Morning came, but nothing about it felt better. Alessia had barely slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, she found herself back in that narrow corridor, pinned between the stone wall and Cassian’s towering body. She could still remember how calmly he had stood there while she trembled, he hadn’t needed to touch her, and that was what frightened her most.

By breakfast, the entire household already had her working. Elena had sent her to the east gallery with a rag, a feather duster, and a list of things that needed cleaning.

Alessia had been dusting the enormous gold frames lining the walls for nearly an hour when she reached the portrait nearest the entrance to the west wing. She stopped. The west wing. Cassian’s part of the house. She knew because everyone knew.

Servants weren’t supposed to enter without permission. Even the guards rarely went beyond the heavy doors separating it from the rest of the estate. Alessia quickly looked away. She stretched onto her toes and ran the cloth over the upper edge of the frame.

Her hands were still trembling, and she hated that they were. She hated that Cassian had managed to get inside her head after only two encounters. A faint sound came from behind her and Alessia lowered the cloth.

“Alessia.”

Her stomach dropped. She turned around Elena was walking toward her. There was something unpleasant in her expression.

Alessia immediately lowered her eyes. “Madre.”

“What are you doing here?” Elena asked, eyeing her in suspicion.

“Cleaning,” she said.

“Don’t lie to me,” Elena sneered.

Alessia looked at the frame. “I was told to dust the portraits.”

Elena glanced at it, then at the doors behind Alessia, her expression darkened instantly. “You’ve been standing here for how long?”

“I don’t know,” Alessia whispered.

Elena’s eyes narrowed. “Near his wing?”

Alessia understood immediately. “No.”

The answer came too quickly, making Elena’s face harden in rage. Before Alessia could explain, Elena slapped her hard, the crack echoed through the gallery. Alessia staggered sideways. Her shoulder struck the marble wall, and for a second she couldn’t hear anything except the ringing in her ear.

Her cheek burned in raw pain. “Madre...”

Elena grabbed her hair before she could even finish, Alessia cried out as her head was yanked backward.

“Do you think I’m blind?” Elena hissed.

“No,” she whimpered.

“Then don’t stand there and make a fool of me!” Elena yelled.

“I wasn’t doing anything…” Alessia tried to explain.

Elena pulled harder. “You’re trying to get his attention.”

Alessia’s eyes widened in shock. “What? No!”

Another slap sent her head sideways, her eyes spinner from the impact. Pain spread across her cheek as Elena’s diamond ring had cut her skin. Alessia lifted a hand instinctively and felt something wet beneath her fingers. Blood.

“You’re always looking for a way to make trouble,” Elena said.

“I wasn’t looking for Cassian!” Alessia cried out.

That made Elena even angrier. She shoved Alessia away, she stumbled and nearly fell.

“Don’t say his name as if you’re familiar with him,” Elena hissed.

“I’m not,” Alessia said.

“Then stay away from him,” Elena warned.

Alessia nodded quickly. “Yes.. I’ll stay away.”

Elena stepped closer. “You know what happens to girls who become ambitious in this family?”

Alessia didn’t answer. She couldn’t. The pain spreading through her body made it difficult to respond.

“They get used,” the words were quiet now. Almost conversational. That frightened Alessia more than the shouting.

Elena looked her over with open disgust. “Look at you. You can’t even stand properly without looking frightened. And you think Cassian would want you?”

Alessia lowered her head. “I never said that.”

“You don’t have to,” Elena grabbed her chin and forced her face upward. “Your sister understands how this family works. Bianca knows how to behave around powerful men. She knows what she wants.”

Alessia’s throat tightened. “Bianca isn’t like me.”

“No. She isn’t,” Elena released her. “That’s why she has a future.”

Elena’s eyes hardened. “And you have nothing.”

The words landed harder than the slap, Alessia looked down and Elena shoved her. She fell onto her hands and knees, pain shot through her palms.

“Get up,” Elena snapped.

Alessia struggled upright but Elena’s shoe struck her side. Air left Alessia’s lungs in a broken gasp. She folded over herself, one arm immediately wrapping around her ribs.

Elena looked down at her in disgust. “Do you understand me now?”

Alessia couldn’t answer as Elena nudged her with the toe of her shoe. “I asked you a question.”

“Yes,” Alessia whispered.

“Say it properly,” Elena snapped.

Alessia swallowed against the pain. “I understand.”

“You stay away from the west wing,” Elena said.

“Yes,” Alessia whispered.

“You don’t wander around when Cassian is nearby.”

“Yes.”

“You don’t look for him.”

Alessia’s eyes stung with hot tears. “I won’t.”

Elena stared at her for another moment, then she bent slightly. “If I find out you’re trying to attract his attention, I’ll have you put in the cellar.”

Alessia went still. Elena knew exactly what frightened her.

“The cold won’t kill you quickly,” she said. “You’ll have plenty of time to regret whatever foolish idea put you there.”

Alessia’s lips trembled. “Please, Madre.”

Elena straightened and smoothened her gown. “Clean the floor.”

She walked away and Alessia remained where she was. Her cheek throbbed. Her ribs hurt every time she breathed, she stared at the polished marble beneath her. A small drop of blood had landed beside her hand. Then another. She wiped it away with the corner of her sleeve as she heard Elena’s heels disappear down the corridor.

Only then did Alessia allow herself to breathe properly. She pushed herself upright, her knees were shaking as reached for the cloth. Her fingers wouldn’t stop trembling, so she clenched them into fists until they hurt. She had learnt something a long time ago. Crying never made Elena kinder, it only gave her another reason to keep going.

So Alessia swallowed the tears and started cleaning. She didn’t notice the figure above her.

Alessia blinked rapidly at his words. He wanted a thank you? She knew he had saved her more than once, but he had also tormented her in his own way.Her mind raced as she tried to make sense of the absurd demand, her arms still pinned firmly above her head. He spoke as though he were some heroic savior who had stepped in because he cared, yet he held her against his sofa with the same ruthless strength as the men who wanted to hurt her. Every interaction with Cassian felt like a double edged sword. He protected her from Rocco's brutality, only to replace it with his own dark, suffocating kind of control.Like she always did when she was scared or helpless, she bit her lower lip, her teeth catching the flesh in a way that made the gesture look almost seductive. She hadn't meant to do it. It was an unconscious habit, something she did whenever the panic in her chest became too difficult to swallow. Her small, sharp teeth pressed into the delicate skin of her bottom lip, right where R

Rocco’s jaw clenched hard. “I just said—” he started, but Cassian cut him off before he could dig deeper.“Don’t make me repeat myself… Prieto,” Cassian didn’t even bother to look at him. He turned back to his desk, flicking ash from his cigarette like Rocco was already gone. The room’s silence stretched colder and uncomfortable, thick with tension and almost suffocating. Cassian’s back stayed mostly turned, calm and unbothered, too busy watching smoke twist toward the ceiling to care about the furious man glaring black holes into him.Rocco’s fists clenched so tight his knuckles went white. Still, he managed a forced, polite nod. “Alright then… have a good day,” he said, every word scraping over his teeth. He turned to Alessia, ready to drag her out, but Cassian’s voice stopped him cold.“I asked you to leave, Prieto,” Cassian said, his voice cold as steel. “Not her.”Rocco froze, his grip bruising Alessia’s arm. His face twisted. “She’s my fiancée, De Rossi.” He spat the words like

Alessia’s almost cried out as Rocco let go of her shoulders and clamped his fingers around her wrist, dragging her behind the guard. Every step felt like trudging through quicksand, something heavy and invisible pulling her deeper, all while her arm burned where his nails dug into her skin. Her lip was still bleeding, she tasted the metallic tang and felt her hair, wild and sticky, clinging to her damp, swollen face. She stared at the cold marble floor, bare feet trembling, too scared to look up. Mess up even once, she thought, and Rocco would make good on those threats right here in this corridor. They stepped into the elevator and rode it all the way up. Why was Cassian here? How did he even know where she was? The silence inside was suffocating. The mirrored doors kept sending her battered reflection back at her — no escape. Just a bruised, broken girl standing between two dangerous men who owned everything, her hope included. The chill from the glass walls bit at her skin, bu

Alessia froze. She wasn’t sure she’d really heard him right. “W... what?”The words felt heavy in the air, thick and cold, pressing her down with shame so raw her brain didn’t want to process it. Her hands twitched against the fabric of her gown. Her breath caught, vision swimming with tears she refused to let fall.“You heard me, mi belleza.” Rocco’s grin widened as he licked his lower lip.His eyes drank her in possesively, landing on her trembling hands, her fear-stricken face. He clearly enjoyed it — watching her panic, knowing she was trapped here with him, far from the rest of the world.“No.” The word was barely audible, a tiny, desperate whisper, but it felt loud in the silent room. “No. I won’t do that.”All amusement vanished from Rocco’s face. He stood up so fast the chair barely had time to scrape. Before she could bolt, he crossed the room in three long strides and caught her at the waist, yanking her flush against him.The air whooshed out of her too fast. His fingers

The drive to the boutique dragged on for two hours. Alessia sat pressed up against the car door, desperate for as much space as possible from Rocco sitting beside her. He hadn’t said a word since she got in — not one — but his eyes never left her. She could feel him watching every anxious swallow, every twitch in her hands. Even the sound of his slow, deliberate puffs on a cigar seemed loud in the silence. Honestly, she would’ve preferred shouting. This quiet, smothering tension was worse than any threat he could make.Every mile away from the De Rossi estate felt like she was walking toward her own destruction. Rocco leaned back, legs crossed, mouth set in a hard line, just waiting. Alessia’s skin crawled he was biding his time until no one else was around. When they finally reached the boutique, Alessia barely had time to take in the building — a huge place of glass and dark marble, tucked behind security gates and as intimidating as any fortress. It belonged to someone mysteriou

The summons came early two days later. Rocco had arrived, and he was taking her to the boutique to buy the engagement party dress. Alone. The thought of being alone with him in a private dressing room made a shiver run down her spine. It had been three days since her escape attempt. Despite giving her a new room, her mother had worked her almost to death. Her hands were bruised, and her legs wobbled from weakness.Every part of her small body hurt. Elena had made sure every waking hour since the failed escape was spent working. Alessia had spent the last three days scrubbing marble floors on her knees, carrying heavy laundry crates up and down three flights of stairs, and taking slaps whenever she slowed down. It was punishment. Her mother wanted to break whatever courage Alessia still had before handing her over to the Prieto syndicate. There were dark circles under her eyes, and her lip was cracked. She stared at herself in the mirror, and a sob escaped her.The girl staring back
