KATHARINA

The first thing I felt was flesh in my palms.

Warm, solid flesh, where fur should have been.

For half a second, my mind froze, refusing to process what my senses were telling me, insisting I was mistaken.

Then my gaze focused.

Broad shoulders pressed against my chest. The unmistakable lines of a grown man’s upper body.

Slowly, my eyes traveled upward—only to collide with a pair of striking blue eyes, wide with panic and unease, yet unmistakably the same eyes I had seen on the pup.

Something inside me went utterly still.

A werewolf.

Not a wild wolf.

A werewolf.

How could I have missed that?

How could I have mistaken a werewolf for an ordinary wolf pup?

I had probed his body thoroughly when we first met, examining it inside and out. There had been no trace of shifter energy: none of the unique signatures werewolves carried.

Nor had there been any sign of a disguise or illusion spell.

And yet—

Now I had to admit the truth.

It was that very confidence that had become my undoing.

XANDERThe following day coincided with the monthly Council Meeting.I sat at the head of the circular table, Jaxon to my right, the five Elders spread evenly around us.“Jaxon,” I said, signaling the start of the meeting, “brief the Elders on the company’s quarterly report.”“Yes, Alpha Xander,” Jaxon replied, rising to his feet with documents in his hands.Only to be cut off.“Before that,” a voice interjected smoothly, “I believe the Council deserves an explanation as to why the Alpha was absent from the territory these past few days.”My gaze shifted to the speaker seated directly across from me.Unsurprisingly, it was Elder Hatton. The man truly didn’t know when to quit.Still, as an Elder responsible for Pack law and tradition, he had the standing to raise such concerns. Hatton was exceptionally skilled at hiding personal agendas behind official authority.“As I instructed my Beta to inform you,” I replied unhurriedly, my tone calm to the point of indifference, “I had urgent per

  • The Cursed Alpha And His Hybrid Mate    Chapter 18

XANDEROver here, I was blissfully unaware that my Beta was on the verge of a complete breakdown because of my disappearance. It wasn’t that I didn’t know he’d be worried: of course he would be. But what could I possibly do? My hands were tied.I couldn’t risk exposure by entering the territory in my current state, and I couldn’t send a mind link either—the range was limited. With no way to contact him, all I could do was make the best of my time here. And honestly?I was enjoying it.Here, I didn’t have to worry about anything. I didn’t have to rack my brain deflecting overt and covert schemes from within and beyond the territory. I didn’t have to shoulder my responsibilities as Alpha like an unrelenting burden.Ever since I took over from my father, this was the first time I’d felt genuinely relaxed.Of course, every now and then, concerns would creep in—about how Jaxon was holding up while covering for me, about the future of the pack. And there was also the matter of time. The thr

JAXONI swear Xander would drive me to madness sooner or later.Never had I regretted a decision more than I did in this very moment.“I should’ve followed my gut and never agreed to let him go to the forbidden grounds,” I muttered through gritted teeth, my voice low.I’d lost count of how many times that thought had replayed in my head.Pacing back and forth across the study, I dragged a hand through my hair, frustration and worry etched across my face. Two days.It had been two days since I last heard from him—two days since he’d left for the forbidden grounds and vanished without a word.I knew Xander better than anyone. He had a strong sense of responsibility; disappearing like this without explanation was not something he would ever do unless he’d encountered a tricky problem that tied him up.And that was exactly why my chest felt so tight.Several grim possibilities surfaced in my mind, one worse than the last.Maybe he’d failed to pass through his so-called mate’s enchantment

  • The Cursed Alpha And His Hybrid Mate    Chapter 16

XANDERI had always known I was destined to die young. But never had that truth struck me with such brutal clarity as it did in this very moment.I was only twenty-five.I had thought that even if I couldn’t live as long as Grandma Paulina, I would at least make it into my forties—maybe my fifties. After all, my predecessors had all reached, or come close to, the century mark.My father himself had passed at ninety-nine.So no, I wasn’t ready.Nothing was ready.Jaxon wasn’t prepared to take over. The Pack wasn’t prepared to lose its Alpha. Without proper succession or preparation, Crescent Ridge would plunge into chaos the moment I died. And with that, I would have failed—not just my people, but the ancestors who had sworn, generation after generation, to protect this land.A violent surge of hatred rose within me, sudden and unrestrained—directed at the ancient witch who had cursed my bloodline.Whatever grievance she had held against my ancestor should have ended with him.Why drag
