TALIA'S POV

“Get in the car,” Maxton said, his tone steady as he swung the door open for me.

Honestly, my head was spinning. My limbs felt like jelly and the world was kind of sideways. Whatever I drank definitely wasn’t just alcohol. I have been tipsy before but this? This felt like my brain was melting in slow motion.

“Yeah okay,” I muttered, stumbling into the passenger seat like a half-dead zombie. Maxton shut the door gently, like I might break if he slammed it, then walked around to the driver’s side and got in.

“You good?” he asked, glancing at me with concern and calm he always had, like he was trying not to freak me out.

I nodded, forcing a weak smile even though I felt like throwing up and crying at the same time. “Yeah just peachy,” I said, voice dry as hell.

My phone buzzed in my lap. I blinked a few times, trying to focus through the haze as I picked it up. The screen looked like it was underwater, but I still tried to read the message. Probably someone asking where I was

  • Her Hockey Stepbrother, Her Worst Enemy, Her Beloved   Chapter 17

TALIA'S POVI hated how my feet moved before my brain did.. one steps, two step.. past the counter, past the neon cow glowing on the wall, until I was standing by Zeke's table like some girl in a bad indie movie who knows she should leave but doesn't. I could feel Chris's gaze from behind me. This was going to be harder than I thought.Meanwhile Zeke didn't smile, he simply nodded to the seat across from him, a gesture that I should sit. I didn't."This better be important," I said quietly."It is, and I'll tell you if you could just sit. No strings attached, I assure you,” he said.I sat across him, folding my arms. "Make it fast, Deej is going to kill me if she doesn't get her Oreo drizzle."A small smile found its way to his face, but it died off just as it came. "You look tired.""That's what you wanted to say?" I asked as I tilted my head a bit, but Zeke shook his head."That's just an observation." He said.I looked down on the table and saw the melting scoop of chocolate he had

TALIA’S POV“Attention students! Just a reminder—tomorrow is Picture Day! Come dressed to impress. Yearbook staff will be stationed in the gym from 9:00 a.m. sharp. That’s all!”The speaker clicked off with a crackle, and within three seconds, the hallway was buzzing.Girls were already comparing gloss shades. Guys were adjusting imaginary ties in their reflections. Someone whispered something about wearing a crown and making it their “royal debut.”“Not them giving runway vibes for a yearbook and I.D. cards,” I said, rolling my eyes as I yanked open my locker, ignoring the sudden fashion frenzy forming around me.Picture Day.One day in a year where everyone pretended to be their best self before going back to chaos the next. And as if I didn’t have enough going on already, it was finally here.I took out my literature textbook from my locker, trying to ignore the slight headache in my head. My mind was still messed up from the drama that had happened in the cafeteria two days ago. S

  • Her Hockey Stepbrother, Her Worst Enemy, Her Beloved   Chapter 15

TALIA’S POVThe second my name was called out in that cafeteria, I didn’t wait for more drama.I left. I Didn’t look at Zeke. Didn’t check if Maxton was still standing there. Didn’t give Bambi the satisfaction of seeing me crack.I just grabbed my tray, dumped it on the nearest table, and walked out of there like I hadn’t nearly combusted in front of the entire school. That was close.Way too close. If I had stayed one more second there, I probably would’ve punched Zeke or said something I’d never recover from. I didn’t even want to think about what would’ve happened if Maxton had stepped forward or if Bambi had thrown another drink. But now I was marching toward the principal’s office, hoodie clutched around me like armor, trying to figure out what the hell I’d done to earn a clipboard shoutout.I haven't skipped any classes lately. No detentions. No fights. Not unless cafeteria drama counts as a crime now.Maybe Bambi filed some nonsense complaint. Or worse… maybe someone saw the k

TALIA’S POVChris’s voice came at me like a car alarm — loud and impossible to ignore.I blinked.Deej’s mouth was wide open from the passenger seat, like she had just witnessed me walk out naked. Chris leaned out the window, staring at the hoodie like it was a ticking time bomb.I tugged the sleeves down over my fingers and gave them a tight-lipped smile.“Good morning to you too.”“Oh no! No! No! You don’t get to do this,” Deej snapped, opening the door and twisting in her seat like a disappointed mom. “Get in this car right now and explain yourself before I lose my mind.”I sighed, slid into the backseat, and shut the door behind me.Chris turned all the way around to look at me.“That is Maxton Carter’s hoodie. You said you hated him last night.”“I do hate him!” I defended, voice breaking under pressure. “It’s just a hoodie!”“Yeah, and I’m just a pineapple,” Deej muttered. “Talia. It’s his hoodie.”Chris narrowed his eyes. “Did something happen? Did you two…?”I blinked.Deej’s

  • Her Hockey Stepbrother, Her Worst Enemy, Her Beloved   Chapter 13

TALIA’S POVIt was my mom.Not a ghost. Not Bambi. Not a karma fairy sent to slap me for kissing Maxton Carter. My actual mother, sitting on the edge of my bed like this was a casual Sunday brunch and not the aftermath of a complete emotional meltdown for her daughter.I froze mid-step. “…Now?”“Now,” she said sweetly. Too sweetly. The dangerous kind of sweet. The kind of sweet that meant someone was about to die and it might be me.“I—” My brain short-circuited. “Is this about last night? Because if it’s about—”“It won’t take long,” she cut in, her voice wrapped in silk and warning.I nodded slowly, heart thumping like I had drugs in my pocket and I had just been stopped by the cops. I sat across from her like a student about to get graded for breathing wrong. She clasped her hands in her lap. “I just wanted to have a little mother-daughter moment.”My brain: Abort mission. This is a trap. She tilted her head. “How are you coping here?”“I’m… coping,” I lied.“And with Maxton?”My i

  • Her Hockey Stepbrother, Her Worst Enemy, Her Beloved   Chapter 12

TALIA’S POVI woke up in what I can only describe as a crime scene. My head was hurting like there was a party going on inside, my mouth tasted like expired energy drink and bad choices, and worst of all—I wasn’t wearing what I left the house in.I blinked, sat up slowly, then paused. I stared at my reflection in the mirror across the room and gasped.“WHAT THE HELL—”I was in his hoodie. Him, Maxton Carter’s. It was black, oversized, smelled like pinewood and arrogance. I looked around like maybe someone snuck into my room and was playing a sick prank. How did I get into his clothes? I wanted to believe that maybe Deej had followed me home and had changed me.“Deej?” I called, already panicking. “CHRIS?!”But no one answered. There was no Deej or Chris.Just me, my aching head, and the hoodie of the boy I swore on seven different cursed objects I’d never let touch me.“What… happened last night?”I threw the blanket off like it personally offended me, and that’s when I saw it on my n
