Chapter Four
Ava’s POV I watched as the man stepped out of the sleek black car, his movements slow and deliberate. His presence alone demanded attention. Behind him, two bodyguards stood at full alert, their sharp gazes scanning the surroundings. My breath hitched. He was tall, his posture exuding power and confidence. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, the crisp fabric emphasizing his broad shoulders. A pair of dark-tinted glasses hid his eyes, but even without seeing them, I could feel the weight of his gaze. I swallowed hard as my father stepped forward, his expression unreadable. Then, to my utter shock, he did something I had never seen him do before. He bowed his head slightly as he extended his hand toward the man. I froze. My father never bowed to anyone. Never. I had seen him interact with some of the most powerful men in the country, men of wealth and status, and he always carried himself with unwavering authority. Yet now, in front of this man, there was a shift—a respect that almost looked like fear. Who was he? Why did he hold so much power than my father. I barely had time to process it before the man extended his hand and shook my father’s. Their handshake was brief but firm. I stood still, my pulse quickening. Then, his eyes met mine. Even behind the dark lenses of his glasses, I felt the intensity of his stare. A strange, unfamiliar feeling stirred within me, something I had never experienced before—not even with Richard. Not even with the man I have fallen in love with. I looked away quickly, my hands gripping my dress. Why did I feel like this? Before I could make sense of my emotions, my father turned to me. "Ava," he said in a tone that left no room for argument. "This is the man I told you about." The words sent a jolt through me. The man he told me about? Realization dawned, and my stomach twisted. This was him—the man my father had arranged for me to marry. The man I was going to spend my life with forever. My throat went dry as I turned back toward him. He still hadn’t spoken a word. He still hasn't said a word to me. I studied him, taking in his sharp features. His jawline was strong, his lips pressed into a firm line. Even though his face was expressionless, there was something about him that unsettled me. "May I know your name?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. For a moment, there was silence. Then, in a deep and controlled voice, he finally spoke. "Kieran Jason ." His voice sent shivers down my spine. For a moment my body felt cold. Kieran Jason. The name sounded powerful, dangerous even. It was the kind of name that held weight, that people whispered about in hushed conversations. I extended my hand, trying to be polite despite my unease. "I'm Ava Carter. It's nice to meet you." Instead of shaking my hand, Kieran simply stared at it for a second. Then, to my surprise, he slowly pulled his own hand back, refusing to take mine. I froze, my heart skipping a beat. Had I offended him? I hesitated, my mind racing as I tried to remember if I had seen him before. There was something familiar about him, but I couldn’t place it. It was like I had met him somewhere but could not remember where. Kieran took a step toward me, closing the space between us. My breath caught as his towering presence made the air feel heavier. Even without speaking, he exuded control. It was in the way he moved, the way he stood, the way the very surroundings seemed to shift around him. I swallowed down my silver hard. Why did this man hold so much power, even without trying? Before I could question him, my father spoke again. "Come inside, Mr. Jason," he said. "Let’s discuss things further." Kieran gave a small nod before following him inside. I stood frozen for a few moments before forcing myself to move. --- Inside the mansion, the atmosphere felt different. I sat across from Kieran in the grand living room, my father beside him. The tension was suffocating, and yet, I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. Even as my father spoke, explaining something about our families and their connections, I barely processed the words. I was too focused on Kieran. The more I looked at him, the more that nagging feeling inside me grew stronger. Have I seen him before? My thoughts were interrupted when my father suddenly turned to me. "Ava," he said firmly. "You will be staying with Kieran from now on. He had agreed to it" My head snapped up immediately in shock. "What?" "You two need time to get to know each other," my father continued. "It’s best that you move into his estate immediately." I blinked. Had I heard him correctly? "I—" I started, but before I could finish, my father stood up. "I will leave you both alone to talk," he said. I turned to him in shock. "Father, wait—" But he was already walking away, his decision final. A few seconds later, we were alone. Just the two of us. I swallowed nervously, suddenly unsure of what to say. Kieran remained seated, his posture relaxed yet commanding. He hadn’t removed his glasses, making it impossible for me to see his eyes. The silence stretched between us, thick and suffocating. Then, he stood up. My breath hitched as he walked toward me. My body tensed as he extended his hand toward me. For a second, I didn’t move. Was he actually offering his hand this time? Slowly, cautiously, I placed my hand in his. The moment our skin touched, a strange warmth spread through me. Then—it happened. My foot slipped on the smooth marble floor, and I lost my balance. A small gasp escaped my lips as I felt myself falling. But before I could hit the ground, strong arms caught me. I looked up. And for the first time, Kieran removed his glasses. Our eyes met. And immediately I almost forgot how to breathe.Chapter 26: The Right TimeAva's Pov…I curled deeper into the couch, my legs tucked under me and a blanket wrapped around my waist. A soft hum of the ceiling fan mixed with the faint tick of the wall clock. The living room was still, quiet. But not for long. One more day.Just one. That was all I had left before I’d officially step into my father’s company—Blackmist—as myself. No more pretending. No more hiding. No more acting like I didn’t belong. Because I did. I had always belonged. I just hadn’t realized it until now.I leaned back and stared up at the ceiling, but the calm didn’t stay long. I felt something before I even heard him—Kieran’s quiet, deliberate steps. A second later, he appeared in my peripheral vision, holding a glass of juice. He didn’t say anything. Just handed it to me and sat down next to me, like it was the most natural thing in the world. He pulled me closer until my head rested against his shoulder.I let out a slow breath. His warmth made me feel grounded.
Chapter 25: Just Where He BelongsAva's Pov…I took a slow sip of the coffee in front of me, not because I actually wanted it, but because I didn’t want to acknowledge the man standing a few feet away, staring at me like he had the right to. My stomach turned as his scent hit me—a mix of cheap cologne and old bitterness I knew too well. Richard.I didn’t even look up at first. I just kept sipping, eyes locked on the steam swirling off the coffee cup. I thought maybe if I stayed quiet long enough, he’d walk away. But of course not. That man never knew when to leave. He let out a low chuckle, like all this was funny. Then he walked forward and took the seat right across from me—the same seat Kieran had just stood from a moment ago to take a call. I didn’t move. Didn’t flinch. Just raised my eyes and stared right at him.“What are you doing here?” I asked, voice flat. I was tired. Tired of him showing up where he didn’t belong. He smirked. “Is that how you greet your ex-husband? Come on,
Chapter 24 - Quiet Mornings and Unexpected FacesAva's Pov…I opened my eyes slowly, the light from the window creeping in through the thin curtains. I blinked a few times before realizing I wasn’t in a hospital anymore. I was back in Kieran’s room. His bed. His space. My back sank into the softness of the mattress as I pushed myself upright. The ache in my stomach reminded me of everything that had happened.Richard. Lydia. The knife. The hospital. And then Kieran.I sat there a moment, trying to breathe through the strange mix of emotions running through me. Anger. Confusion. Safety. Pain. And this quiet warmth I didn’t know what to do with.I shifted my legs off the bed and stood up slowly, holding my side as I crossed to the window. The view was still the same. Calm. Peaceful. Like nothing had happened yesterday. But I remembered all of it. The look on Richard’s face. Lydia’s insults. The sharp sting of betrayal. And through all of it, Kieran had been there. The door creaked open
Chapter 23: Mine to ProtectAva's Pov…I pulled away from Kieran, just enough to catch my breath and turn toward the door. My eyes locked on Richard and Lydia as they stepped further into the room like they had every right to be here. My throat tightened. I had so many questions, but the one that kept running through my head was simple—how did they even know where I was?Kieran stood up slowly, his body shifting into that protective mode I was starting to recognize. He took a few steps forward and placed himself directly between me and them. “Who are you?” he asked, his voice low and steady.Lydia burst out laughing before Richard could even open his mouth. She turned to him and said, loud enough for all of us to hear, “See? I told you she had a sugar daddy. Just didn’t expect him to be this rich.”My heart dropped. I stared at her, completely stunned. Even after everything, after how far I’d come, they were still trying to paint me as some gold-digger?I glanced at Kieran, whose jaw
Chapter 22: The Breath BetweenAva's Pov…"How dare you speak to me like that?"Demon’s voice dropped low, but the fury in it didn’t need volume to be terrifying. He stepped forward like he intended to strike me again, but before I could blink, Kieran moved. One second he was behind me, the next he slammed his fist into Demon’s jaw with such force that his brother staggered and fell backward.I gasped, frozen.Kieran didn’t stop. He climbed on top of Demon and started punching him—fast, hard, relentless. I flinched every time his fist connected, and still, he didn’t stop. Demon’s head snapped from one side to the other with each blow. Blood sprayed across the floor."Kieran!" I stepped forward, grabbing his arm. "Kieran, stop! That’s enough!" I didn’t want to see this. Not like this. But he wasn’t hearing me. His breathing was rough, almost animal-like, his knuckles red and raw. He raised his hand again."Kieran! Please!" I pulled harder this time, planting my feet. "I’m okay. Just st
Chapter 21 - Standing My GroundAva's Pov…I threw the door open, breath still caught in my throat, and there he was. Kieran. He stood just outside, staring at me like he wasn’t sure he would see me again. As soon as our eyes locked, I stopped thinking. I didn’t even say a word. I just ran into his arms. The second I touched him, I broke down. No warning. No holding it together. Everything I had bottled up came crashing down as I clung to him like my life depended on it.He held me tight, one arm around my back and the other gently cradling the back of my head. “It’s okay,” he said quietly, trying to keep his voice calm. “You’re safe now. I’ve got you. You're safe.”He pulled back just enough to look at my face, his fingers brushing my cheeks. “Did they hurt you?” His voice dropped, more serious now. I could barely answer, my throat tight and sore from yelling earlier. I felt so happy seeing his face again, I thought I wouldn't.Before I could say anything, we both heard footsteps com
