Chapter 1

My wife, Mary Scott, took the USB drive and frowned slightly.

When she opened it, she found nothing inside but a collection of photos—just the two of us together.

She looked up at me, puzzled. "Why are you giving me this?"

I met her gaze. "Didn't our son say I sold off some kind of core technology? This is the evidence he was talking about."

In my previous life, someone had framed me—slipping classified files onto the USB drive I carried with me. But this time, the moment I was reborn, I had someone wipe it clean.

A flicker of surprise crossed Mary's face. She was just about to ask how I could hear our son's voice when the door was suddenly kicked open with a violent crash.

A man in uniform rushed in, his gun trained directly at me.

"Don't move! Hands where I can see them!"

His sharp, piercing gaze locked onto me. It was Brandon Dyer, my wife's partner and deputy.

Caught off guard, Mary turned to him in shock. "Brandon, why are you here all of a sudden? Lower your weapon first."

Her reaction didn't seem staged—she truly hadn't expected him to show up, which meant Brandon had come prepared.

"Mary, Jerry has leaked our military's core technology. He should be arrested immediately—"

I raised an eyebrow, a faint smile tugging at my lips. "Hold on. How do you know I leaked the technology?"

Then I turned to Mary, my voice sharp. "Was there already an order from headquarters to arrest me? Or are the two of you acting on your own?"

Brandon frowned, his tone turning cold. "Why are you still denying it? Isn't that USB drive the evidence?"

His eyes snapped to Mary as he urged impatiently, "Mary, the suspect is right in front of us. Are we not making the arrest?"

Expressionless, Mary tossed the USB drive to him. "Take a look yourself. There's nothing in it except photos of Jerry and me."

She pressed her lips together before adding reluctantly, "This time… the baby must have been mistaken."

Brandon stared at her in disbelief, shaking his head repeatedly. "That's impossible. How could it be wrong? The baby has never been wrong—every single time, it's been accurate."

He plugged the USB into a device, checking it over and over like a man possessed.

"There has to be something we missed."

The fact that even Brandon knew about our son's "voice" better than I, his own father, made my gaze darken.

I closed my eyes briefly, steadying myself before speaking.

"If there's nothing else, I won't disturb your work any longer."

I extended my hand toward him. "If you're done, return it."

Still unwilling to give up, Brandon searched through it several more times. Finding nothing, he finally gritted his teeth and handed the USB back to me. Then he turned and stormed out.

I gathered my things and reached for the door, about to leave, when suddenly, my son's voice rang out again.

"Bad Daddy! He must have moved the data and hidden it somewhere. Mommy, hurry and catch him for interrogation!"

My heart lurched. Cold sweat broke out across my back, but I forced myself to stay calm as I pulled the door open.

"Jerry, stop!" Mary's urgent voice called out from behind me.

I ignored her and kept walking.

"Traitor! Where do you think you're going?!"

In the next instant, Brandon came charging out of nowhere and kicked me hard, sending me stumbling back inside.

On a bright, sunlit weekend afternoon, Jane pushed me through the hospital garden in a wheelchair.By then, I was already able to walk short distances on my own.We stopped beside a long bench, and she helped me sit down carefully."The air outside feels so good," I said, taking a deep breath and savoring a long-lost sense of peace."Yeah… everything's over now." Jane turned to look at me, her eyes gentle and bright. We sat in silence for a while, enjoying the quiet. Then, as if she had finally made up her mind, she spoke softly, "Jerry, there's something I've been keeping in my heart for a long time."I had a faint sense of what was coming. My heartbeat quickened slightly as I turned to face her."Since college, I've always admired you—your integrity, your talent, your composure."A faint blush rose to her cheeks, but her gaze remained steady."Later, when I found out you and Mary were together, I… I buried those feelings deep down. I just wanted you to be happy."I listene

That same night, in my hospital room, Mary was escorted in to see me. She dropped to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably."Jerry, I was wrong… I truly didn't know… for the sake of our child…""Our child?" I leaned against the headboard, expressionless. "When you believed that so-called 'voice' and tried to kill me, did you ever think that the child would need a father too?""I… I was deceived…""Deceived?" I let out a cold laugh. "Was three years of marriage not enough for you to know what kind of person I am? Or would you rather believe an outsider?"She choked on her words, unable to respond."Do you remember what you said when we got married? That no matter what happened, you would trust me." I turned my gaze to the window. "And now?""Please… give me another chance…" She crawled forward, reaching for my hand. "For the baby's sake…"I pulled away from her touch."It's precisely for the child's sake that I can't forgive you. A mother who can be so easily misled—and who would f

Chief Monroe fell silent for a moment, then finally nodded. "All right. But it must be conducted under surveillance. We'll be monitoring the entire time."Jane pushed my wheelchair into the adjacent observation room.Through the one-way glass, I saw Mary and Brandon, each shackled to an interrogation chair.Mary's face was pale, yet her spine remained rigid and unyielding.Brandon, on the other hand, looked dark and volatile, struggling constantly against his restraints.I maneuvered my wheelchair into the interrogation room alone."Looks like you're both doing well."My voice echoed clearly.Mary snapped her head up, a flicker of complicated emotion crossing her eyes."Jerry… your injuries…""Thanks to you, I'm still alive," I cut in coldly, then turned to Brandon. "What's the matter? Didn't expect me to walk out of that basement alive?"Brandon sneered. "Traitors always have tough lives.""Traitor?" I moved closer slowly. "You mean the one who actually leaked the secrets?

After forcing myself to recuperate in the hospital for two days, I insisted on being discharged. My body still throbbed with pain, every injury screaming in protest, but time wouldn't wait.Knowing my temperament, Jane ultimately failed to dissuade me. With a reluctant sigh, she handled the temporary discharge procedures and pushed my wheelchair all the way to the Confidential Bureau. As we moved down the long corridor, I could feel eyes on me from every direction. Some were filled with concern. Others with curiosity. And more than a few carried undisguised shock and confusion.Outside the interrogation room, Chief Nicholas Monroe of the disciplinary committee approached with a grave expression. His brows drew tight as he took in my bandage-wrapped body slumped in the wheelchair."Jerry, you really shouldn't be here in your condition."I raised a hand weakly, yet with unmistakable firmness, cutting off his attempt to persuade me."I can manage." My voice was faint but resolute.

The agony and blood loss dragged me into unconsciousness before the ambulance ride was even over. It felt as though I had struggled for ages in an endless abyss of darkness before finally clawing my way back to awareness. The sharp, sterile smell of disinfectant forced its way into my nose. Above me, a white ceiling swayed in and out of focus.I tried to move, only to realize my body was tightly wrapped in thick bandages. A piercing pain shot through my knee and leg wounds. Every breath tugged at the injuries in my chest, a brutal reminder of the nightmare I had just endured."Jerry! You're awake?"A familiar voice, edged with barely concealed urgency, cut through the haze and pulled me fully back to reality. With great effort, I turned my stiff neck and saw Jane Higgins' face, drawn tight with worry. She had been my classmate in college. Now she worked in the Technical Division of the Confidential Bureau, a different department from Mary's Intelligence Operations Division. She r

Mary's boot slammed hard into my ribs. The impact knocked the breath from my lungs."You want me to violate confidentiality protocols?" she snapped. "Jerry, you've really thought this through, haven't you?"The voice from her womb immediately echoed in agreement:[Bad Daddy is awful! Mommy and Brandon, hurry and teach him a lesson!]Brandon turned to glance at Mary. At her almost imperceptible nod, he swung the electric baton down, striking my temple with brutal force.Warm blood trickled from my forehead. The metallic taste of it spread through my mouth."Confess!" Brandon's blows grew harsher, his voice twisted with excitement. "You're tarnishing Mary's reputation!"Waves of dizziness crashed over me, but I fixed my gaze on Mary."This is abuse of power—extrajudicial torture!" I spat. "You're condemning me based on the voice of an unborn child?"I spat out a mouthful of blood. It landed beside her polished boots."When the truth comes out, none of you will escape!"Mary ge
