Ethan stared at the torn papers in his hand, his jaw flexing with restrained fury.

The divorce papers.

Her signature.

Her attempt to disappear from his life without his permission.

A cold, dangerous smile tugged at the corner of his lips.

He leaned back in his chair, but his eyes hardened.

“Or maybe… you’re hiding something.”

The thought unsettled him more than he liked to admit. And when it came to Lilian, uncertainty was something he despised.

Her hand drifted unconsciously to her stomach, and her chest tightened.

“No matter what happens,” she whispered, “my child will never be your pawn, Ethan.”

She had believed she hid the divorce papers well. Ethan was careless with most things, especially things concerning her.

when love refuses to give you light, it’s better to pick the pieces of your heart and start mending it without looking back… Lilian didn’t bother telling Ethan about her mother’s death, nor did she tell him about her pregnancy. What was the point? He wouldn’t care. He hadn’t cared about her tears, her pain, or the woman who raised her. So she buried her mother alone. When the tall gates of the Brook mansion finally came into view, her knees almost gave out. That place — once her safe haven — now felt like a battlefield she was too tired to fight on. Her fingers shook as she reached for the front door. The moment it opened, a scent of fresh coffee and polished wood filled her senses. And then she saw him. Ethan. Standing at the entrance, his tie perfectly knotted, his expression unreadable, the weight of his presence still commanding. He looked every bit the powerful
