Chapter 1

Just as I opened my eyes, I saw a flash of cold light in front of me. Someone was roughly pulling open my collar.

"Alec, just bear it a little longer. Stephen's illness came on so suddenly. I need you to give one more bit of your heart's blood."

The icy blade sank into my chest, but I could no longer feel the pain.

Because just moments ago, I had already died.

Princess Jasmine Tolbot gripped the knife and twisted it back and forth inside my chest.

But instead of writhing in agony and begging through tears like I used to, I turned my head slightly to avoid her movement. Then I stared right at her, expressionless.

My chest ached as if being twisted by a blade, yet I could no longer feel it at all.

Princess Jasmine's hand paused on the knife. She seemed almost reluctant. She reached out and covered my eyes so she wouldn't lock eyes with me.

Just then, a guard's anxious voice came from the doorway.

"Princess Jasmine, Master Stephen can't wait much longer. You need to hurry."

I knew that voice well. It belonged to Stephen Tucker's personal guard.

Every time Stephen fell ill, it was this guard who urged Princess Jasmine to carve out my heart's blood.

Princess Jasmine hesitated no longer. Her hands worked quickly, drawing out the last of my heart's blood.

"Alec, just behave and let me take your heart's blood. You should feel blessed that you're able to save Stephen. Once Stephen has recovered, I will compensate you."

Beneath her palm, I slowly closed my eyes and tried my hardest to hold back the bitter tears.

Another day? There would be no other day.

She didn't know it, but my life had already ended today.

When I lay still for a long time, Princess Jasmine put away my heart's blood, tucked the blanket around me, and left without looking back.

I slowly opened my eyes and watched her hazy figure retreat. A soft laugh escaped me.

Then my lips froze, unable to hold their upward curve any longer. My tears finally broke through.

A month ago, her cousin Stephen had returned to the capital after his wife's death.

Because his old heart condition had flared up, he needed compatible heart's blood for his medicine.

Using her authority as a princess, she tested every blood source in the city. In the end, only I matched with Stephen.

We had been married for five years.

At first, she only agreed to marry me because of my father's dying wish. But later, we had grown close and loving.

She would care for me day and night when I had a cold. I personally saw to her meals and clothing, never letting anyone else do it.

But I never thought that for Stephen's sake, she would personally carve out my heart's blood.

Time and again, I begged and pleaded. Time and again, she took it by force without mercy.

Until today, when my life force finally failed. I withered and died.

But she was like a sheet of ice that could never be warmed. She didn't even notice I had stopped breathing.

All she cared about was taking my heart's blood to Stephen.

Because my resentment was too great, I could not enter the cycle of reincarnation. The King of Hell gave me seven days to return to the living world and settle my grudges.

But I never expected that when I opened my eyes again, Princess Jasmine would still try to carve out my heart's blood one more time.

I was already a ghost without pain or feeling. Yet my chest ached as if wind were blowing through a hole in it. I had never been one to cry easily, but cold tears spilled from my eyes again.

I pressed my hand to my chest and thought bitterly, at least in seven more days, I would finally be gone.

Because the price of returning to the living world was disappearing completely.

Three days later was my funeral. Before sealing the coffin, Princess Jasmine gave my appearance one last touch-up.Just then, she suddenly stopped. Her hand trembled as she pinched the sleeve of my burial robe."Alec. It was you. It was you all along!"She suddenly broke down in grief, startling me from where I floated not far away.I craned my neck to see. She was staring intently at the plum blossom embroidery on my sleeve.Because I had loved plum blossoms more than anything in life, I had specially changed into burial clothes embroidered with plum blossoms during those seven days.Princess Jasmine's hand shook as she pulled a handkerchief embroidered with plum blossoms from her bosom. She carefully compared it to the embroidery on my sleeve.Suddenly, she let out a loud laugh. "How stupid I am!""Alec, if your spirit in heaven can see this, are you laughing at my foolishness? After all those years together day and night, I never recognized you!"Looking at that handkerchi

The next day, Princess Jasmine held a funeral service for me and had one clergyman pray for my soul. She sat alone in my room, going through my belongings. But no matter how many times she searched, she could not find a single trace of herself among my things."The paintings that were here! Who touched them? Where are they?!"Princess Jasmine flew into a rage at the servants.I knew what she was talking about. Those paintings I had made of her. I had already burned them to ashes. The servants in the courtyard knelt on the ground, trembling all over, but none of them could give her an answer. Because the recent memories of me in their minds had already disappeared.Princess Jasmine's fury exploded. She grabbed one of the maids by the throat and tried to kill her on the spot."Since you couldn't take care of the consort, you can go to the underworld and apologize to him!"The maid's face went completely pale. She struggled with all her might."Princess, I'm so sorry. Please spa

At this moment, watching Princess Jasmine's tear-streaked face full of regret, all I felt was endless cold mockery. What good was revenge? I could never come back.Besides, if anyone truly deserved vengeance, she should be the first one she killed. That night, Princess Jasmine held my body in her arms, laughing and crying by turns. She was a complete mess.Even when Stephen came looking for her, she didn't spare him a single glance.Snubbed past his breaking point, Stephen finally fell to his knees. His eyes, brimming with tears, stared straight at Princess Jasmine."Jasmine, don't you want me anymore?"Princess Jasmine didn't gently soothe him like she used to. Instead, she answered coldly, "That's right. I can't give you a title anymore."Stephen's eyes widened in shock. He looked at Princess Jasmine in disbelief."Jasmine…"He clutched his chest and drifted into Princess Jasmine's arms like a withered leaf falling from a branch. Finally, something stirred in Princess Jasm

Princess Jasmine went mad. Ignoring all dignity, she crawled on the ground to my body and let out a heart-wrenching scream. "Alec!"I floated in the air, expressionless, calmly watching her lose her mind.I wanted to turn and leave, but I couldn't move more than three steps away from her.In the hazy mist, two ghostly messengers slowly appeared.I called out excitedly, "Take me away."But the two ghostly messengers looked me up and down, then shook their heads. "The time has not yet come."Before I could say another word, their figures vanished again into the night.Dejected, I floated in the air, forced to watch Princess Jasmine's belated remorse. She refused to believe that I had died for no reason. So she summoned the most famous coroner in the capital to examine my body.I watched her performance coldly.Who should know the cause of my death better than her? She was the one who killed me with her own hands.Sure enough, after carefully examining the body, the coroner fro

Three days later, the manor was suddenly decked out in festive decorations, bustling with activity.Because I was busy sorting through my belongings and burning them one by one, I had no idea what was happening in the manor. After a little asking around, I learned that Princess Jasmine was preparing to formally take Stephen as her secondary husband. As her primary husband, this matter should have been approved by me. Yet, I was the very last person in the entire manor to find out.I burned the last portrait I had painted of Princess Jasmine and let out a bitter laugh. It didn't matter. I was nothing more than a ghost. What right did I have to meddle in the affairs of the living?Just then, Princess Jasmine stormed into my bedroom. Catching the lingering smell of smoke in the room, she frowned slightly and paused."What are you burning?"I lowered my head slightly and avoided her gaze. "Nothing. Just some useless things."Princess Jasmine didn't think twice about it. She frowne

Princess Jasmine forced the bowl against my lips. The look in her eyes was so fierce it was as if she wanted to tear me to pieces.I held back the sting in my eyes and turned my head away from the scalding hot porridge. But she wouldn't take no for an answer. With one hand, she gripped my jaw and poured the porridge straight into my mouth. The moment it went down, my insides began to cramp with unbearable pain.I instinctively clutched my stomach, but Princess Jasmine thought I was putting on an act.Without room for argument, she grabbed the small of my back and forced me to finish the entire bowl.I endured the twisting pain in my abdomen and swallowed, mouthful by painful mouthful.Only then did Princess Jasmine pull her hand back with satisfaction. She picked up another bowl, blew it cool, and brought it to Stephen's lips. "Here, Stephen, you eat some too. Let me feed you."Stephen's face flushed as he took the spoon from Princess Jasmine's hand into his mouth. His eyes gla
