispered, voice trembling. “But don’t expect me to wait forever.” The door slammed behind her as she left me alone with my haunting thoughts.Chapter eleven: She isn't coming back Luca’s POV“Serafina is gone,” I grunted, as my mother did not even bother to hide her smirk. The scent of damp earth and ancient magic clung to the air, a constant reminder of the encroaching darkness. My heart, a frantic bird trapped in my chest, finally began to settle as Matteo’s presence filled the small cottage. He wasn’t the one my soul yearned for, the one destiny had supposedly chosen, but in this moment, his quiet strength was a balm to my raw wounds. His eyes, the color of storm-tossed seas, held a depth I hadn't seen before. Not the fleeting interest of a potential mate, but something… solid. Real. It was a stark contrast to the hollow indifference I’d faced from Luca. The thought of him sent a fresh wave of nausea through me. *He* was supposed to be my anchor, my protector. Instead, he’d become another source of pain, a jagged shard embedded in my heart.Nonna Lucia’s hand, warm and comforting, remained on mine. Her presence was a constant, a steady flame in the swirling chaos of my life. She understood. Not just the curse, but the deeper wound – the betrayal of t
Serafina's POV My heart hammered in my chest as the doorway creaked open slowly. For a moment, I could only stare, breath hitching as I took in the figure standing there. Matteo. His tall frame was silhouetted against the dim candlelight, his expression unreadable but intense. He stepped inside cautiously, eyes flickering with concern and something deeper—perhaps guilt, maybe affection? I couldn’t tell. The air between us thickened with unspoken words.Matteo’s gaze settled on me, and I saw a flicker of relief cross his face, quickly replaced by a guarded seriousness. He was here for me, but I sensed he was holding something back.Nonna Lucia gently squeezed my hand, giving me a reassuring look before stepping aside.“Serafina,” Matteo said softly, his voice rough but tender. “I’m sorry I couldn’t be here sooner.”I swallowed hard, fighting the tears that threatened to spill again. “Why… why did you come back?” My voice was barely more than a whisper, trembling with a mixture of conf
Serafina’s POVI opened my eyes to find myself in Nonna Lucia’s cottage, she was sitting by my side holding my hand with concern etched across her ageing face.“Oh, my dear child. I was so worried. What were you thinking?” she fussed as soon as I tried to sit up. “Stay there, you have had a nasty shock.”“Nonna,” I croaked, my voice was barely even a whisper. I wasn’t dead? The memories of the cemetery came rushing back to me, how I had planned to meet the moon goddess early amd end my suffering. My heart sank. I could not bare to be here any longer, my mate hated me and my mother wanted to fob me off to anyone that would give her a higher status. She didn’t care about me, nobody did. Other than Nonna and Matteo.Matteo?I gasped as his face popped up into my mind. It was him. He had saved me. But why?Nonna’s grip tightened on my hand and I could see the worry in her eyes. “You are stronger than you realise, Serafina.”“But, Nonna. I don’t want to feel this anymore, this pain and suf
Serafina's POV My mother's words echoed in my head, letting me know that the wedding to Don Silvano would go ahead tomorrow. I cringed at the creepiness of that old alpha, the way he had tried to flirt with me and hadn't even said a word in my defence when Marcus came to mock me. Even my mother had stood watching in silence. None of them cared for me; that was obvious. But I was glad Matteo showed up and protected me; he had promised not to let anyone harm me again. I was grateful but did not want him to see me as a burden, as Luca had eventually. I could not bear to be seen so unworthy by another soul. I walked through the woods towards the cemetery of my beloved father's grave, the only place I ever felt at peace, away from everyone's disgusted looks. The storm was in full swing and the rain pelting down made me think of the many tears I had already shed. I did not let it stop me from walking through the woods. Looking up at the night sky, the stars twinkled amongst the falling
Luca's POV I sat back in my reclining chair and stared at the wall as my phone buzzed with irritating notifications. A video that had sent my mind into overdrive and my heart racing harder than usual. Marco, my foolish brother and Beta, up to his usual tricks of harassing Serafina, throwing water at her and mocking her. Nothing new. My family had always hated Serafina and her crazy mother, Gianna. I even believed that her mother had manipulated the mate bond to her advantage. I had always thought that my true mate would be Bianca Romano. I had never touched Serafina; I couldn't. It was a promise I had made to myself the day I married her. I ignored her no matter how hard she tried to win me over. It was just easier that way for me. But then, as I looked at my phone screen, I noticed Viola's name pop up. My curiosity got the better of me, so I pressed "answer.""What is it, Viola? I have a pack to run." I managed to say before she started screeching down the phone, causing me to hold
"Where are you taking me, mother?" I shrieked in fright as my mother dragged me through the streets and stopped outside a dingy little bar with dimly lit lights. "You better not disobey me if you know what is good for you," My mother growled, warning me not to do anything stupid. Her grip on me only tightened, and she plastered a fake smile on her make-up-caked face. I could never understand how she could treat her flesh and blood this way. "Stand up straight and be a good girl, Serafina," she hissed in my ears like a poisonous snake. I was forced into the dirty bar, which reeked of stale alcohol and strong cigarettes. The sound of laughter filled the air. "Ah, Don Silvano, I'm so pleased you could make it," my mother chimed as she hugged the ageing old alpha sitting on a high stool by the bar. My eyes widened in horror as I realised what this was. Don Silvano. "It's Good to see you, Gianna. I see you bought your delightful daughter along, too." He licked his lips hungrily as he
Weeks passed, and I heard nothing from DeLuca or my family. I knew they would be furious with me for running away like that, but what could I do? I tried to rebuild my life away from the chains that had bound me to that life. I volunteered in a remote village, offering my hands and heart to little orphans and older people. I cherished their smiles and gratitude for my time; they were like a light to my darkness. But, of course, came the whispers of the other villagers; they followed me like shadows. "The Luna who was never claimed." Some would shout at me as I passed by on my way to the orphanage. Others would refer to me as the cursed one and the deaf one. No matter how much light I tried to bring into their lives, the darkness of my past clung to me like leeches. I could not shake it off, no matter what. "Serafina, why do they call you the cursed one?" A little boy, Finlay, wanted to know as I passed around plates of food and cups of water for the orphaned children. I forced a smi
My stomach rumbled as I made my way back into the DeLuca household. I could hear that the Delucas were in the living room discussing something, but no matter how hard I strained my ears, I could not make out their words.I quietly crept into the kitchen and prepared a sandwich and cup of milk to quench my hunger and thirst. My wolf was so weak that, for some reason, I believed eating as well as I could to at least help her regain some strength."I want a word with you." Luca suddenly appeared and harshly grabbed my arm, yanking me backward so I could face him. "You know, Serafina, rejecting a fated mate is taboo. Do you think the Alpha Council will not look kindly on such a broken bond?"My heart pounded in my chest as he spoke those words. Did he believe that?"Luca, I... what do you expect me to do? You don't even want to touch me. I wanted this bond more than you wanted. I tried so much, yet you can stand there and blame me for our broken bond." My eyes widened in disbelief as he
