Chapter 9

I was already used to Davis’s bullying since we were in preschool. I mean Davis had always bullied me, he would call me ugly, break my glasses, laugh at me whenever he passed me in class, throw away my food, call me goblin, drag my hair, force me to be his slave and many more and then whenever he helped me and saved me from being bullied by others he would feel like a king who just saved his people or a hero in a movie Akshay Kumar starred, you know when Akshay saves the heroine, he has this moment where he is allowed to walk in with slow Mo and then his hair is flipped by the wind, yep that kind of scene. In high school I was made to follow him anywhere he went for 2 months just because a kid named Rolley called me goblin and then hero Davis Kumar walks in a shuns him from it then tells him only he has the right to call me goblin and that if he ever hears anyone calling me a goblin he would cut his tongue out, yep a drama queen, I had skipped a lot of classes because I was running petty errands for the dignified hero but he did not care if I missed classes or if I was tired he made me suffer, I would always hate the fact that his intervenes because his after payment is a whole lot more than what you would have received from the bully. I was used to his own bullying and I got used to it and ignored him but every time someone else tries to Bully me, he would intervene like an unwanted ant he is, who asked for your help Davis, who the fuck asked for it.

*******

Davis had dropped another episode of his annoyingly piercing lines

“Goblin you are not my type, having anything to do with you is impossible”

Really Davis Garraway, really did you have to? What was that supposed to mean, am I not attractive as a female or do I look like a fellow male gender to you.

“Wake up Wake up it’s time to go to school” my alarm rang immediately then I woke up from the nightmare from the previous night.

“What a dream, wo!” I said to myself, anytime I came a little close to Davis Garraway he ensured he left with something to think about.

“Hold up what time is it” I asked out loud as I noticed my roommates where already done preparing for school.

“8:10 princess, since you want to spend the entire day in your bed” Tiffany responded and Sam acted like she did not hear me.

“What?” I asked as I immediately checked my phone and it was 8:11

“Fuck!” I exclaimed as I jumped out of the bed and headed straight to the bathroom

“Peach no matter how fast you run you will not make it in time for your 9am quiz” Sam added as she laughed at my misfortune. Witch. I quickly took my bath as I came out immediately and then I discovered my roommates had already left. I took the closest things I saw and put on my body as I tried to get to class before 9am.

*******

I finally arrived class at 8:52am, yep, I made it. I arrived class looking like someone who just got hit by a trailer, I looked like a friggin mess. I had a pink top on with a jean jacket on top and then a peach short with a different pair socks, yep a total train reck.

“Settle down students, settle down” the lecturer made his way to the class as the students who were watching me and laughing at how I looked had to sit down.

“Students we will have to post pone our interesting quiz” He continued. Wait what, post pone what exactly? Post pone the reason I came to school with a different pair sock really man, really.

“We have to post pone it as we have with us a new student, he is literally the best student in all of California and the school had to beg him to come to Starman and pursue his international law dream. And after various plea he finally decided to come join us, I do not think it is just for our Star if he has to face a quiz on his first day although not like he won’t pass but it would still be unfair”

“Yenyenyenyeneyenyeneyen” I said out of jealousy

“Huh, did anyone say anything” the lecturer asked as he looked around and then finally continued

“Now he is here with us, without further delay welcome to our department ladies and gentlemen Mr. Derick Mclean” He concluded as the Derick made his way into the class

“You have got to be kidding me” I said to myself as the 6’2 dreamy guy I saw in the bar happened to be the star student “Really universe, really why do you keep bringing trouble my way, hopefully he won’t recognize me” I concluded

“That was kind of too much sir, thank you” he spoke in the amazingly deep voice, sorry I mean in his deep voice.

“No Mr. Mclean you deserved it, now look around the class and go sit wherever you like” the lecturer said as the 6’2 dude scanned the class, I tried to hide my face with my hand then.

“Soda water” he said as he chuckled

“Fuck he recognizes me” I whispered

“What Mr. Mclean? You want soda water?” the lecturer asked

“No no sir, I want too sit close to the girl with the blue jacket” he added. Blue jacket, what blue jacket, oh charity has a blue jacket on, yep, he is coming your way charity.

“Okay, now go settle down Mr. Mclean” the lecturer concluded as the 6’2 dreamy guy, I mean the 6’2 guy made his way to where I was seated.

“Hey is that seat taken?” he asked

“Yes, yes, it is” I replied

“But I do not see anyone sitting there except for your bag” he continued

“You don’t see anyone sitting there? Didn’t you see Chilo? Chilo is clearly sitting there, come on Chilo say hi” I replied as he chuckled lightly

“You are quite the character, you never seize to amaze me, is Chilo what you call your bag or is Chilo your Imaginary friend?” he asked as he chuckled.

“You are disrespecting Chilo, don’t you see her sitting there, now find another soul to disturb” I added as I touched the air or rather Chilo.

“Is there any problem Mr. Mclean?” the lecturer asked

“No sir, I was just grabbing a seat” He responded as he lifted my and and sat down.

“Curse you lecturer” I whispered as Derick heard it and chuckled.

“Why are you laughing, curse you too for killing Chilo with your butt, wait that’s enough with the Chilo” I said as he laughed

“Any problem Mr. Mclean” the lecturer asked again

“No sir, sorry sir” he replied

“You are quite the character you know” he whispered to me as I flashed him a fake smile.

“By the way I’m Derick again” he said as I ignored him then he smiled. Weird. Tell me about it sub conscious.

******

“Hey… hey… hey soda water” Derick called out as he ran after me

“What do you want now annoying piece of the male gender” I whispered

“You know I heard that” he said as he caught up with me

“Derickkk and what do I owe this fine and most exciting visit” I said sarcastically as he chuckled.

“Well, you did not talk to me in class” he responded

“So? Last time I checked we do not know each other” I continued

“Oh, still feisty” he said as he gave his signature smile.

“Okay, but I did not get your name, even at the party” he said

“Well, my name will not come of any use to you” I replied as I started walking away

“If you do not tell me I will keep calling you soda water whenever I see you” he added

“It’s none of my business, suit yourself” I responded as I continued walking.

“I will keep following you till you tell me” He said as I stopped

“Charity, it’s Charity, now please stop bothering me” I concluded as I left.

******

I was at the canteen eating burger and fries when the school’s princess made her way with her entourage to the canteen. She had long golden brown hair, with a caramel completion and a bluish black eye set with a diamond shaped lips. She was truly beautiful. I was still staring at her when the devil made his way to the canteen, yep Davis.

Since when did Davis start eating at the canteen last time I checked he was allergic to canteen food so why is he here today, subconscious asked as she looked at me, me? Why you asking me, do I look like his mom?? Ask him when he comes closer.

Davis walked into the canteen and grabbed a seat then while everyone drooled because of him he sat and looked round like he did not notice the number of girls staring.

“Hey babe” Wow the school’s princess said as she walked up to Davis.

“What would you like to eat?” she asked him as she sat beside him and I glared at them.

“I do not eat canteen food, I just came here cos you said you were here” he continued as I stood up to leave having had enough of everything.

I was leaving with my tray when I bumped into the school’s princess

“Oh I’m so sor…”

“Shut the fuck up you…. Excuse of a lady are you blind or something? And what’s that? Different pair of socks” she said as she laughed with her entourage and Davis sat and looked.

“Look that I bumped into you does not give you right to spit trash about me from your disgusting mouth hole, and to think I even apologized and I’m taking back my apology now it turns out you weren’t worth it after all and yes I’m not at all sorry I bumped into, I guess you deserved it bitch” I concluded as I walked away gloriously, the kind of walk Roman Reigns had when he defeated Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 38 in the winner take all match. Yes, I am a die-hard wrestling fan, I spent most of my nights at home watching wrestling it’s probably the second thing I like asides reading. Oh, oh back to what was going on. I walked out gloriously as I knew she would be staring at me, I was about turning back to see her reaction when she dragged me by my hair and poured dirty water on it.

“Hey” I screamed as Davis sat and acted like nothing was happening

She dragged me by the hair again, this time she was headed for the garbage can when someone held her hand.

“Let go of her hair” I could recognize that deep bass voice anywhere, it was Derick.

“I said let go of her” he shouted as he snapped her hand off my hair, I had already started sobbing.

“Do not ever try to tou…” Derick was shouting when he was cut in

“Hey, hey, hey, don’t scream at her like that” Davis cut in.

Wait is Davis Garraway defending her right now, like is he defending the with right now?

“It’s a girls bant so do not raise your voice at Andera” he added

Yep he just defended her over me.

“Are you for real now bro?” Derick asked

“I’m not your Bro” Davis responded

“Fine. But keep your bitch in check” he added as he dragged me to go, I was about leaving with him but I couldn’t I immediately turned back and grabbed the remaining dirty water and I spilled it all over Davis Garraway.

“Fuck you asshole, Fuck you Davis Garraway” I concluded as I gave him the middle finger and left.

I now triple hate you Davis Garraway

  • Her Toxic Desire    Epilogue

The valley does not keep track of time the way the city does. There are no billable hours, no fiscal quarters, no frantic, calendar-driven deadlines. There is only the cycle: the ice, the thaw, the green, and the yield. It has been three years since I walked away from the mahogany-paneled offices of London, leaving behind a life that was as polished and hollow as a store-bought mannequin.I am sitting on the porch of the cabin. The wood beneath me is smooth, worn silver by the sun and the weather—a surface I have maintained with my own hands. The orchard we planted in the first year is finally bearing fruit, the trees heavy with apples that taste of nothing but rain, sunlight, and the specific, iron-rich soil of this slope.Elena is down by the creek, working with a team of neighbors on a community-managed irrigation system. They aren't fighting the developers anymore; the developers, frustrated by the valley’s stubborn refusal to accommodate their rigid designs, long ago sold their p

  • Her Toxic Desire    Chapter sixty five

The morning after the storm brought a silence so profound it felt heavy. The valley, washed clean by the deluge, shimmered under a pale, post-rain sun. The creek had retreated into its banks, though it left behind a landscape rearranged—driftwood piled against the bridge pilings, new gravel bars where the path had been, and a thick, rich layer of silt coating the garden's edge.Elena sat on the porch steps, staring at the debris-strewn creek bed where her entire life had been stored in cardboard boxes only twelve hours ago. She looked different—less like a city tourist, more like a survivor. The manicured polish was gone, replaced by the grime of the mud, and her eyes, though exhausted, had lost their frantic, darting edge.I stepped out with two mugs of coffee. I didn't offer sympathy; sympathy is a soft commodity in a place that demands hard ones. I offered the mug, sat down, and watched the water."It’s going to take a week to dig out the silt from the lower rows," I said. "And the

Spring in the valley was a relentless teacher. It didn't care for the elegance of a legal argument; it only responded to the precision of the planting. The "first green" had turned into a lush, aggressive canopy, and the cabin was now surrounded by a riot of life.I was no longer just the woman who had walked away from the firm. I was the woman who knew exactly how many days of sun it took to bring the snap peas to maturity, and how the soil composition near the eastern drainage ditch dictated the yield of our summer squash. The "geometry" of my life had shifted from the abstract to the tangible."The squash is crowding the beans," Davis said, emerging from the garden patch with a trowel in hand. His shirt was stained with chlorophyll, and his forearms were corded with muscle from months of steady work. "If we don't thin them, we’ll lose the nitrogen balance for the later crops."I stepped into the rows, my own hands mud-caked and steady. I didn't reach for a schedule or a spreadsheet

The thaw arrived not with a gentle sigh, but with a rhythmic, percussive roar. The ice on the creek, which had held the valley in a hushed grip for months, shattered in a series of sharp, resonant cracks that echoed off the ridges like small-caliber gunfire. Then came the rush—a torrent of meltwater fueled by the receding snowpack, turning the sleepy stream into a churning, slate-grey artery of life.I stepped onto the porch on the first morning the temperature stayed above freezing, and the smell hit me first. It was the scent of damp, liberated earth—an aroma so dense and fertile it felt like a physical weight in my lungs. Life, having been compressed and frozen, was now expanding with a frantic, almost violent ambition.Davis was already at the creek, testing the structural integrity of the small footbridge we had built the previous autumn. He looked up as I approached, his face mapped with the weariness of the long winter but alight with the kind of primal satisfaction that only c

  • Her Toxic Desire    Chapter sixty two

Winter did not arrive; it invaded. It came on a Tuesday, heralded by a sky the color of a bruised plum, and by sunset, the valley had been erased. The world beyond the cabin walls ceased to exist, replaced by a swirling, white void that hammered against the cedar siding with a relentless, rhythmic intensity. For the first time since my arrival, the cabin was no longer a workshop; it was a fortress. The rhythm of our life shifted. The frantic, external labor of the harvest was replaced by the internal, meticulous labor of maintenance. We mended tools, we organized the grain stores, we checked the rafters for stress, and we sat.The silence of winter was different from the silence of summer. Summer’s silence was porous, filled with the hum of insects and the rustle of leaves. Winter’s silence was absolute, a heavy, velvet weight that pressed against the windows and demanded a different kind of articulation."The fire is dying," I said, my voice sounding small in the vast, still room.Da

The victory over Sterling-Crest Developments was not marked by a victory party or a celebratory drink. In the valley, such things were not the way of the world. Instead, it was marked by the quiet, steady return of water to the lower basin. Three days after Vane’s departure, the trickle in Elias’s creek deepened into a steady, singing flow. The pasture began to green again, a subtle shift in the color palette of the hillside that only those who lived in constant conversation with the land would notice. For me, the victory brought a different kind of shift. The word had spread, with the speed of wind through dry grass, that there was a "law-woman" in the cabin near the high ridge—someone who could speak the language of the developers and turn their own jargon against them. The consequence was an immediate and overwhelming influx of "neighbors."They came in the evenings, appearing at the edge of the clearing like ghosts emerging from the trees. There was Sarah, a widow whose logging ri
