Alessia stared at the light red velvet in her trembling hands.

It was a long, body hug gown with a slit running almost to the upper thigh. Thin spaghetti straps held the top in place, leaving her shoulders, collarbones, and much of her back exposed.

Alessia’s stomach tightened. How could her mother expect her to wear something like this to a syndicate gathering?

A dress this revealing, surrounded by powerful and dangerous men made her feel less like a guest and more like someone being deliberat

  • Her Mafia Stepbrother’s Obsession    Chapter 59

The summons came early two days later. Rocco had arrived, and he was taking her to the boutique to buy the engagement party dress. Alone. The thought of being alone with him in a private dressing room made a shiver run down her spine. It had been three days since her escape attempt. Despite giving her a new room, her mother had worked her almost to death. Her hands were bruised, and her legs wobbled from weakness.Every part of her small body hurt. Elena had made sure every waking hour since the failed escape was spent working. Alessia had spent the last three days scrubbing marble floors on her knees, carrying heavy laundry crates up and down three flights of stairs, and taking slaps whenever she slowed down. It was punishment. Her mother wanted to break whatever courage Alessia still had before handing her over to the Prieto syndicate. There were dark circles under her eyes, and her lip was cracked. She stared at herself in the mirror, and a sob escaped her.The girl staring back

Alessia froze in terror. “What? You… you told Rocco?”The words barely left her mouth. All the color drained from her face, and her hands became damp against the Persian rug. She remembered Rocco’s fingers around her throat, squeezing until she could barely breathe. The memory made her stomach twist. If he knew she had tried to escape — if he knew she had run from the marriage he had forced on her — she knew he would make her pay for it.“I did.” Bianca straightened. “Madre didn’t punish you enough to my satisfaction, so I thought maybe Rocco would do a better job.”She calmly smoothed her silk blouse and glanced at her nails as though they were far more interesting than the girl sitting on the floor in front of her. There was a small smile on her lips.Alessia stared at her. To Bianca, this was a game. She had found out about Marta helping Alessia and had used it against her. Then she had made sure Aunt Rosa’s attempt to get her out of the estate failed too.“Why?” Alessia asked, he

Alessia woke up on a soft Persian rug. At first, it didn’t feel real. Her neck ached badly from the force of the guard’s strike. She lay perfectly still for several moments, trying to push through the fog clouding her mind. The fabric beneath her face was soft and thick, nothing like the hard, freezing floorboards of her little room in the servants’ quarters. Every pulse sent a dull ache from the base of her skull down her spine, right where the guard’s palm had struck her outside the estate perimeter. Her eyes fluttered open. Her vision was white at first, but it slowly cleared. She was in a room. Not her room in the servants’ quarters. This one was bigger and fully furnished. The high vaulted ceiling was framed with elegant crown molding, and soft afternoon light came through the tall, curtained windows. A massive canopy bed covered in rich fabrics stood on one side of the room, while polished mahogany furniture lined the walls. Everything was spotless, luxurious, and completely

The cold bit through Alessia’s thin dress as she made her way toward the end of the perimeter. She kept close to the shadows, careful not to step into the reach of the floodlights. The damp ground was uneven beneath her bare feet, sending shivers through her body with every step. The night wind slipped through the thin cotton of her gown and chilled her skin. She pressed herself against the towering stone wall and kept her head down. The wide beams from the watchtowers swept across the grounds, forcing her to wait before moving again. She watched the lights, then hurried forward whenever the darkness covered her path. Every rustle in the woods made her glance over her shoulder. She kept going. The farther she got from the estate, the lighter she felt. After a few more minutes, she spotted a car near the old service road.A woman stood beside it, pacing along the driver’s side. “Aunt Rosa?”Rosa looked up. The worry on her face disappeared, replaced by a bright smile as she hurried

Alessia stood still, staring at Sophia.Off-limits?Why had the last floor suddenly become off-limits? Could it have something to do with the man who had been brought in earlier? She took a slow breath and rubbed her arms as a cold draft moved through the stone hallway. It wasn’t her business. She didn’t want to know what the De Rossis were hiding upstairs. None of their dark, bloody politics mattered to her anymore. Not when tonight was the night she would finally leave this nightmare behind. She turned and went back to the kitchen to finish her work. She moved through her chores as usual, cleaning the long dining hallway until the floors gleamed and helping the other kitchen staff prepare dinner. But she couldn’t settle.Every creak of the floorboards made her look up. Every heavy door that slammed somewhere in the mansion made her shoulders jump.By seven, dinner was ready, and she was told to serve. Alessia carried the silver platters into the grand dining room with her head down

The next day, Alessia did everything she could to stay out of Don Antonio’s way. She kept her distance from her mother and Bianca too, avoiding anything that might draw their attention to her.She couldn’t afford an argument or an unexpected chore to interfere with her plans. Tonight, she was leaving the estate.Still, as she went about her work, her thoughts kept returning to Cassian. She didn’t understand why her body reacted so strangely whenever he was near.He frightened her more than anyone in the house, yet she couldn’t forget his hands pulling her against him, his lips brushing against her ear, or the look in his pale silver eyes. She hated that those memories made her feel something she couldn’t explain. It was late afternoon when the sky turned a dull, bruised grey.Alessia was almost finished trimming the thick rosebushes in the side garden when the heavy iron gates screeched open.Three black SUVs rolled across the gravel driveway and stopped near the main entrance.Alessi
