Laila sat on the edge of Malaya's bed, watching her chest rise and fall in the steady rhythm of sleep. Her daughter looked so peaceful, lashes resting against her cheeks, one hand curled around her favorite stuffed animal. In moments like this, it was easy to forget how cruel the world could be. Laila's throat tightened.

It wasn't fair.

It wasn't fair that Malaya would one day have to carry the weight of choices she hadn't made. That she might suffer because of the parents she'd been born to—because of the man who had walked away.

Laila leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to her daughter's forehead. "I've got you," she whispered, more promise than reassurance.

She stood quietly and slipped out of the room, easing the door shut behind her.

"What did you do?"

Laila jumped, her heart nearly leaping out of her chest as she spun around to find Mariah leaning against the hallway wall.

"What the hell!" Laila snapped, clutching her chest. "You scared me!"

Mariah held up her phone, eyes wide.

  • Her Christmas Wish   The Weight of What He Lost

“Ahem.”Jordan looked up sharply, his heart giving an uncomfortable thud as if some part of him had already known this moment was coming the second his parents had stepped foot into the hotel. His chest tightened, instinctively bracing for impact. Both of his parents stood in the doorway, worry etched deep into their faces—his mother’s lips pressed thin with resolve, the same expression she wore whenever she was about to step in and take control of a situation that had spiraled beyond reason, and his father’s brow furrowed in quiet concern, the lines deeper than Jordan remembered. They looked older than they had just hours ago, weighed down not by time, but by the mess he’d dragged into their lives.“Jake tells us you’re engaged,” Judy said quietly. Her voice was tight, carefully measured, controlled in that way that told Jordan she was already halfway into problem‑solving mode and holding herself back from unleashing the full force of her thoughts.Jordan let out a slow breath and gl

  • Her Christmas Wish   Damage Control

“How could she do this?” Jordan snarled, pacing the length of the hotel room like a caged animal. His footsteps were heavy, restless, as if the carpet itself had offended him. “How could she stand there—out there—in front of everyone and say those things about me?”“Jordan, you need to calm down,” Jake said, leaning against the dresser, arms crossed but eyes sharp with concern. “You’re turning red, man. This isn’t helping.”“She called me a racist,” Jordan shot back, dragging a hand through his hair hard enough to make it stand on end. “She said she thought I was just like our grandfather. She wouldn’t even talk to me. She wouldn’t listen.”Jake dragged his hands down his face slowly, like he was trying to keep himself from snapping. “Can you really blame her?”Jordan stopped short, spinning on him. “Can I blame her? Whose side are you on?”“I’m on her side, Sam,” Jake said without hesitation, his voice steady but unyielding. “She’s the one you left. You had a choice, and you chose wr

  • Her Christmas Wish   When Truth Spilled Into the Night

Laila leaned back in her chair, watching another group of friends climb onto the stage and launch into an enthusiastic, slightly off‑key rendition of Holly Jolly Christmas. Their laughter rang out over the music, voices overlapping and clashing, and she found herself laughing too, clapping along with the crowd. Warmth spread through her chest—not from the alcohol, but from the feeling of belonging. For the first time that night, she felt light. Almost carefree."Looks like we started a trend tonight," she said, smiling widely as she watched the group bow dramatically to cheers and whistles."We always were trendsetters," Kyle replied, striking an exaggerated pose that made her laugh harder. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and squeezed her close, his voice softening. "I'm really glad you're here, Lai. I wish you'd move back permanently… but I get it. You've got a life in Charleston now.""I do," she said softly, her smile gentling. "It's home now." She paused, emotion flickering

  • Her Christmas Wish   Her Voice, His Regret

Jordan hesitated just inside the entrance of The High Note, nerves buzzing beneath his skin as the familiar wash of music, laughter, and overlapping voices hit him all at once. The bass thrummed through the floor in a steady pulse that vibrated up his legs, a rhythm he could feel in his bones. The scent of citrus, alcohol, and expensive perfume hung thick in the air, mixing with something warmer—comfort, nostalgia, memory. Warm amber lights washed over the room, casting everything in a flattering haze that softened edges and blurred reality just enough to make it feel dreamlike, almost unreal. For a man who could walk into a stadium filled with tens of thousands without breaking a sweat—who could handle press conferences, roaring crowds, and game‑winning moments—this felt infinitely harder. This wasn’t about a game plan or a play call. There were no rehearsed answers, no controlled outcomes, no playbook to fall back on. This was about the woman he’d loved. And the life he’d walked awa

  • Her Christmas Wish   The High Note

The High Note was a smooth jazz and R&B club tucked just off Main Street, the kind of place that felt intimate no matter how crowded it became. From the outside, it didn’t look like much—just another brick building with a glowing sign—, but the moment you stepped inside, it wrapped itself around you. Low amber lights glowed against dark wood walls, casting everything in a warm, flattering haze, while candles flickered on small round tables like tiny promises of a good night. The steady hum of conversation blended seamlessly with the slow groove of music floating from the stage, saxophones and smooth vocals weaving through laughter, clinking glasses, and the occasional burst of applause. It was the kind of place where time slowed just enough for you to forget everything waiting for you outside its doors—bills, responsibilities, expectations—all left behind for a few precious hours. It had always been a favorite for the group, not just because of the drinks or the effortlessly cool vibe
