The East Wing was quiet at night. Alessia sat on the edge of her narrow bed with her knees drawn toward her chest, staring at the wooden door, the thin blanket around her shoulders did little against the creeping cold. A guard’s boots passed outside — once, twice, then silence.

She hadn’t left her room since dinner. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw those silver eyes at the end of the table. Cassian hadn’t looked at her like a man looking at a woman, he had looked at her as though deciding what she was worth.

She had spent her entire life learning how to stay unnoticed. Antonio liked obedience, Elena liked submission and Bianca liked having someone weaker to torment. Cassian seemed to like none of those — he simply commanded fear without effort.

A floorboard creaked outside, making her head snap toward the door, then someone knocked.

“Alessia?”

She recognized the voice. “Marta?”

“Yes.”

Alessia relaxed slightly. Marta was one of the older kitchen maids who occasionally slipped her extra bread. “What is it?”

“The Don’s wife wants the laundry sorted in the utility room,” Marta said through the door. “She said not to make her wait,” Marta said.

Alessia slid from the bed, her feet hitting the freezing floor. “I’m coming.”

She opened the door. Marta stood outside, looking tired. “You look pale. Go,” Marta whispered. I’ll see if I can get you something warm later.”

“Thank you.”

Alessia stepped into the corridor, keeping her face down as she passed two armed guards. The utility room was on the other side of the central hall. As she crossed near the courtyard, she caught sight of someone on the upper balcony.

Cassian stood under the stone arch, leaning against a pillar in a dark grey shirt with a cigarette burning between his fingers. As Alessia passed, he lifted his eyes and found hers immediately.

Her stomach dropped. She looked away at once, walking faster. When she reached the far corridor she looked over her shoulder — he was still there, smoking and watching her. Her fingers tightened around the hem of her dress as she hurried into the shadows.

She finally reached the utility room and began sorting the laundry, but her little moment of peace ended the moment Bianca stepped into the room and cornered her, her eyes filled with intense hatred.

“Bianca… what are you—“

“Shut up! You freak!” Bianca yelled, pushing Alessia shoulders hard.

Alessia staggered backward, her back hitting the wall. She looked up at her sister, confused. “What’s wrong?”

“What’s wrong? Ha!… You were flirting with him right in front of all of us! You were trying to seduce him with this weird eyes of yours!” Bianca laughed.

Alessia was stunned. “What? No! I didn’t even speak to him!”

“Just shut the fuck up, pathetic little whore!” she took slow steps toward Alessia, pointing a finger at her. “Listen carefully, Cassian is mine. If I as much as see you close to even his shadow, I’ll ruin your life.”

Alessia just stared up at her sister, tears began forming in her eyes but she refused to let them fall.

“Do you understand me!” Bianca snapped.

“Yes… I’ll stay away,” she replied, keeping her gaze on the floor.

“Stupid bitch!” Bianca spat and walked out of the room, slamming the door shut.

Alessia let out the breath she’d been holding in as a stray tear tracked down her face. She had no idea what she had done to make her sister hate her so much.

—

By midnight, Alessia could barely feel her arms. She had spent hours sorting laundry, folding sheets and carrying baskets. When she finally finished, she carried the last basket down the almost dark utility corridor toward the servant staircase.

The scene from earlier, Bianca’s cruel words still cut deep into her heart. She couldn’t understand why anyone would think that she wanted Cassian.

The moment she turned the corner, a figure stepped away from the wall.

Alessia stopped so abruptly the basket slipped from her hands, spilling folded linens across the stone. Her heart slammed against her chest as she recognized Cassian. He stood in the narrow passage, blocking her path. She stepped backward until her shoulders hit the wall.

“Cassian,” her voice was barely a whisper.

He stared at her in the dim light , then reached into his pocket. Alessia flinched in terror and a faint crease appeared between his brows. He pulled out a small leather pouch and Alessia watched as he opened it. Tobacco.

Cassian took a thin sheet of rolling paper and began preparing a cigarette. His hands were steady. He brought out his silver lighter, flipped it open and lit it, the sudden orange flare illuminating his hard jaw and cold silver eyes. Cassian lit the cigarette, snapped the lighter shut, and took a slow drag.

“Can… can I pass?” she whispered. “Please.”

Cassian took another drag, letting smoke curl from his mouth. “Why are you always afraid?”

When she didn’t respond, he took a step toward her. Alessia pressed harder against the wall. He stopped close enough that she had to tilt her head to look at him, his eyes settling on the pulse beating rapidly in her throat.

“Leave it,” he ordered quietly when she raised a hand to cover her neck. Her hand dropped reluctantly, smoke drifted toward her face. “You’re crying.”

“I’m not,” she whimpered.

“You’re a terrible liar.”

She turned her face away. His hand suddenly came up, making her jerk back, but his fingers hovered without touching her before dropping away. An expression of mild irritation crossed his face. “You’re scared of everything.”

“I’m not.”

“Good,” Cassian said. He stepped back and gestured toward the floor. “Pick them up.”

“What?”

He tilted his chin toward the spilled linens. Alessia crouched immediately, gathering the sheets with shaking hands while he watched. When she reached for the final piece, Cassian’s shoe came into view beside her.

“Look at me.”

Slowly, she raised her head. Cassian crouched down, bringing his face leveled with hers.

“Do you know what I hate about frightened people?” his voice dropped low. “They lie.”

Alessia swallowed. “I… I haven’t lied.”

“Everyone lies.” He stood up, stepping around her.

Alessia watched him walk toward the end of the corridor, assuming he was leaving. Then he stopped and looked over his shoulder.

“Next time you see me, don’t run.”

Alessia stared at him from the floor. “Why?”

Cassian’s expression went blank. “Because I’ll assume you’re hiding something, Dolcezza.”

Then he disappeared into the darkness.

Alessia stayed on the floor, listening until his footsteps faded completely.

Her hands were shaking so violently she had dropped half the linens again. She gathered them slowly, hugging the basket against her chest. Cassian didn’t scream, strike her, or touch her, yet he could stand in a dark hallway and make her feel entirely trapped.

Bianca had just warned her to stay away from him. And now he had given her an order that terrified her.

Don’t run.

Men like Cassian didn’t give warnings for nothing — they gave them because they expected total obedience.

Alessia blinked rapidly at his words. He wanted a thank you? She knew he had saved her more than once, but he had also tormented her in his own way.Her mind raced as she tried to make sense of the absurd demand, her arms still pinned firmly above her head. He spoke as though he were some heroic savior who had stepped in because he cared, yet he held her against his sofa with the same ruthless strength as the men who wanted to hurt her. Every interaction with Cassian felt like a double edged sword. He protected her from Rocco's brutality, only to replace it with his own dark, suffocating kind of control.Like she always did when she was scared or helpless, she bit her lower lip, her teeth catching the flesh in a way that made the gesture look almost seductive. She hadn't meant to do it. It was an unconscious habit, something she did whenever the panic in her chest became too difficult to swallow. Her small, sharp teeth pressed into the delicate skin of her bottom lip, right where R

Rocco’s jaw clenched hard. “I just said—” he started, but Cassian cut him off before he could dig deeper.“Don’t make me repeat myself… Prieto,” Cassian didn’t even bother to look at him. He turned back to his desk, flicking ash from his cigarette like Rocco was already gone. The room’s silence stretched colder and uncomfortable, thick with tension and almost suffocating. Cassian’s back stayed mostly turned, calm and unbothered, too busy watching smoke twist toward the ceiling to care about the furious man glaring black holes into him.Rocco’s fists clenched so tight his knuckles went white. Still, he managed a forced, polite nod. “Alright then… have a good day,” he said, every word scraping over his teeth. He turned to Alessia, ready to drag her out, but Cassian’s voice stopped him cold.“I asked you to leave, Prieto,” Cassian said, his voice cold as steel. “Not her.”Rocco froze, his grip bruising Alessia’s arm. His face twisted. “She’s my fiancée, De Rossi.” He spat the words like

Alessia’s almost cried out as Rocco let go of her shoulders and clamped his fingers around her wrist, dragging her behind the guard. Every step felt like trudging through quicksand, something heavy and invisible pulling her deeper, all while her arm burned where his nails dug into her skin. Her lip was still bleeding, she tasted the metallic tang and felt her hair, wild and sticky, clinging to her damp, swollen face. She stared at the cold marble floor, bare feet trembling, too scared to look up. Mess up even once, she thought, and Rocco would make good on those threats right here in this corridor. They stepped into the elevator and rode it all the way up. Why was Cassian here? How did he even know where she was? The silence inside was suffocating. The mirrored doors kept sending her battered reflection back at her — no escape. Just a bruised, broken girl standing between two dangerous men who owned everything, her hope included. The chill from the glass walls bit at her skin, bu

Alessia froze. She wasn’t sure she’d really heard him right. “W... what?”The words felt heavy in the air, thick and cold, pressing her down with shame so raw her brain didn’t want to process it. Her hands twitched against the fabric of her gown. Her breath caught, vision swimming with tears she refused to let fall.“You heard me, mi belleza.” Rocco’s grin widened as he licked his lower lip.His eyes drank her in possesively, landing on her trembling hands, her fear-stricken face. He clearly enjoyed it — watching her panic, knowing she was trapped here with him, far from the rest of the world.“No.” The word was barely audible, a tiny, desperate whisper, but it felt loud in the silent room. “No. I won’t do that.”All amusement vanished from Rocco’s face. He stood up so fast the chair barely had time to scrape. Before she could bolt, he crossed the room in three long strides and caught her at the waist, yanking her flush against him.The air whooshed out of her too fast. His fingers

The drive to the boutique dragged on for two hours. Alessia sat pressed up against the car door, desperate for as much space as possible from Rocco sitting beside her. He hadn’t said a word since she got in — not one — but his eyes never left her. She could feel him watching every anxious swallow, every twitch in her hands. Even the sound of his slow, deliberate puffs on a cigar seemed loud in the silence. Honestly, she would’ve preferred shouting. This quiet, smothering tension was worse than any threat he could make.Every mile away from the De Rossi estate felt like she was walking toward her own destruction. Rocco leaned back, legs crossed, mouth set in a hard line, just waiting. Alessia’s skin crawled he was biding his time until no one else was around. When they finally reached the boutique, Alessia barely had time to take in the building — a huge place of glass and dark marble, tucked behind security gates and as intimidating as any fortress. The summons came early two days later. Rocco had arrived, and he was taking her to the boutique to buy the engagement party dress. Alone. The thought of being alone with him in a private dressing room made a shiver run down her spine. It had been three days since her escape attempt. Despite giving her a new room, her mother had worked her almost to death. Her hands were bruised, and her legs wobbled from weakness.Every part of her small body hurt. Elena had made sure every waking hour since the failed escape was spent working. Alessia had spent the last three days scrubbing marble floors on her knees, carrying heavy laundry crates up and down three flights of stairs, and taking slaps whenever she slowed down. It was punishment. Her mother wanted to break whatever courage Alessia still had before handing her over to the Prieto syndicate. There were dark circles under her eyes, and her lip was cracked. She stared at herself in the mirror, and a sob escaped her.The girl staring back
