Elena

"You should be sleeping, Elena."

I flinched at the sound of Aeron's voice. I didn't even hear him open the door.

I pulled the blanket tighter around my shoulders. "I can't sleep."

"Why?" He stepped inside. "Is the bed uncomfortable?"

"No."

"Then what is it?"

"Everything," I said, looking out at the rain against the glass. "My father is searching for me. My mother is probably deleting me from the family photos. And I'm sitting in my sister's fiancé's bedroom."

"This isn't your sister's roo

Elena"What... what are you talking about?" I breathed, my pulse hammering wildly against the grip of his fingers on my neck.Aeron pulled back just enough to look into my eyes, his expression unreadable and fierce."You left your silver locket on my nightstand that night, Elena," he said, his voice silky and quiet. "The one with your initials engraved on the back. The one you've worn since you were twelve years old."I stared at him, my lips parting in shock. My hand instinctively flew to my collarbone, where the familiar thin chain had been missing for months. I had thought I lost it in the panic of running away from the hotel, or that it had slipped down a storm drain."I didn't care about Isabella's tantrums then, and I don't care about them now," Aeron continued, his thumb tracing the sharp line of my jawline. "Do you really think I would let her destroy my life over a secret I already owned?""She's outside right now, Aeron!" I panicked, trying to pull away from his touch, but h

Elena"Wake up, Elena."My eyes snapped open. Aeron stood at the foot of the bed, his dark hair messy, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows.I pulled the woolen blanket up to my chin, sinking back into the pillows. "What time is it?""Five in the morning," he said."Why are you standing in my room at five in the morning?""Your father's security team just left the main gate," Aeron said flatly. "They spent the last two hours searching the road at the bottom of the hill."A cold spike of terror shot straight through my stomach. I sat up quickly, the blanket slipping down my chest. "Did they come inside?""No.""Did they see my footprints? Did they see your guards?""I don't leave traces on my property, Elena," Aeron said, his tone completely even. "And my guards know better than to open their mouths to your father's people."I pressed my bandaged palm against my chest, feeling the frantic, hammering beat of my heart beneath my ribs. "He really isn't stopping.""Of course he isn't stoppi

It's mine.""That doesn't make it better, Aeron.""It makes you safe," he said flatly. "That's all that matters.""Safe from who? My father? Or you?""Do you think I brought you here to hurt you?""I don't know why you brought me here," I said, getting up from the window ledge. "You haven't explained a single thing since I got into your car.""I don't owe you explanations.""You do!" The blanket dropped to my elbows. "You picked me up. You brought me to your house. You lied to my father on th

Elena"Eat the food, Elena, but leave the pills on the table," I whispered to myself into the heavy silence of the room, repeating the rule that was keeping my baby safe. The sound of the heavy wooden door clicking shut behind Aeron had left a ringing quiet in the master guest suite. I sat still on the edge of the plush mattress, staring down at my white, bandaged hands. My palms still throbbed with a dull, steady ache under the clean gauze, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the storm raging inside my head.My father knew I was gone. He had already called Aeron's security team to search the main estate roads. Right now, he was probably pacing the grand halls of our mansion, barking orders at his guards and threatening my mother for letting me slip out of that locked bedroom. If Aeron hadn't pulled up to that bus shelter when he did, I would already be locked in the back of my father's car on the way to that clinic.I

ElenaThe iron gates closed behind us with a loud, heavy metallic thud, sealing off the dark, rainy world outside.Aeron drove up a long, curving driveway lined with towering pine trees that swayed under the heavy wind. At the end of the drive sat a massive, three-story stone mansion illuminated by warm yellow lights. It looked more like a fortress than a home, cold, grand, and completely isolated from the rest of the world. He brought the car to a smooth stop right in front of the wide stone steps leading to the main entrance. He turned off the engine, dropping the cabin into a sudden, heavy quiet."Stay here," he ordered quietly, unbuckling his seatbelt. Before I could answer, he opened his door and stepped out into the pouring rain. He walked around the front of the hood, opened my door, and extended a hand toward me.I stared at his long, bare fingers, then looked up into his face. Rain streamed down his dark ha

Elena"I said get in, Elena," the voice repeated, sharp and unyielding over the heavy drum of the rain.I stood completely frozen under the shelter’s metal roof, my wet duffel bag clutched tightly against my ribs. The bright headlights cut straight through the darkness, blinding me as the driver leaned across the console to push the passenger door open. Warm, dry air rushed out into the freezing night, carrying the scent of rich leather, expensive cologne, and cold rain.It was Aeron Blackwood. My heart slammed violently against my ribs, so hard I thought it would shatter. Of all the people in this massive city, of all the dark shadows that could have pulled up to this empty bus stop, it had to be him. The powerful, ruthless man who had taken my innocence in that dark hotel room just weeks ago. The man who was supposed to marry my sister Isabella in a matter of months."I... I can't," I stammered, my voice breaking into a fragile whisper against the noise of the storm. My boots felt r
