Serafina’s POV
I opened my eyes to find myself in Nonna Lucia’s cottage, she was sitting by my side holding my hand with concern etched across her ageing face.
“Oh, my dear child. I was so worried. What were you thinking?” she fussed as soon as I tried to sit up. “Stay there, you have had a nasty shock.”
“Nonna,” I croaked, my voice was barely even a whisper. I wasn’t dead? The memories of the cemetery came rushing back to me, how I had planned to meet the moon goddess early amd end my suffering. My heart sank. I could not bare to be here any longer, my mate hated me and my mother wanted to fob me off to anyone that would give her a higher status. She didn’t care about me, nobody did. Other than Nonna and Matteo.
Matteo?
I gasped as his face popped up into my mind. It was him. He had saved me. But why?
Nonna’s grip tightened on my hand and I could see the worry in her eyes. “You are stronger than you realise, Serafina.”
“But, Nonna. I don’t want to feel this anymore, this pain and suffering.”
She gazed at me, taking in my sadness. “Serafina, listen to me. You are strong, you can fight through this. There is a light inside of you that is worth fighting for. You must not give into this despair.”
I could already feel the tears threatening to spill from my tired eyes. Nonna Lucia had always been good to me, I know she loved and adored me. She only ever wanted what was best for me. But this, it wasn’t worth it. I was nothing to those who I would have done anything for. And cursed. I was cursed. No wonder I wasn’t wanted or taken seriously.
“Your mate, Luca DeLuca. He has been a fool. He has been selfish and stupid, his choices have affected you deeply. More deeper than he could ever have anticipated.” She shook her head in disappointment. “You must not let his ignorance destroy you, you have power inside you. Believe in it.”
I swallowed hard, trying to process her words, she knew what she was talking about. Nonna was old, and wise. She had years of experience in the healing and knew everything there was to know, I trusted her words but I still felt an empty feeling deep inside me. I had always been bought up to honor tradition and my fated mate. I remembered my papa always telling me as a child that my mate would love and cherish me. Maybe that’s why I stood by Luca for so long because I believed that he could really love me one day, the way that I was supposed to be loved. But how long was I supposed to wait? I couldn’t take the suffering any longer, it was so hard and losing Lunaria as well. Every day she was fading away even more and I couldn’t live without my wolf. I needed her. But, how was I supposed to save her and stop this damn curse when my selfish mate was so cold and unloving towards me.
“Luca never wanted me. And now Lunaria is fading, she is getting weaker, Nonna. How can I be strong?” I wanted to scream and shout or something but Nonna hushed me, rubbing my shoulders and offering me a cup of herbal tea to calm my nerves.
“Matteo bought you here. Serafina. He saved you from losing your life out in the freezing cold. I would have been devastated if I had lost you.” Nonna sighed as she handed me a steaming hot mug. I bit my lip and nodded.
The warmth of the drink seeped into my palms as I gripped the mug tightly. I took a small sip, allowing the scent of chamomile soothe me.
“Matteo.” I whispered. “But, why? Why would he want to help me so much?”
“He cares about you, that much is clear. He was very worried when he bought you here, Serafina. He has to return to his pack for some important business meeting. He knew you would be in safe hands with me.” She replied, a knowing glimmer in her eyes. “He has your back, don’t allow yourself to shut off those who are willing to help you, my dear.”
I frowned and placed the cup down. “But, he’s not my mate, Nonna. He is not the one that I am supposed to be protected by, he is not supposed to matter this much.”
I looked down at my lap and twiddled my fingers, trying to make sense of the chaotic mess in my mind. Why did Matteo keep popping up when I was in danger? I couldn’t answer that one but I knew Nonna was right, I shouldn’t cut off those who wanted to be there for me. “He saved me, twice. But, I feel so lost. I don’t know who to really trust anymore. Why does it have to be so hard for me?”
“Serafina, strength doesn’t always come from being brave, it acknowledgement of knowing your vulnerabilities and understanding.” Nonna wiped a tear from my cheek with her thumb and smiled softly. It reminded me of when I was about nine or ten years old, I had fallen off and grazed my knee. Nonna Lucia had taken me inside and cleaned me up and given me a plaster. I smiled back knowing how she had always had my back.
“Thank you, Nonna. I would be lost without you.”
“Serafina, you’re awake.” My heart fluttered at the sound of that voice. I looked up instantly to see him standing in the doorway.
Matteo.
Serafina's POV My heart hammered in my chest as the doorway creaked open slowly. For a moment, I could only stare, breath hitching as I took in the figure standing there. Matteo. His tall frame was silhouetted against the dim candlelight, his expression unreadable but intense. He stepped inside cautiously, eyes flickering with concern and something deeper—perhaps guilt, maybe affection? I couldn’t tell. The air between us thickened with unspoken words.Matteo’s gaze settled on me, and I saw a flicker of relief cross his face, quickly replaced by a guarded seriousness. He was here for me, but I sensed he was holding something back.Nonna Lucia gently squeezed my hand, giving me a reassuring look before stepping aside.“Serafina,” Matteo said softly, his voice rough but tender. “I’m sorry I couldn’t be here sooner.”I swallowed hard, fighting the tears that threatened to spill again. “Why… why did you come back?” My voice was barely more than a whisper, trembling with a mixture of conf
Chapter One: The Silent LunaI stood by my chamber's large open windows, staring out at the DeLuca estate. Three long years had passed since my wedding day. The day I married my fated mate. Alpha Luca DeLuca. I had been so excited for that day. Believing that he would claim me and love me for an eternity. The way I believed the mate bond was supposed to be. But, instead, I was met with the total opposite. No marking. No love. No claim. He refused to mark me despite being mated underneath the full Moon and bound together by our vows. He blamed my family for manipulating the mate bond to gain power. My mother constantly scolded me for not falling pregnant yet, each time I held the latest medical in my hands, stating "No Pregnancy Detected." It made me feel even less of a wolf. Luca avoided me like the plague, and when he did acknowledge me, I was only ever met with an ice-cold glare that made me feel sick and worthless. What did I ever do to deserve such a loveless sham of a mar
After tossing and turning all night, I sat at the kitchen table the following day. The rain had soaked me, and I still shivered from the cold.Seeing Luca entangled with his ex had hurt me so badly. How could he treat me this way when the moon goddess had paired us together in the first place? No wonder he did not want to touch me when he had Bianca by his side. She was beautiful, but I was supposed to be the only female he was attracted to and loved—not her, not anyone else. My mother suddenly entered the room, interrupting me from my thoughts. She glared at me with such hatred. Where a mother's love should be, there was nothing but hatred and disappointment in hers. "Hmm, look at you, Serafina. You are a disgrace. Sitting there like a lazy luna, you haven't got anything to do. You should be more concerned with getting pregnant instead of stuffing yourself with more food. Not everyone can get pregnant naturally." My mother hissed at me. You need to make an effort to explore other o
My stomach rumbled as I made my way back into the DeLuca household. I could hear that the Delucas were in the living room discussing something, but no matter how hard I strained my ears, I could not make out their words.I quietly crept into the kitchen and prepared a sandwich and cup of milk to quench my hunger and thirst. My wolf was so weak that, for some reason, I believed eating as well as I could to at least help her regain some strength."I want a word with you." Luca suddenly appeared and harshly grabbed my arm, yanking me backward so I could face him. "You know, Serafina, rejecting a fated mate is taboo. Do you think the Alpha Council will not look kindly on such a broken bond?"My heart pounded in my chest as he spoke those words. Did he believe that?"Luca, I... what do you expect me to do? You don't even want to touch me. I wanted this bond more than you wanted. I tried so much, yet you can stand there and blame me for our broken bond." My eyes widened in disbelief as he
Weeks passed, and I heard nothing from DeLuca or my family. I knew they would be furious with me for running away like that, but what could I do? I tried to rebuild my life away from the chains that had bound me to that life. I volunteered in a remote village, offering my hands and heart to little orphans and older people. I cherished their smiles and gratitude for my time; they were like a light to my darkness. But, of course, came the whispers of the other villagers; they followed me like shadows. "The Luna who was never claimed." Some would shout at me as I passed by on my way to the orphanage. Others would refer to me as the cursed one and the deaf one. No matter how much light I tried to bring into their lives, the darkness of my past clung to me like leeches. I could not shake it off, no matter what. "Where are you taking me, mother?" I shrieked in fright as my mother dragged me through the streets and stopped outside a dingy little bar with dimly lit lights. "You better not disobey me if you know what is good for you," My mother growled, warning me not to do anything stupid. Her grip on me only tightened, and she plastered a fake smile on her make-up-caked face. I could never understand how she could treat her flesh and blood this way. "Stand up straight and be a good girl, Serafina," she hissed in my ears like a poisonous snake. I was forced into the dirty bar, which reeked of stale alcohol and strong cigarettes. The sound of laughter filled the air. "Ah, Don Silvano, I'm so pleased you could make it," my mother chimed as she hugged the ageing old alpha sitting on a high stool by the bar. My eyes widened in horror as I realised what this was. Don Silvano. "It's Good to see you, Gianna. I see you bought your delightful daughter along, too." He licked his lips hungrily as he
Luca's POV I sat back in my reclining chair and stared at the wall as my phone buzzed with irritating notifications. A video that had sent my mind into overdrive and my heart racing harder than usual. Marco, my foolish brother and Beta, up to his usual tricks of harassing Serafina, throwing water at her and mocking her. Nothing new. My family had always hated Serafina and her crazy mother, Gianna. I even believed that her mother had manipulated the mate bond to her advantage. I had always thought that my true mate would be Bianca Romano. I had never touched Serafina; I couldn't. It was a promise I had made to myself the day I married her. I ignored her no matter how hard she tried to win me over. It was just easier that way for me. But then, as I looked at my phone screen, I noticed Viola's name pop up. My curiosity got the better of me, so I pressed "answer.""What is it, Viola? I have a pack to run." I managed to say before she started screeching down the phone, causing me to hold
Serafina's POV My mother's words echoed in my head, letting me know that the wedding to Don Silvano would go ahead tomorrow. I cringed at the creepiness of that old alpha, the way he had tried to flirt with me and hadn't even said a word in my defence when Marcus came to mock me. Even my mother had stood watching in silence. None of them cared for me; that was obvious. But I was glad Matteo showed up and protected me; he had promised not to let anyone harm me again. I was grateful but did not want him to see me as a burden, as Luca had eventually. I could not bear to be seen so unworthy by another soul. I walked through the woods towards the cemetery of my beloved father's grave, the only place I ever felt at peace, away from everyone's disgusted looks. The storm was in full swing and the rain pelting down made me think of the many tears I had already shed. I did not let it stop me from walking through the woods.
