CHAPTER THREE
“Life is a barter of choice and consequences”
SAMANTHA SOTTO
THE DUKE
I do not know what has brought me to the abode of an enemy except that I wanted to see his daughter again, the one they called Guinevere and so I had drafted up a contract before coming in hopes that he was going to see from my angle and give me her hand in marriage. It wasn't that I could not just take her but I was trying to be civil. She looked and smelled as beautiful and tempting as she had when I had first seen her years ago, she was surprised to see me alright which gave me a very warm feeling… it was strange that I was satisfied at her surprise. Contrary to the belief about Vampires we are not all cold blooded and heartless but I am among the cold blooded ones. I have lived for centuries and have seen people and loved ones come and go, mostly I have travelled from one place to another anytime my presence starts to arouse suspicions from the local authorities and this not because I cannot bend the rules but because I did not want to.
Guinevere ran up to call her papa who instructed her to escort me to his study where he ushered me into a seat although from the look on his face he would have preferred I was standing or somewhere far from his manor.
"You wanted to see me?" He asked after sending Guinevere away.
"I do not want to bore you with talks that have no relation to why I am here today, I have come to ask for your daughter's hand in marriage."
"I refuse"
"Well I have heard you are in severe debt. You are owing the cosa nostra a very huge sum of money and have even made plans to marry your daughters off to them. Does your wife know about your debts." I asked politely
"How dare you come here and think you can meddle in my family's business." He raged
"I am only here to warn you Oliver, your deal with the cosa nostra will fall through. From what information I have been able to gather, they will arrive at your house in two days and murder including your wife and children. Your line will end except you let me help you”
"How did you come about this information?" he asked, still trying to sound tough but I could already smell his fear.
"They asked for my help in executing their plans." I said simply
He looked at me like I had grown another head definitely unable to believe his ears
"And you refused to help them because let me guess you want my daughter, Guinevere for yourself."
"I will help you on that day if you sign this contract and promise that your daughter will be mine after that."
"I will sign it on one condition."
"Let's hear it." I smiled. Humans had this funny way of always thinking they were in charge and it was irking. He knew I could snap his head within the twinkling of an eye but he still was insistent on acting tough.
"You are not to harm a hair on her head, I know you are a vampire. You drink blood and although I hate the very sight of you, you are the lesser evil. I will sign the contract." He announced
"Good, I will leave it with you and arrive in two days." I said and got up to leave.
"Please send Guinevere in” He said as soon as I got to the door
I nodded at him and opened the door to catch Guinevere standing there, pretending to clean the statue beside it.
"You did not need to eavesdrop." I told her smiling at the way she blushed to the roots of her hair, her scent had grown stronger and it took all of my willpower to stop myself from reaching for her and sinking my fangs in her throat, she would be mine soon to do as I please.
"I wasn't eavesdropping, besides I could hardly hear what was being said."
"You can go in." I told her
Her eyes held an innocence I could only hope to have, even if her papa had not accepted my proposal, I still would not have allowed anyone harm a hair on her head. That was how much I craved and wanted to possess her, it was like an obsession.
I left their house fiddling the ring that protected me from the sun, it was forged long ago when this society still hosted witches from far and wide and when I was but a budding vampire but that was a long time ago
GUINEVERE
I watched him leave sighing, he was so beautiful and magnificent, he even literally glittered in the sun. There was something about him I could not place my finger on and that was what made him even more attractive. He had caught me trying to listen in on his conversation with my papa and I had felt so embarrassed.
My papa's shoulders were down when I went into his study and I wondered at what the duke had come to tell him
"Sit down Guinevere." He said
I sat and waited for him to continue, there was something off about him and it was making me nervous
"You will be twenty years and three by the next calendar and I know I have not really being fair in addressing matters that concern you." My papa began
"The duke wants your hand in marriage and I have agreed." He dropped the bombshell
The ringing in my ears refused to stop even when I shook my head to clear it
"I don't understand what you mean, papa" I gasped with the dream I had had flooding my head. I had dreamt that we got married and it was happening. I held myself from jumping up or pounding my fist on the table as I observed my papa solemnly, he did not seem happy about the news and I wondered why
"I am owing a debt to the cosa nostra and they have plans to slaughter us. The duke has decided to help us only on the condition that I let him marry you."
"I understand father, when shall this wedding take place?" I asked calmly although my heart was leaping and singing in my chest
"In two days we shall decide after I must have told your mama, I am so sorry for roping you into this." He said and he looked truly sorry
"There is nothing to be sorry about papa, I would do anything for this family." I told him. He must have noticed the joy on my face because he shook his head in pity
"You do not understand Guinevere, he is only marrying you to kill you."
"Marrying me to kill me?" I echoed, clearly confused
"The duke is a vampire, drinker of blood."
That is impossible, I refuse to believe you." I gasped holding my head to ward off the evil my father had just uttered.
"I would never lie to you my daughter, I just hope I haven't pushed you to your death." My papa said shaking his head also
CHAPTER FOUR“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but In having new eyes”MARCEL PROUSTGUINEVEREThroughout the next day the only thing that rang in my heart was that the duke was a vampire and a drinker of blood. I wanted to call my papa a liar and ask him to tell me the truth this instant but deep in my heart I knew that he was not lying, my mind went back to when I had met the duke and now and how much he hasn't aged a day. I had heard about vampires and that they were ruthless and cold blooded, drank blood and killed without mercy.Does he also have fangs? I asked myself as I walked about the manor hardly seeing. Is that why he had always paid attention to me, so he could drink my blood? I asked no one in particular. My papa and mama had a huge fight the night the duke came to see my papa and I began hating him for causing my family pain, hating him for being so handsome that I did not care if he was a vampire, I would still marry him.My mama came
CHAPTER FIVE“When you walk to the edge of all the light you have and then take that first step into the darkness of the unknown, you must believe that one of two things will happen. There will be something solid for you to stand upon or you will be taught to fly”PATRICK OVERTONTHE DUKEWe drove slowly, I had instructed Arthur to take his time driving because I did not want her to be discomforted. Closing my eyes although I wasn't asleep reduced her anxiety in being alone in the carriage with me and so I closed my eyes, all of my other senses super aware of all her movements. She was twirling fingers and glancing at me from time to time, I could hear her breathing and could smell her scent so strongly."Can you not teleport?" She asked me after some time"I can""Then why are you riding in this carriage." She asked again, her voice getting stronger"Teleporting drains energy""What do you when your energy is drained.""You are awfully curious." I responded opening my eyes to observe
CHAPTER SIX“There is only one kind of shock worse than the totally unexpected: the expected for which one has refused to prepare”MARY RENAULTGUINEVEREI froze where I stood and glanced up at him definitely sure he was joking, his wife… how could that be?"You are surprised" he stated simply observing my face"Why do we look so alike?" I asked him trying hard to regulate my breathing"I have no idea, I aim to find out." He mutteredHe aims to find out, my brain echoed"How, pray tell do you intend to find out?" I blurtedHe merely looked at me not acknowledging the fact that he heard what I said. I stood in front of the photo for several minutes critically assessing it, the only difference between myself and the woman in the painting was our hair. While mine was red, hers was jet black although I could not be sure; the artist might have just painted her hair in that shade.I turned to ask the duke another question and noticed he was gone, it was bad enough that I was here and now I
CHAPTER SEVEN“She is clarity and confusion, never enough… always too much. A simple, complicated and perfectly flawed mess”PERRY POETRYTHE DUKEShe was watching me, staring at me eat even when she knew I was aware. She was supposed to be afraid of me, what was she doing staring at me with those soulful and innocent eyes."Aren't you supposed to drink only blood?" She had asked me.I had wanted to respond immediately and tell her the food wasn't enough and that blood was my main source of nutrients but I decided to tease her a bit and asked if she was offering herself to me.Her expression showed she took me seriously and I winced as she sat up straight in her chair and focused solely on her food not glancing at me even once againI heard her exclaim and turned, she had cut herself and I had immediately taken her finger in my mouth forgetting that her scent was something I could not resist. I had been anticipating tasting her for quite a while but it did not compare to the rush of b
CHAPTER EIGHT“There are moments when I wish I could roll back the clock and take all the sadness away, but I have the feeling that if I did, the joy would be gone as well”NICHOLAS SPARKSGUINEVEREHe was right, I was not his wife and would never be, so why was my heart beating in such painful ways and why was I blinded with tears as I fled his presence.Did I want him to love me?I shook my head at the thought, I barely knew him and while I found the Duke attractive, he was a vampire and he only wanted to kill me.Words my mama had told me flew into my heart as I fled, she had been right. I was nothing to the duke but food and he was going to marry me out of pity for my parents so I did not die without the name tag "marriage"I walked into my room and flopped on the bed before pulling the blanket over my head. I must have dozed off for a bit as I did not notice the maid enter my room, I only heard her moving about singing under her breath."What pray tell are you muttering about?" I
CHAPTER NINE“Energy is the essence of life. Every day you decide how you are going to use it by knowing what you want and what it takes to reach the goal and by maintaining focus”OPRAH WINFREYTHE DUKEI had almost let myself be consumed by her… I had watched her try to hide from me because I had hurt her. I wasn't one to feel sympathetic or sorry about anything but I was sorry I had made her cry. She was of the idea that I was going to kill her, I was but she did not need to know that. The only reason I had Guinevere over at my place was because she looked like my dead wife, their resemblance so uncanny that if someone from that time saw her right now, they would mistake her for Katherine and have her killed right on the spot."Arthur!""Yes your grace, you called for me.""Send a carriage to the account of Hemishire, let him know that the duke requires his presence.""Am I to escort him myself, your grace.""There will be no need for that, he is capable.""As you wish" Arthur bowe
CHAPTER TEN“Luxury lives in the finer details. It is a cloth napkin at a dinner table. It is a mint on your pillow before bed”IGGY AZALEAGUINEVEREWe arrived at the house of my papa with the duke and I not talking to one another. His eyes were closed just as it had been when he had taken me from my papa's house and his hands fisted by his side. At that time I had wondered at why he kept his eyes closed but now I could imagine it was because he did not want to be involved in a conversation with me which was for the better because it gave me ample time to think about what I shall do immediately I become his wife and how I could avoid whatever experiments he had planned for me.I was deep in thought when the carriage came to a stop in front of my papa's manor, the duke opened his eyes and turned to me."You should go inside first, I have something I need to take care of first.""I shall wait here for you and then we shall go in together." I told him.I did not want to go into the hous
CHAPTER ELEVEN“Find out where joy resides, and give it a voice far beyond singing. For to miss the joy is to miss all”ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSONTHE DUKEI was smiling...I was alone in my bed chambers and smiling which did not bode well. The thoughts of the evening replayed in my mind, her father trying to get me to cancel the wedding with his daughter and Guinevere's eyes pleading that I do not believe a word he was saying.Humans were funny creatures and although I had been one myself, I could hardly understand how their mind worked. Did he really think that I was going to cancel the wedding because of a baseless rumor such as that? Of course he had no idea that his daughter was the exact replica of my deceased wife, hence the lies.I smiled again shaking my head at the look on Guinevere's face when I had asked if she wanted me to confirm her status, she had thought I was serious. Well, I was serious but she was not ready for any intimacy with me and I wasn't ready until I was sure o
