Ava’s POV

I could feel the tears brimming at the back of my eyes, threatening to drop. I knew my mother had a difficult life in the Wayland pack but I never knew the buildup to it and now, I know how it all started.

“Aunt Moria — your mother’s disappearance weighed on us for a long time and even though we reluctantly accepted that she was dead and we flushed out nearly all the Rogues in the area as retribution for her death, we didn’t quite feel fulfilled and my mother — behind everyone’s back — continued to search for her.” Lukan continued.

“She did?” I hadn’t been expecting that.

“My mother was quite stubborn and she never believed that her sister was dead until she saw a body. One fateful night 18 years ago, we got a letter from Moria that she was pregnant and she needed help to be rescued because her life was in danger and she had no one else to turn to. We were skeptical about believing the news because we’ve been subject to several pranksters trying to use her disappearance t

Ava’s POV“You'd better have a good explanation for what you just did right now.” The man said in a low warning tone as he stood up, towering over Renee and me while Lukan merely frowned. I wasn’t a short person by any chance but I felt dwarfed. He was at least seven inches taller than I was. “I’m sure that she didn’t mean to cause you any disrespect but I—we had to step in. Your cocktail was drugged, I overheard a couple of men talking about it while I was in the restroom.” I struggled to get my words right. “Are you sure about that?” He said, his voice held a lot of skepticism which infuriated me so much that I raised my head to look at him. God, he was beautiful. He was frowning but it was etched the right way on his face, his long black hair cascaded down the side of his face, partly shielding his black orbs from me. He had about a day’s growth of beard on both sides of his face giving him a rakish look. My warning bells rang out loud, telling me to steer clear of the incomin

Ava’s POV“Renee!” I yelled, my loud voice interrupting her daydreaming. “Jesus Christ, Ava! You nearly gave me a heart attack.”She let out a groan as she turned her head around to glare at me. I wore a scowl on my face as my eyes narrowed in slits. I looked like I wanted to murder someone — Renee, that is— she was the only one in the restroom with me. “I’ve been trying to get your attention for a full minute but you’ve been busy daydreaming about some wolf you probably met last night!” I yelled again, my voice rising. “There you go again.” She said. “Tell me what I said is false.” I dared her. She opened her mouth and snapped it shut. I knew that there was no way she was going to tell me what had been on her mind willingly. I turned on the tap and washed my face before examining my appearance in the mirror. I wondered if she could tell that I knew she had been crying—again. If she did, she never said anything. Her eyes were swollen and puffy, her hair was pulled up in a me

Ava’s POVLukan was conflicted about a lot of things especially when it came to women. It was pretty difficult to pin him down to one particular one at any point and I’d been hoping that I’d finally managed to narrow down his option but here he was, shocking me with a new discovery.“The waitress had developed the hots for me ever since she started working here a few months ago and while I entertained her advances and occasionally took her home for a quick one, I didn’t feel anything towards her anymore — not after what happened last night.” Lukan explained. “A few weeks ago, you were ready to take her on vacation for a week and now, the sight of her disgusts you?” I chuckled, shaking my head. “A lot can happen in a few weeks and my feelings have changed since then,” Lukan answered, bringing the glass cup to his lips. “Does this have anything to do with the pretty woman who saved your life yesterday?” I gave him a knowing smile. I could still remember how they both acted and fusse

Ava’s POV“Work?” I raised my eyebrows. It was a Friday night and according to the timetable I was rather familiar with, Lukan was meant to have closed a couple of hours ago.“I’ve got a meeting with a few Alphas and their delegation coming from another region in a couple of hours,” Lukan replied, checking his watch. I couldn’t wrap my head around how he managed to handle everything all at once without putting his health in jeopardy and crashing out. He worked harder than anyone I knew and it got scary at some point because he never took a break. “Can I ask you a question?” I asked.“Sure, you can.” He said. “You work harder than anyone else in the office,” I began. “If you barely have enough time to sleep and unwind, how do you take care of your health?” “You’re worried about me, is that it?” Lukan smiled. “If you’re not taking care of yourself, someone has to do it for you,” I replied, feeling emboldened all of a sudden. “I’ve got the best doctors money can buy, Ava. If there

Ava’s POV“Seeing as you were so adamant about wearing the dress, did it give you the desired result that you desperately wanted?” Lukan asked, trying to sound as neutral as possible. “Are you asking if it made them notice me a lot before the previous times?” I tossed my eyebrows. “Yes, that’s exactly why I asked,” Lukan confirmed. “I need to know the latest details.”"I don't know, Lukan. But I took Renee’s advice and I apologized to Jake in the office today and after talking for a while, he offered to take me out on another date, a proper one this time around.”“Jake said that himself?” Lukan raised his eyebrows. “He did, much to my surprise. And I was caught off guard.” I confirmed. “I have to admit that I was caught off guard as well,” Lukan said. “I hope you won’t be mad about what I’m about to say next, but—““But you accepted the offer and you’re going on a date with the Wayland brothers before they leave tomorrow evening.” Lukan said. I opened my mouth and snapped it shu

Ava’s POV“About?” Lukan asked as he pulled out a bottle of water from the fridge before shutting it. “Last night,” I replied. “Is there anything to talk about, Ava?” Lukan asked again. “I mean, you made your decision out loud to leave me hanging and I understood it without any complaints.”“You don’t need to sound so cold towards me, Lukan.” I sighed. “I wanted to handle the situation in the best way I thought possible and you didn’t want to give me that freedom to do so.”“I was trying to help you but it was pretty obvious that you didn’t want my help.” He said. “The words you said suggested that I might go back to them,” I frowned. “Do you know how embarrassing that must have been for me?” “To be fair, if you hadn’t left like you did, we could’ve retraced our steps if it got to you so bad.” He said. “If we had been on the same page, we wouldn’t be fighting right now, would we?” I retorted.“You acted that way and you nearly made us lose our leverage, don’t you get it?” He said
