12. The names on the guest list

The day for the engagement party finally closed in leaving the Voss manor in a state of quiet frenzy. Staff moved to and fro with shiny trays, florists adjusted the towering arrangements of lilies and roses and the faint sound of classical music which collided with Sasha's crisp commands floated across the hall.

Diane arrived just an hour before noon, her presence sharp and efficient. Her gaze cut through the the details that Sasha has fussed over for weeks but her face remained unreadable. She walked to the living room, with Greta following quietly behind her.

"We'll make sure nothing goes wrong" she said, as though issuing an order rather than reassurance.

Upon hearing about her arrival, Sasha rushed downstairs, her face shrouded with a sweet smile. She had already sent Ma'am Camille to prepare a cup of tea that would be served.

"Mom, you're here" she said with a curtsy before sitting opposite the older woman.

    20. Peace and PandemoniumThe bright white ceiling of St. Rita's Medicals was the first thing that came into her view the moment she opened her eyes. A low groan slipped her lips the moment she squirmed slightly against the bed, startling the person who was by her side. Damien. Damien finally let out the breath he didn't know he has been holding all night the moment he saw her move. He quickly stood from the bedside stool, his eyes looking her all over. The worry was too obvious that Dahlia couldn't miss it. Her lips stretched slightly into something warm as she looked at his frantic actions. "I'm fine" she said, though her voice was raspy. Damien nodded. Without word, he reached for the jug of water on the bedside table and poured Dahlia a glass. He handed it to her. "Here" his deep voice came. Dahlia nodded and accepted it. It was quite refreshing. "How's it now? Your throat?" he asked, his brows raised a little."Good" Dahlia humored him. She looked around, as if looking for s

    19. A fiancée's furyThe Voss manor was now quiet, the tension of the night's events still clinging to the air. Lucien stepped into the mansion. It was quiet as well, save for the low hum of air conditioner hanging at all corners. He settled into one of the sofas and took out a stick of cigarette. He lighted it and took a long drag. A smooth exhale. "Good evening ma'am Voss" the voices of the staff at the entrance crept into his ears. "Where's your master?" Diane asked. "He's in the living room" one of the staff answered, tone low and polite. Diane eyed the staff and left for the living room. Lucien had already smoked half of the stick when Diane walked in. However, he showed no reaction. Diane fumed silently but made sure to keep her cool. She sat opposite him. "Lucien" she called as soon as she sat down. Lucien spared her a glance. "Mom" he murmured through the smoke. "Now even I don't get a proper greeting from you?" Diane complained, an attempt to get a reaction from her s

    18. Marked and Dismissed. The party came to an abrupt end due to the pool incident and guests began to leave one after another. Headlights flashed against each other at the parking lot, like water in a fountain. Cameras kept flashing, trying to get hold of the remaining tea of the night. In a dark corner, a man stood with one of the guests, asking questions about the pool incident. However, before the person could answer, Sam and Jace as if programmed, appeared, silencing both the person asking and the one replying.Jace and Sam looked at themselves without a word their gazes cold like icicles on an ice rink. Just a slight dip of their heads, and they went their separate ways. At the patio, Lucien stood, with a cigarette in hand. He lighted it and took a long puff from it, exhaling as though it was the most effortless thing to do in this world. Footsteps approached from behind. He turned. It was Jace. The latter bowed before closing in. "Boss, everyone has been silenced" Jace said

    17. A kiss unintended. At the patio where Diane was with her circle of ladies, Greta rushed in, panting. Her actions disrupted the loud gossip, earning harsh scowls from them. Diane looked at her, her eyes turning cold. "What's wrong?" Greta looked at the women, then lowered beside Diane and whispered something to her. Diane's eyes shifted to menace but she quickly concealed them. She looked at the ladies with a smile that carried practiced deceit and stood. "Ladies, my attention is needed somewhere" she said and turned to go. "What's that? Shouldn't you tell us? Or are we limited to the patio alone?" One of the ladies asked. Diane's eyes shifted to her, almost glaring. "What are you saying Mrs Shawn?"Mrs Shawn smiled, her eyes shining with astuteness. "We also want to know what has happened. Don't we ladies?" her voice drawled as she looked at the rest of the women. "Of course" one of them said. "Is Mrs Voss hiding something?" Another seconded. And like that, they all reache

    16. Something as black as fear...It was already the fifth minute since Dahlia left her seat and Lucien couldn't ignore the dark loom clawing tightly at his chest. He looked at his wrist watch again. With each tick of the clock hand, his heart hammered loudly almost clouding his sense of hearing. To think she's someone he never had anything for...and now, her absence is making him restless. What a maddening woman!Sasha noticed his silent distress, her face etched with worry. "Is everything alright?" she asked him. Lucien didn't reply immediately and just looked at the seat where Dahlia had left from. "I hope so" he said absentmindedly. Sasha reached for his back and patted him gently with a cute smile plastered on her lips. "You don't have to be anxious or anything. I'm here, aren't I?"Lucien looked at her just for few seconds. "Mm" was the flat reply. "Excuse me" he muttered and walked out. Sasha looked at his retreating back which was as icy as ever, a sudden sadness creeping i

    15. Before the lights went out...The two figures on the floor moved in accordance to the graceful swelling of the orchestra, causing the hearts of different people to burn with several emotions. Liam was a handsome man and Dahlia wasn't lacking in beauty either. They were the pair that made people envious that evening. Scanning the surroundings with his eyes, Liam caught sight of Lucien's cold and hard face, which looked like it could bore holes into their skins. He smirked and then lowered his eyes to meet Dahlia's own which were aloof and unreadable. "I'm still waiting for my 'thanks'" he said with a small smile. Dahlia arched a brow. "Thanks? For what?" Liam gave her quick spin and held her back in his arms with an ease he carried alone. "Your ex-husband is squirming in his sit. He's been rather".Dahlia let out a low chuckle which didn't quite reach her eyes. "Don't you think so highly of yourself Mr Liam?" she questioned. "Of course I do think highly of myself and I'm sure y
