CASPIAN

I stood at the vending machine, feeding the money in as calmly as I could.

A few beeps later, I took the bitter cup of coffee and took a blissful sip, two fingers pressed against my temple.

I hadn’t really slept. A half-hour nap on the stiff visitor’s chair didn’t count. The nurses had come and gone through the night, checking vitals and adjusting IVs.

I’d barely looked up each time, eyes always trained on her sleeping form just to make sure.

Now, with the sun up and the hospital no longer quiet, I left my post and walked into her room again. Aria was awake, propped up against the pillows, her face pale but alert with her hair a tangled mess she hadn't yet remembered to care about.

Even then, I thought she looked maddeningly beautiful. Some things didn’t change.

She turned her head when she saw me and reached for the water on her tray. Her hand was unsteady.

I took the cup from her and helped her sip. She nodded in thanks, then leaned back again with a small winc

ARIA If tension had a smell, it would’ve been thick as cigar smoke in that boardroom. Rowan’s tantrum had barely settled when one of the older men shot up from his seat like the chair had bit him. He had silver hair, deep jowls, and a forehead vein already pulsing with indignation. “If we’re quite finished with this circus,” he snapped, “some of us have real work to do.” I tilted my head, my fingers laced lightly in front of me. “And you are?” The man blinked. “What?” “Your name,” I repeated, voice sweet but not soft. “Forgive me, we’ve never met. I like to know the names of the people I’ll be working with.” His lips curled like I’d asked to borrow his pension. Then, he slammed a fist against the polished table. “This boardroom is not a playground, Miss Stanton!” I didn’t even flinch. I was too far gone to stop. They would either bend for me, or they would break. “That’s a relief,” I said, nodding solemnly. “First that you know who I am, and second because I didn’t come

ARIA I should have slapped him. I could imagine what Rowan’s reaction would be if I walked up to him, pulled my arm back, and slapped that smirk off his stupid face. I didn't. Instead, I smiled. It was a wide, teeth-baring smile, the kind that instinctively made people check if you were holding knife behind your back. “I see you’re still compensating with bad jokes Rowan,” I said as I walked deeper into the room. “and here I thought this was a board meeting, not amateur hour.” Rowan’s smirk was a rotten stain on his face, and it dimmed slightly. I could feel my palms starting to sweat as I turned to look at the other people across the polished table. There were six people. Five men and a woman in a cream suit with sapphires in the lapel. All of them were silent and watching. Behind me, Caspian’s fingers brushed my spine, trailing to my lower back. I felt his touch like ice rolling along my skin. He leaned in, his lips brushing my cheek like a promise. “I'm l

CASPIAN I'd fucked up. I knew I had messed up. “Aria…” “No, I'm going to walk over to the car, and I'm going to wait there to give us some privacy. Please don't lie to me, Caspian.” Aria’s voice was flatter than a pancake. And true to her words, she turned and walked out. I should have told her what I suspected. Immediately grandma showed me those pictures, I should have told her. But I hadn't been certain, and before bringing up something that terrible, I'd wanted to be. Moving stiffly behind her, I opened the door and slipped out. Markus had arrived, but he was standing by his car door. Beside Aria was Xander. She shot a look at me, rolled her eyes and turned back to Xander who shook his head at her, and walked away. Aria opened the car door, climbed inside and stared out at me. “What the fuck did you do this time? She's freaking pissed.” Xander muttered. “Fucking Ivan couldn't keep his lips sealed shut. I'll tell you all about it later. I gotta go now before she explodes

  • Her Billionaire Ex-husband's Regret    186. "WHAT IS HE TALKING ABOUT, CASPIAN?"

ARIAIt took less than a few minutes to leave Talia’s house and get into the car. Caspian’s driving was reckless, which was very unlike him. And I did nothing to stop him. No, I clutched the seat belt and snapped it around my body, then readied myself for the anger that would spew out of me when we got to Ivan. That bastard had done more than his own fair share of evil deeds against me. My fingers were almost shaking with anticipation. That was until Caspian pulled into an empty parking lot, parked the car and asked me to stay inside the car. “I won't be doing that.” Opening the car door, I stepped out of the car before he could stop me. “Aria, get back here.” I heard his voice behind me, but I was already heading toward the large metal door of the building in front of us. “That's exactly what I won't be doing. I've looked forward to getting this man, you won't be keeping me in the car while I miss the action.” “That's exactly why you need to stay in the car. We're not sure if

ARIAI had seen Talia burst into tears more times than I could count. Matter of fact, she had the ability to cry on command, the tears spilling out just at the perfect moment she wanted them to.I'd never seen her with her shoulder shaking, her head bent, and looking so fucking scared. That, more than anything was what calmed the fire inside me. “What the hell are you talking about, Talia. Who beat you?” She kept crying, shaking her head, shrinking away from us into the seat. I shook my head as I watched her, frustrated and irritated. Caspian tapped her shoulder, and I could see the tightly coiled anger in his eyes as he forced her head up with her hair. “Listen to me, Talia. You killed those cats, I don't care if these men kill you, but we need to know why they would ask you to kill those cats, and leave them where you did.” That was exactly my thoughts. I felt no pity for the woman shaking on the couch. Talia’s face was all bruised up like a bad apple. Whoever had gotten to

CASPIAN “Talia.” I could see how I must have reacted on Aria’s face. Her eyes narrowed. Her lips became flat, and she glared at me. “That can't be right. Talia doesn't have the stomach to do a thing like that.” I would have thought so too, just until I saw the video Reed had shared with me. “She does. We're not sure who killed the cat, but she's the one who laid it out like on Reed’s porch.” There were only so many ways to be angry. I had thought I had exhausted my reserves, but just repeating the words to Aria, had the anger rushing back. What sort of human being had the stomach to perform such a horrendous act? Aria’s fingers cupped her stomach and she gulped, then bent and retched. “That's not possible. That can't be possible.” Turning away, she ran into the bathroom and puked out the content of her stomach. Brushing my fingers across her forehead, I held back her hair. When she was done, I cleaned her up, and took her to the bed. But she wouldn't lie still. He
