Elena’s POV

I walked away fast, with my heels clicking against the ground in sharp, angry rhythms. I don’t know why I felt so angry, but I didn’t slow down . Don’t you fucking cry I tell my self over and over again as I charged ahead.

“Elena!”

Jonathan’s voice came from behind me, but I didn’t stop walking , neither did I turn around. I just kept walking. I would rather be anywhere but near him. He could talk to lady sparkles for all I care.

“Elena, I said wait, can you please fucking stop waking for a moment!”

His hand caught my arm, turning me around to face him.

I yanked my arm free. “Don’t.”

“What the hell is going on?” he demanded. “Why are you acting like this?”

“You lied to me,” I said, my voice shaking with anger I couldn’t control. “You said you were working late. You didn’t mention you were going on a dinner date with Lisa.”

“It wasn’t a date…”

“I don’t care what it was,” I snapped. “You lied. You grabbed your phone like you were hiding something, and then you snuck out without telling me where you were going.”

“I don’t need to tell you everywhere I go,” he said, his tone hardening. “It’s my private life, Elena. I’m not required to report to you.”

“I’m your Personal Manager…”

“And being my Personal Manager doesn’t mean you get to know every person I meet with or every meal I have,” he cut in. “There are boundaries. Professional boundaries. Or have you forgotten that?”

The words hit like a slap.

I stood there, staring at him, feeling something crack inside my chest.

He was right. Of course he was right.

I had no claim to his personal life. No right to be angry about who he had dinner with or what he did in his free time. I was his employee. His Personal Manager. Nothing more.

But knowing he was right didn’t stop my heart from breaking.

“You’re right,” I said quietly. “My apologies. It won’t happen again.”

I turned and walked away before he could see the tears burning in my eyes.

Later that evening, Jonathan stood by the car, waiting for me like he always did.

“Ready to go?” he asked when I approached.

“I’m not coming with you,” I said, not meeting his eyes.

He frowned. “What?”

“I have plans. My private life. You know how it is.”

I could feel him staring at me, but I didn’t give him the satisfaction of looking back.

“Elena…”

“Have a good evening, Mr. Hart.”

I turned and walked in the opposite direction, pulling out my phone to call a cab.

Behind me, I heard him say my name one more time, but I didn’t stop. I wasn’t interested in anything he had to say.

The bar I found was small and dimly lit, I don't know when last I went to a place like this. I really didn’t like it but I needed something strong.

I slid onto a barstool and ordered a tequila. Then another. Then another. Until I lost count and I was thoroughly drunk.

The bartender raised an eyebrow after the fourth shot, but I just pushed my glass forward.

“Rough day?” he asked.

“You could say that,” I muttered.

I didn’t know what I was doing here. I didn't know why I was so upset, why Jonathan’s words had cut so deep, why the image of him smiling at Lisa made me want to throw something.

This was supposed to be a game. A plan to get revenge on Daniel by getting close to his father.

But somewhere along the way, it had stopped feeling like a game.

Somewhere along the way, I’d started to care. And that was the most terrifying realization of all.

“Mind if I sit here?”

I looked up to find a guy standing next to me, he was obviously in his mid-thirties, and he was decent-looking, he also had a very easy smile.

“Free country,” I said, turning back to my drink.

He sat down anyway, ordering a beer and turning to face me.

“Bad breakup?” he asked.

I laughed, the sound bitter. “Something like that.”

“Want to talk about it?”

I shouldn’t. I knew I shouldn’t. But the tequila was making everything blurry, and I was tired of keeping everything bottled up.

“It wasn’t supposed to be like this,” I said, staring into my empty glass. “It was supposed to be simple. A game. Get close to him, make him trust me, and then… I don’t know. Win.”

“Win what?”

“I don’t even know anymore,” I said, laughing again. “But then he started being nice. Saving me during a thunderstorm. Taking care of me when I was in pain. Looking at me like I mattered.”

The guy leaned closer, his expression sympathetic but his eyes calculating. “Sounds like you’re in over your head.”

“That’s an understatement.”

“You know what you need?” he said, his hand landing on my knee. “A distraction. Somewhere quiet where you can forget about all this for a while.”

I looked at him, my vision slightly unfocused, and part of me knew this was a bad idea.

But the other part…the part that was hurt and angry and desperate to feel something other than this ache in my chest…didn’t care.

  • Her Game; His Obsession    Chapter 25

Elena’s POV“What the hell is wrong with you?” I demanded the moment we were outside, the cool night air hitting my flushed face.Jonathan didn’t answer. He just strode toward the car, his jaw was set, and his entire body was rigid with tension.“Jonathan! I’m talking to you!”“Get in the car, Elena.”“No! Not until you tell me what the hell that was about!”He stopped, turning to face me, and the look in his eyes made my breath catch. I’d never seen him like this…wild, barely controlled, like he was holding himself back from doing something reckless.“Get in the car,” he repeated, his voice dangerously low.“Why did you drag me out of there?”“Because I couldn’t watch it anymore.”“Couldn’t watch what?”“You!” He shouted, running a hand through his hair. “I couldn’t watch him touching you, looking at you like that, like he had no right…”He stopped himself, closing his eyes and taking a deep breath.“Get in the car,” he said again, quieter this time. “Please.”I don’t know why him sa

  • Her Game; His Obsession    Chapter 24

Jonathan’s POVI sat in the back of the car, checking my watch for the third time in as many minutes.Seven-fifteen. We were supposed to leave at seven. My driver, Michael, glanced at me in the rearview mirror. “Should I call up to Miss Rivers’ suite, sir?”“Give her another minute,” I said, though my patience was wearing thin.I drummed my fingers against my knee, trying to ignore the nervousness coiling in my stomach. It was ridiculous. I have attended hundreds of these events over the years. This was just another gala, like every other night.Except it wasn’t. Because Elena would be there. And I had no idea what to expect. The hotel doors opened, and my breath caught in my throat.Elena stepped out, and every single thought I had vanished. The emerald green silk draped over her body like it had been designed specifically for her, which in a way, it had. The fitted bodice hugged her curves, accentuating every line, every dip in her perfect body, while the skirt flowed elegantly wit

  • Her Game; His Obsession    Chapter 23

Elena’s POVThe project was wrapping up faster than expected, and I couldn’t decide if that was a relief or a tragedy. In another week, maybe two, we’d be done. The construction was ahead of schedule, the investors were happy, and everything was falling into place exactly as it should.I should have been relieved. Excited, even. This meant we could finally leave and go to Singapore, get back to DC, and I could put some real distance between myself and whatever this complicated mess with Jonathan had become. But instead, I just felt tired. Tired of the drama. Tired of Lisa’s barely concealed hostility and the way she looked at me like I was an inconvenient obstacle, fuck hwr by the way. And I was even more tired of pretending I didn’t care that Jonathan had gone from hovering over me constantly to treating me like just another employee whose name he barely remembered.I told myself it was fine. That this was what I wanted, what I’d demanded. But it didn’t feel fine. It felt like I wa

  • Her Game; His Obsession    Chapter 22

Elena’s POVI told myself I’d done the right thing. Setting boundaries with him was the best thing to do. The only thing to do, really. Jonathan and I had gotten too close, and much too tangled up in each other’s lives, and it was clouding everything… including my judgment, and purpose, the reason I’d come to Hart Global in the first place. This was much, much better.I repeated this to myself as I got ready for work the next morning, staring at my reflection in the bathroom mirror. My eyes looked tired, I had large eye bags that even makeup couldn’t quite hide. I’d barely slept, my mind replaying that conversation outside my suite door over and over again.I splashed cold water on my face, trying to wash away the guilt that had been heavy in my chest since that night.Eventually, I almost believed I’d done the right thing.“These calculations are off by at least three percent,” I said, pointing to the spreadsheet on Jonathan’s laptop. My hand was steady, I tried my hardest to keep m

  • Her Game; His Obsession    Chapter 21

Jonathan’s POVThe conference room felt smaller than usual.I sat at the head of the table, I couldn’t help but feel bored while the three lead investors sat across from me with matching looks of disapproval. Lisa stood near the window, her arms crossed, her face was blank. On the screen mounted to the wall, the video played on loop. Me, dragging a man from a car. Me, hitting him over and over while he lay defenseless on the ground. It looked bad. But did I give a shit? Nope.“Mr. Hart,” Mr. Chen said, his tone cold and formal. “Can you explain this?”“I was protecting my employee,” I said calmly. “That man kidnapped her. He locked her in his car and assaulted her when she tried to leave. What you’re seeing is me ensuring her safety.”“By beating him nearly unconscious?” another investor, Mrs. Tan, asked sharply. “This is not how professionals handle conflicts, Mr. Hart. This is vigilante justice.”“Would you have preferred I called the police and waited while he drove off with her?”

  • Her Game; His Obsession    Chapter 20

Jonathan’s POVMy eyes swept across the dark street, searching desperately for any sign of her, when I noticed a car. Pulling away from the club about fifty meters down the road, moving faster than it should have been in a residential area. And through the back window, for just a split second, I saw Elena. Her head was lolling against the seat, and she looked unconscious. My blood turned to ice.The driver looked back, and our eyes locked. His expression shifted immediately…from cocky confidence to something like panic…and he slammed on the accelerator.I was already running back to my car.I threw myself into the driver’s seat, started the engine, and tore out after him, my tires screeching against the pavement. The car ahead weaved through the traffic, running a red light, cutting off other vehicles. Horns blared and people shouted but I didn't care. All I could see was Elena’s unconscious in that backseat.I grabbed my phone with one hand, keeping the other on the wheel, and scrol
