I flushed, looking like a maid next to Zara who was expertly made up and wearing the new dress Travis had just gifted her.

Everyone was whispering.

“Ugh, how's she even Zara's sister? They look nothing alike!”

“Isn't she the one whom Zara caught whoring around?”

I felt shame crawling up my spine even though I had done nothing wrong. The humiliation seemed never ending with these people.

Falling in love wasn't a crime, but I was certainly being punished for it!

Zara stood on the small stage father had rented for her birthday. Her lips trembled, tears spilling down her cheeks like she was the victim.

"My birthday dress…" she choked out, holding the ripped fabric with delicate hands. "Aria didn’t mean to ruin it, I’m sure. It was probably an accident.”

People turned to look at me. There was disgust in their eyes and I could see they were all judging me.

Travis pushed me forward. “I can't believe you would be so vicious as to destroy your sister's dress.”

ARIACaspian was home. The sight of him sitting on the couch, jacket tossed carelessly over the armrest, nearly undid me. His head snapped up when I shut the door, eyes scanning me like he was bracing for bad news.I didn’t say a word. I crossed the room and threw my arms around him, burying myself in his chest before he could ask.“Aria?” His voice was rough with surprise. His arms came around me instantly, locking me in place. “What’s wrong?”I didn’t answer. I just held him tighter like if I let go, reality would come crashing down on me. My heart was racing, and I felt stupid for shaking when Caspian felt so solid the way he always did. He eased back just enough to tilt my chin up. “Talk to me.”“I just…” My throat was tight. “I needed to see you.”His eyes softened. He didn’t press. Caspian stood, sliding his hand into mine, and led me down the hall without a word. The bedroom felt quieter than the rest of the house, a bubble of calm that wrapped around us the second he shut

ARIA Stevens breathing became ragged, as though he was trying not to break into tears. And that scared me more than anything. A slap in public was one thing, but had Rowan sent someone to Stevens house? Was he even in this moment still in danger? “Stevens,” I said again. “Did he hurt you?” “No.” Stevens murmured, but his voice was so low that I barely heard it. “Then what happened?” I pressed gently, because I knew if I pushed too hard, he’d shut down. I could already feel it. He laughed. “It doesn’t have to be physical to hurt, Aria. You think it’s just fists and guns with him? No. He’s smarter than that. He doesn’t get his hands dirty if he doesn’t have to. He doesn’t… he doesn’t leave bruises if he doesn't want to.” A chill ran up my arms, because that was exactly the truth. Rowan's words could hurt as bad as his fists, and then sometimes, he sent his goons after you and that was even worse. Stevens exhaled shakily. “The night he called me about my daughter’s dance class…

ARIAI’d barely made it halfway through the bottle of water I’d grabbed on my way out of the office before my hand started shaking. The cap wouldn’t twist back on properly, and I nearly dropped it. I slipped into the driver’s seat and slammed the door shut, locking it before I’d even caught my breath. Dominique’s voice was still in my ears.I sat there for a moment with my forehead pressed against the steering wheel. The car smelled faintly like the vanilla air freshener Lana insisted on keeping in here, but even that was doing nothing to settle me.“Call Stevens,” I muttered to myself. My hand moved on autopilot, pulling my phone from my bag and tapping his name before I could second-guess myself. When he answered, I didn't wait for him to tell me he couldn't talk to me again, I just needed to know what had really happened. “Stevens, wait. What’s going on? I just need to know if something happened?”I could hear him breathing heavily, like he was pacing. “Aria, I have a wife. I h

CHAPTER 236ARIA“Stevens, just hear me out first. I won't risk them, I just need your help.”“No” I could hear the anger bleeding through his words and they were directed at me. “No, Aria you listen to me this time.”The desperation in his tone made me stop cold.“You don’t understand who you’re dealing with,” he whispered. “You’re new to the company. You don’t know him like I do. He doesn’t… he doesn’t play fair. He’ll hurt them. I’ve seen him do it before.”What right did Stevens have to tell me that I didn't know Rowan like he did? I'd lived with that man for years. If anyone knew the sort of monster Rowan was, it was me. I swallowed hard, my grip on the phone tightening until it hurt. “Stevens, he’s not going to touch you. I can make sure of that.”“Stop, Aria, you can't make sure of a damned thing because you won't even see him coming.” The words were panicked. “I can’t do this. Delete my number. Please. Don’t call again.”He ended the call. For the next few minutes, not a mus

ARIA “What are you doing here?” Zara snapped, jumping off Rowan’s lap. She looked from me to Rowan, then back at me with a barely concealed look of hate. “Me? How about you ask Rowan? Weren't you cozied up so comfortably with him just now?” “Why would I ask him? You're the one who interrupted us!” I narrowed my eyes. Zara sounded genuinely confused with my appearance which was quite confusing. I assumed she knew I worked here now. And second, Rowan had broken off their engagement, and the last thing I expected was to find them making out. I didn’t let myself dwell on it. Not now. Because if she didn't know, then it meant Rowan had staged this. A petty little show to make me jealous when I stepped into the room to find him and my step-sister, maybe to remind me who controlled the pieces on this board. I didn’t even glance at her again. She wasn’t my problem. She was Rowan’s and he could deal with her. “Rowan? Mind telling me why Stevens was fired? He was per

ARIAWork wasn’t supposed to feel like walking into enemy territory, but the second I stepped into Rowan’s building, that’s exactly what it was.Vienne was waiting in the lobby, crisp as ever. She ran her eyes over my attire and her lips thinned. A disapproving look passed over her face as she snapped her laptop shut and lifted it into her hands. “Good morning, Miss Stanton. Congratulations. You’ve been appointed head of the Creative Department.”I stopped, lifting a brow because that made no sense at all. “Come again?”She started walking to the elevator. “You’ll be overseeing all creative projects effective immediately.”It landed like a slap. My mind tripped over the words until the obvious question punched its way out. “What about Stevens? Isn't he supposed to be the creative lead?” “He was, unfortunately he isn't. Mr. Stevens was terminated yesterday.”The bottom dropped out of me, and it felt as though the air was punched right out of my lungs. “Terminated? As in fired?”What
