LOGINChapter 44
Bella’s POV
The glass shattered before it even registered in my mind that I had thrown it. It hit the far wall with a sharp, violent crack, wine splattering like blood across the pale surface.
I stood frozen for a second, my chest rising and falling too fast, my fingers trembling, and then came the anger. Not the quiet, simmering kind I wore like perfume in public, but the raw, ugly rage I kept buried.
“It didn’t work…” I whispered, my voice thin, disbelieving as my lips curled.
“It didn’t work,” I muttered out loud again as I turned abruptly, pacing the room like a caged predator, heels clicking sharply against the marble floor.
Everything had been perfect, yes, everything: the accusation, the pressure, and the timing. Livia was supposed to crumble, she was supposed to fall and Zach… I hissed as my jaw tightened.
“Zach was supposed to walk away,” I said aloud, but he didn’t. Instead, he did the exact opposite of what I thought he would do.
My hands clenched into fists. “He’s watching her,” I muttered, my voice dropping into something dark. “Even when there’s no reason, no obligation, no right as he’s still watching her.”
My chest burned. “And the worst part?” I let out a bitter laugh, shaking my head. “He pushed the luncheon forward.”That piece of information had felt like a slap to my face. Zach is manipulating the council, accelerating the multi-pack gathering, and forcing everyone into one place. “For what?” I asked no one in particular as I laced up.
My eyes darkened. “For her.” I nodded to myself as the realization made my stomach twist violently.
“He couldn’t wait,” I spat. “Couldn’t stay away.”
I stopped pacing after a while, staring at my reflection in the mirror across the room. Perfect, untouched, composed but my eyes… my eyes betrayed everything.
“He wants to see her that badly?” I whispered, almost incredulous. “After everything?”
My reflection didn’t answer as it only stared back at me, cracked beneath the surface.
A sharp knock came at the door, but I didn’t respond. My mind had already shifted to something worse.
To something that had been eating at me since the morning.
Perry, my expression hardened instantly as I walked toward the desk, pulling open the drawer I had carefully returned to its exact position hours ago.
Inside, nothing looked out of place because I had made sure of it. My fingers brushed against the memory of what I had seen. Documents, notes, names, and investigations.
My lips parted slightly. “He’s digging,” I whispered, not casually, not passively.
Relentlessly, my nails dug into my palm. “And he didn’t tell me.”
The betrayal stung more than I expected. Slowly, my anger twisted into something deeper, something sharper.
“I’m your Luna,” I said to the empty room, my voice low and dangerous. “You don’t move behind my back.”
My breathing grew uneven. “And you don’t…” I swallowed, my voice tightening, “you don’t try to save her.”
The word her came out like poison, Livia.
Livia is always at the center, always the one people were willing to protect. My vision blurred for a second, not with tears but with fury. “He’s trying to prove she’s innocent,” I whispered, disbelief laced with venom.
“He’s actually trying to clear her name.” A hollow laugh escaped me.
“Perry, my dear, loyal Perry,” I murmured, my head tilted slightly. “Or so I thought.”
I reached for my phone, my fingers hovered over his contact for only a second before I pressed it.
The call rang once, twice, three times before he finally picked up “Bella.” His voice was calm, and that alone irritated me.
“Where are you?” I asked sharply and there was a pause. “In my study,” he replied coldly.
“Good,” I said immediately, already turning toward the door. “Don’t move,” I ordered as I ended the call before he could respond.
The walk to his study felt longer than usual, or maybe it was the storm inside me, as I didn’t knock before opening the door.
The door slammed open with force, and Perry looked up from his desk, his expression unreadable but his eyes flickered briefly with something I couldn’t quite place. Annoyance?
Guilt?“Bella,” he said evenly, setting his pen down. “To what do I owe…”
“Don’t,” I cut in sharply, stepping inside and shutting the door behind me. “Don’t pretend,” I said immediately.
His brows drew together slightly. “I’m not in the mood for games, Perry,” I added, and silence stretched between us at that moment. It was heavy, tense and then “What’s wrong?” he asked.
The question snapped something in me. “What’s wrong?” I repeated, my voice rising.
“What’s wrong is that my own mate is sneaking around behind my back!” His expression hardened slightly.
“I’m not sneaking,” he replied calmly.
“Really?” I laughed bitterly, stepping closer to his desk. “Because going through files, conducting investigations, and not telling your me, what exactly would you call that?” I asked.
His jaw tightened. “It’s not your concern.” The words hit me like a slap, and I went still.
“Not my concern?” I repeated, my voice dropping dangerously low.
Perry didn’t flinch. “This is Alpha business,” he said, and my eyes widened slightly.
“Alpha business,” I echoed, my lips curling.
“So that’s it? You follow Zach’s orders blindly now?” I asked, surprised at his response.
“I follow my Alpha,” he said firmly. “Like I always have.”
My laugh was sharp and humorless. “Even if it means protecting another woman over your own mate?” I asked.
That got a reaction and flicker in his eyes.
“You are twisting things,” he said.
“No,” I snapped, slamming my hand on his desk. “I’m seeing things clearly,” I said as he leaned in closer.
“Tell me, Perry, what exactly are you investigating?” I asked.
He was silent. “Say it.” I ordered.
He held her gaze. “The incident at the manor.”
Her lips curved slowly.“And?” I asked
“And what?” he snapped. My voice dropped to a whisper. “Are you trying to prove Livia didn’t steal?” I asked.
The tension in the room spiked instantly as Perry didn’t answer but he didn’t need to.
My smile vanished. “You are,” I breathed, my voice shaking now, not with weakness, but with restrained fury. “You actually are.”
“It’s my duty to fi
nd the truth,” he said.“The truth?” I snapped. “Or her innocence?”
“They are the same if she didn’t do it,” he replied.Zach’s POVThe moment felt unreal, like the ground beneath my feet had cracked open, but instead of falling, I was forced to stand there still, composed, and watched by everyone. My jaw tightened as my eyes locked onto Bella. What the hell is she doing here?My chest rose and fell slowly, but inside, my wolf was raging, clawing, snarling, demanding blood. Not just Bella’s but Perry’s too.Perry… you traitorous fool. I dragged my gaze away for a second, only to meet Hayden’s face, and that was worse because Hayden looked surprised.“Zach,” Hayden said, stepping forward slightly, his brows furrowed in mock confusion. “Care to explain what’s going on here?” he asked with a smirk.I did not even care to answer him immediately, as I could not say a word because in that split second, I understood everything. This was planned, every single second of it, and the worst part? Bella was smiling, not openly, not foolishly, but there it was, subtle, dangerous, victorious, and a smile that only I c
Zach’s POVThe moment my eyes landed on her, everything else blurred into nothing.Livia stood across the grand hall like a memory that refused to die, elegant, composed, breathtaking in a way that felt almost cruel. The soft lights above only made her glow more, her presence commanding attention without even trying. My chest tightened just like that night… The first time I had seen her again after years apart, how my world had tilted, how my control had slipped for a brief, dangerous second. Back then, I had mistaken her silence for weakness, and I almost scoffed now.My jaw clenched as another memory forced its way in. The slap, the sharp, stinging crack that had echoed louder than any words she could have said. I could still feel it, the heat on my cheek, the shock that had rippled through my entire body, the way my pride had shattered in front of her. And now? Now she looked at me like I was nothing. No… worse like I was something filthy. My gaze dropped slightly, just in time t
Bella’s POVThere was a moment, just a brief, flickering moment, when I considered letting it go, but I know Zach had made his decision. A cold and final like I meant nothing to him.The more I replayed his words in my head, the more something dark and dangerous curled inside my chest. If I couldn’t change his mind, then I would make sure he choked on that decision. “Are you certain?” I asked, my voice low as I stood before one of my informants. The man nodded quickly, almost too eagerly. “Yes, Luna. Perry hasn’t stepped out all day. Guards say he’s still inside,” the informant said as a slow smile crept onto my lips.“Perfect,” I muttered excitedly.Perry’s mansion stood tall and quiet, the kind of silence that pretended nothing ever went wrong inside its walls. I didn’t bother announcing myself, as I have never done so.The doors opened anyway because they always did anytime I came.He was in the living room when I walked in half-dressed, clearly in the middle of preparing to leave.
Bella’s POVFor a moment, everything went silent like the world had been swallowed whole.I stood there, my fingers trembling at my sides, my chest rising and falling too fast, too unevenly as I blinked once. It seems as if my vision had betrayed me. As if this humiliation wasn’t real, but in the actual sense, it was.I was still shocked from the words or should I say the command of Zach?Is he really being serious about me not being good with him?Zach was walking away from me even as I stood watching him leave. “Zach,” I called, my voice came out low at first, strained, like it was dragged from somewhere deep inside my chest. He didn’t stop even as I called out to him and this made something inside me snap.“Zach!” My scream tore through the palace courtyard, sharp and wild, echoing against the walls like a warning siren as heads turned, guards stiffened, and servants froze mid-step, but Zach?He still didn’t turn or even feel concerned about my emotions. My hands curled into fists,
Bella’s POV“Zach!” I called as I noticed he was about to start the car and drive off. My voice tore through the room like a blade, sharp and unrestrained. The walls seemed to echo my fury, carrying it farther than I intended, but I didn’t care as I wanted him to hear it and I wanted him to feel it.“How dare you?!” I snapped, my hands trembling at my sides. “How dare you think you can show up to that event without me?!” I thundered but he didn’t respond immediately.I watched as he finally stepped down from the car and began walking towards me. He was slow, steady, and dangerous. My chest tightened as I watched the audacity, the sheer audacity of him. Did he think people wouldn’t talk? Did he think they wouldn’t notice his absence of a mate, his pregnant mate? Or worse, did he simply not care? That thought hit harder than anything else and my heart twisted painfully. Livia, the name burned through my mind like poison.“This is what she is doing…” I muttered under my breath, my lips
Bella’s POVI stood by the tall window in my room, my fingers gripping the curtain so tightly the fabric wrinkled in my hold. My reflection stared back at me from the glass, perfect, composed, but my eyes betrayed me as they burned.“I won’t lose,” I whispered to myself, my voice low and sharp. “Not to her, not to Livia.”But it seems the more I said it, the less convincing it sounded. Then the thought of Perry flashed in, he had been avoiding me for a while now, and that alone was enough to make my blood boil.I had called him again and again, but no answer. I have sent messages, tried to arrange meetings, but in all he ignored and declined them all. Each rejection felt like a slap to my face as I wondered what could have changed. I paced my room, my heels clicking aggressively against the marble floor as I replayed our last conversation.“He’s hiding something,” I muttered, my lips curling. “You think you are clever, Perry?” I asked, staring into space.I grabbed my phone again, di
