LOGINElena
Mom didn't scream. Instead, she sat slowly beside me, her voice trembling. "How... how in God's name did this happen, Elena?"
I choked back a sob, and with my voice breaking at every second word, I told her everything.
When I finished, her hands moved slowly to cup mine. I cried harder at the warmth of her fingers. I couldn't remember the last time she'd looked at me so tenderly.
"Does..." She closed her eyes and swallowed. "Does he know?"
I shook my head violently. "No. No, he doesn't. He probably doesn't even remember my face. It was dark, and he seemed a bit drunk and all."
Mom let out a long breath, opening her eyes. Slowly, her hands dropped from mine.
"Then it's all good. There's no problem then."
I looked up at her. "No problem?"
She nodded. "All we have to do is get rid of it. No need to cause a scene."
I froze, unable to believe the words that had just come out of her mouth.
"W... what?"
"You heard me," she replied, her voice disturbingly calm. "We'll go to a clinic tomorrow and get it done. No need to trouble your dad and your sister."
"No," I gasped, wrapping my arms tightly around my stomach. "No, Mom! No! Please!"
"Don't you dare start crying!" she hissed. "Look at the situation, Elena! Aeron Blackwood is your sister’s fiancé. In less than a year, he will be your brother-in-law! Do you have any idea what would happen if anyone—if the Blackwood family, if the press, if Isabella—found out about this?"
"I don't care about the Blackwoods!" I sobbed, the tears blinding me as I shook my head violently. "I don't care about the family name, or the company, or the press! Mom, please, listen to me! I'm begging you!"
"You don't care?" She let out a cold, incredulous laugh. "Of course you don't care! You never care about anyone but yourself! You have spent your entire life being a drag on this family, and now, on the absolute greatest night of your sister's life, you bring a bastard to our doorstep?"
"It's my baby!" I screamed, holding onto her sleeve. "Mom, please! Look at me! It's your grandchild! It's a living human being inside me!"
She didn't move, only looked at me with nothing but cold, unyielding disgust.
"I won't tell anyone," I pleaded. "I swear to you, I will never say a word! Isabella can marry Aeron! She can have the Blackwood name, she can have the money, she can have everything! I don't want any of it! Just let me leave! Let me pack my bags, go far away, and have my baby in peace! I won't ever come back! I won't ever ruin her happiness!"
"Do you really think you're that clever?" She yanked her dress out of my hands and stood up. "You think you can just wander off, give birth to Aeron Blackwood's child, and pretend it won't destroy your sister?"
"I won't tell him!" I cried, pushing myself off the bed onto my hands and knees. "He will never know! Nobody will ever know!"
"A child is not a secret you can bury in the closet!" my mother snarled. "A child grows! A child has a face! What happens when he looks just like Aeron? What happens ten years from now when you run out of money and come crawling back to blackmail him? What happens when Isabella finds out that her husband slept with her own pathetic sister before he proposed to her?!"
"I would never do that to her!"
"It doesn't matter what you would or wouldn't do!" she snapped, stepping backward and kicking my hands away as I reached for her again. "The mere existence of that bastard would be a knife hanging directly over Isabella's neck for the rest of her life in her husband's house! Every time Aeron looked at her, every time they had an argument, that mistake of yours would be sitting right there in the shadows, waiting to tear her marriage apart!"
"It wasn't a mistake to me!" I screamed back. "It's a life, Mom! It's my child! How can you stand there and ask me to kill my own baby?!"
"Because it is a parasite that will ruin this family!" she roared. "You slept with a stranger like a street girl! You threw away your dignity, and now you want us to sacrifice Isabella's entire future, our family's standing, and millions of dollars in business deals just so you can play mother to a bastard?!"
"I'm not doing it," I whispered, pulling my body back against the edge of the bed, hugging my knees to my chest, my body shaking. "I won't do it. You can't force me. It's my body, and it's my baby."
It was crazy how protective I felt toward the little life growing inside me. I hadn't even known this child existed yesterday. It felt strange. Terrifying, even.
But the thought of losing it made my stomach wrench and my heart bleed.
Maybe because I knew what it felt like to grow up unwanted. To feel like there was always someone more important, someone more deserving of love.
I couldn't do that to my own child. Not when it had done nothing wrong. It hadn't even asked to be created. It had simply come to the wrong mother, and I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I couldn't even protect it.
Mom watched me for a while and straightened.
"It's nice that you think you have a choice. Shows you're finally growing a spine. But your games aren't appreciated this time around."
"Mom, please—"
"You have always been selfish," she continued softly, ignoring me. "But I will not allow you to destroy Isabella."
"Mom," I cried, my voice barely a whisper. "I'm also your daughter. I'm really going to die if I lose this child. You can't do this... please."
Her expression didn't change.
"I can, Elena. And you'll thank me someday."
She walked toward the door and opened it.
"Your father will be back in an hour. I will explain the situation to him. And by tomorrow morning, this mistake will be erased. Whether you like it or not."
Elena"What... what are you talking about?" I breathed, my pulse hammering wildly against the grip of his fingers on my neck.Aeron pulled back just enough to look into my eyes, his expression unreadable and fierce."You left your silver locket on my nightstand that night, Elena," he said, his voice silky and quiet. "The one with your initials engraved on the back. The one you've worn since you were twelve years old."I stared at him, my lips parting in shock. My hand instinctively flew to my collarbone, where the familiar thin chain had been missing for months. I had thought I lost it in the panic of running away from the hotel, or that it had slipped down a storm drain."I didn't care about Isabella's tantrums then, and I don't care about them now," Aeron continued, his thumb tracing the sharp line of my jawline. "Do you really think I would let her destroy my life over a secret I already owned?""She's outside right now, Aeron!" I panicked, trying to pull away from his touch, but h
Elena"Wake up, Elena."My eyes snapped open. Aeron stood at the foot of the bed, his dark hair messy, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows.I pulled the woolen blanket up to my chin, sinking back into the pillows. "What time is it?""Five in the morning," he said."Why are you standing in my room at five in the morning?""Your father's security team just left the main gate," Aeron said flatly. "They spent the last two hours searching the road at the bottom of the hill."A cold spike of terror shot straight through my stomach. I sat up quickly, the blanket slipping down my chest. "Did they come inside?""No.""Did they see my footprints? Did they see your guards?""I don't leave traces on my property, Elena," Aeron said, his tone completely even. "And my guards know better than to open their mouths to your father's people."I pressed my bandaged palm against my chest, feeling the frantic, hammering beat of my heart beneath my ribs. "He really isn't stopping.""Of course he isn't stoppi
Elena"You should be sleeping, Elena."I flinched at the sound of Aeron's voice. I didn't even hear him open the door.I pulled the blanket tighter around my shoulders. "I can't sleep.""Why?" He stepped inside. "Is the bed uncomfortable?""No.""Then what is it?""Everything," I said, looking out at the rain against the glass. "My father is searching for me. My mother is probably deleting me from the family photos. And I'm sitting in my sister's fiancé's bedroom.""This isn't your sister's room. It's mine.""That doesn't make it better, Aeron.""It makes you safe," he said flatly. "That's all that matters.""Safe from who? My father? Or you?""Do you think I brought you here to hurt you?""I don't know why you brought me here," I said, getting up from the window ledge. "You haven't explained a single thing since I got into your car.""I don't owe you explanations.""You do!" The blanket dropped to my elbows. "You picked me up. You brought me to your house. You lied to my father on th
Elena"Eat the food, Elena, but leave the pills on the table," I whispered to myself into the heavy silence of the room, repeating the rule that was keeping my baby safe. The sound of the heavy wooden door clicking shut behind Aeron had left a ringing quiet in the master guest suite. I sat still on the edge of the plush mattress, staring down at my white, bandaged hands. My palms still throbbed with a dull, steady ache under the clean gauze, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the storm raging inside my head.My father knew I was gone. He had already called Aeron's security team to search the main estate roads. Right now, he was probably pacing the grand halls of our mansion, barking orders at his guards and threatening my mother for letting me slip out of that locked bedroom. If Aeron hadn't pulled up to that bus shelter when he did, I would already be locked in the back of my father's car on the way to that clinic.I
ElenaThe iron gates closed behind us with a loud, heavy metallic thud, sealing off the dark, rainy world outside.Aeron drove up a long, curving driveway lined with towering pine trees that swayed under the heavy wind. At the end of the drive sat a massive, three-story stone mansion illuminated by warm yellow lights. It looked more like a fortress than a home, cold, grand, and completely isolated from the rest of the world. He brought the car to a smooth stop right in front of the wide stone steps leading to the main entrance. He turned off the engine, dropping the cabin into a sudden, heavy quiet."Stay here," he ordered quietly, unbuckling his seatbelt. Before I could answer, he opened his door and stepped out into the pouring rain. He walked around the front of the hood, opened my door, and extended a hand toward me.I stared at his long, bare fingers, then looked up into his face. Rain streamed down his dark ha
Elena"I said get in, Elena," the voice repeated, sharp and unyielding over the heavy drum of the rain.I stood completely frozen under the shelter’s metal roof, my wet duffel bag clutched tightly against my ribs. The bright headlights cut straight through the darkness, blinding me as the driver leaned across the console to push the passenger door open. Warm, dry air rushed out into the freezing night, carrying the scent of rich leather, expensive cologne, and cold rain.It was Aeron Blackwood. My heart slammed violently against my ribs, so hard I thought it would shatter. Of all the people in this massive city, of all the dark shadows that could have pulled up to this empty bus stop, it had to be him. The powerful, ruthless man who had taken my innocence in that dark hotel room just weeks ago. The man who was supposed to marry my sister Isabella in a matter of months."I... I can't," I stammered, my voice breaking into a fragile whisper against the noise of the storm. My boots felt r
