LOGINAva’s POV
“Over here!” I ran behind her as she directed me to her room. There, I stood face to face with my worst nightmare. The nurses were spreading the blue cloth over him and the machine made just one sound. “Dad! Please don’t leave me!” I clung to his bed and had the nurses struggle to pull me away from him. “Please, Ma’am, you need to calm down,” one of the nurses tried to soothe me while pulling me away, but I didn’t flinch. I shook him, hit him hard, told him I was there and I wouldn't leave his side ever again. Still, I got no response from his stone cold body. “Let the dead man be, Ava and stop acting as though you care,” Ivana scoffed from the doorframe while Ethan stood beside her. I aimed for her neck immediately to perhaps strangle her for being so heartless and cruel with her choice of words. How could she say that to the man who has never treated her differently from me? He was her father too! Ethan came between us immediately, finally pulling us apart and saving us from each other’s claws. “You killed him in the first place so don’t act like a hypocri-” “Ivana!” Ethan raised his voice with his hands slightly above his voice. Ivana’s breath hitched while swallowing hard. She took a few steps back, leaving me puzzled as to why he'd scold her in that manner, before she stormed out of the room. I looked away the moment his attention went from enraged Ivana to me. “I'm sorry things had to happen this way, Ava.” He patted my shoulder and then he left. The calmness in his words resurrected a storm within me. I could easily blame him for everything, yet when he spoke to me like this, it was almost as if my Ethan was still around. *** It has been three days since my father’s death and guess what, Ivana hasn’t shown up since. Today was his funeral and though I had relieved the nanny of her duties, she still insisted on staying for the funeral. “I promised myself the day his health became terrible that I was going to be by his side even till his last moment and if you ask me to leave now, Mrs Ava, it would be me breaking that promise.” “Fine, then,” I lowered my voice with no strength left in me to argue. She had been faithful, and I didn't mind hiring her as well . “Mrs Ava, you are not the only one that feels guilty for not being there,” she began, making me furrow my brows in confusion. “Miss Ivana Ha called earlier asking me to pick a parcel from the company. She emphasised on how important it was, so I left. I came back as quickly as I could to meet thick black smoke. Yes, I called for help and even found out that he was locked in his room from the inside.” “How possible is that?” “I don’t know, Mrs Ava. All I know is that by the time we were able to break the door open, he was already unconscious. Whether or not somebody tried to kill him, there’s no one there to serve as an eye witness. So please, don’t feel the guilt alone.” She barely looked above my waist while she spoke and I could see her struggle to speak with the way she fumbled her fingers and stammered in between her sentences. Was she trying to say that my father was murdered in his own room? The mere thought of it was hauntingly hilarious and I just had to push it to the back of my mind to avoid losing my sanity completely. The preparation was almost done and I left with the nanny to the church for his last service. During the reception, I still noticed that Ivana was absent until I had almost given up on her showing up. “Where is the lawyer?” She took off her sunglasses to look me in the eye, wearing nothing but meanness and unconcern. “Today is our father’s funeral and you’re clearly not here for the funeral, so try checking back later,” I sighed while tucking some stray strands behind my ear. “Unfortunately, big sis,” she sent me an evil grin as though I was nothing. “You’re right. I have no interest in attending his funeral, besides you were the only thing he cared about when he was alive and I owe nothing to his death, but,” she dragged the last words. “He does owe me something,” her grin grew wider. “Did you seriously come here to create a scene?” I threw my purse to the couch, taking bold steps towards her. “Just tell me where the lawyer is,” she spat. The sound of someone clearing his throat made us look back to see Mr Albert, my father’s lawyer walking towards us. “Here you are,” she smirked. “Mr Albert,” I acknowledged his presence before swallowing hard. He held a brown envelope and signalled for us to move into my father’s library. “It is your father’s wish that this will be read on the day of his funeral and if you don’t mind, I’d like to proceed with his last wish,” he looked from me to Ivana who was now biting her bottom lip. “Yeah, you can proceed,” I said with my heart barely beating, as the content of the will would tell our future. With that he passed one of the envelopes to me before passing the larger one to Ivana. The excited look on Ivana’s face made my heart sink. Obviously, everything that was good news to her was definitely bad news for me and the fact that the situation we were in was what had to do with the will, it only made me quiver. Hopefully, my father wouldn’t make one mistake twice by showing Ivana an undeserving love again. “Ahhhh!!!” She jumped on Ethan with a wide smile spread across her lips. Just after seeing her reaction, I braced myself for the worst while finally tearing the sealed envelope open. My jaw dropped open as I began to read the content of the will. By the time I was done, my limbs gave up, earning me a brutal fall to the ground. Ethan quickly snatched the will from my hands while Ivana flung the property papers to my face. “They are all mine!”Ethan’s POVI had drowned my fury and frustration in the shower last night before slumping on my bed, still, the impact of yesterday’s discovery still lingered at daybreak. I winced when I tried to stretch on my bed which was how memories from the club made its way back to my head. I managed to do the little I could, then got out of bed to see what sort of mess I looked like now.“Not bad,” I muttered to myself, checking my face carefully for a bruise. There were just a few I could manage, so I left staring and went ahead to prepare for what I had to achieve today. There were two things that stood out perfectly from yesterday’s chaos—Layla no longer deserved the slightest interaction from me. Not just because she had helped Ivana, but because her persistence could grow into an obsession to have me by all means. She wouldn’t be different from Ivana when it happens.Secondly, I had to always keep an eye on Ava and do everything in my power to hinder Ivana’s attack from getting to her.
Ethan's POV Her words felt like a sharp dagger to my chest, and the more I tried to act fine, the more it cut deep. We made it back to the busy room where I gave her a fair amount of space. She kept drinking and dancing with random men… doing all sorts of things while sending unreadable glances at me. She had gone crazy.“You good, man? You've barely taken your eyes off her and she's… a mess,” the bartender pointed out, eyeing Layla.“Right,” I hissed, letting my gaze follow her swaying hips against the wasted man dancing with her. “We're good, though. Thanks.”I forced a smile then took the drink he poured out for me. I had barely gulped down the clear liquid before a scream erupted from her direction. The stranger had already pinned her to the counter not so far from where I sat and her struggle was futile against his grip.“Get your filthy hands off me!” She yelled. The people around her began to chatter. Soon enough, everyone began to make way for the lunatic. They took out thei
Ethan's POV “I do,” I searched her face for anything to give away what's going on in her mind, but failed miserably. She was really skilled at masking and worse, being innocent.“Great.”I waited for her to say something else, but she quickly changed the topic and that was it. We toasted to new beginnings and better endings, then with her remarkably persistent attitude, she made me laugh at some jokes. Finally, all the burden and high alertness melted into the present moment. We made our way to the club as planned and surprisingly, I wasn't as cautious as I was earlier. I let her take the lead and do whatever she wanted. It was all I could do for her anyway. “It's weird to say this, but you would be the one to drink a lot tonight if you don’t promise to stop being wary,” she teased, gesturing for two shots to be served.“Oh, really?” “Yeah, and I mean it.”“I think I should be sane enough to drive us back home because something tells me you're gonna be so wasted tonight.”It was h
Ethan's POV It's been two weeks since the pictures were destroyed and two days since James made his second biggest launch. Apparently, that was the day his reputation as well as Ava’s was supposed to crumble. It was also the two weeks since Layla acted impulsively and four days since I finally yielded to Richard's words. Everyone in my life had moved on except me. He could be right. It was time for that to change. The clicking sound of her heels against the marble floor announced her presence, before her soft voice did. “Hi, Ethan,” she waved, grinning as though my face were the sun. “How are you?” “Great!” She sang, holding up a folder. However, if it wasn't just a folder, she threw her arms open for a hug. Innocently reaching for the folder was my best shot at saving both of us the awkwardness, so I did. A small frown settled on her face, but quickly left when I stared down at the document in awe.“What did you do?”She giggled, deliberately taking steps in my direction.“Why n
Ava’s POVIt’s been a few days since that night, and also a few days that had all other workers giving me all sorts of looks like they had been there to witness how everything went. James hadn’t given so much attention to them and I decided to do just that. Nothing mattered except the immense happiness he made me feel and the fact that he felt the same.“Alright, Ava, I think it’s high time someone told you,” Cordelia lay her fork down to fully focus on me. “You’re not even scared anymore to deny what you feel for him. That is a cue to find out what is really going on with him,” she pressed further.I sighed. Her fear was understandable especially since she had really bonded that much with me. But I’d told her time and time again. James was nothing like Ethan and he wouldn’t hurt me the way Ethan did.“I think it's fine if we just move at his pace. There's no need for the rush, you see?” I wiped the corner of my mouth with a napkin in an attempt to appear as calm as possible. “A lot i
Ethan's POV Her line disconnected before I could say another word to her. Stealing one more glance in the direction where I saw Ava, I sighed and hit the accelerator. Thankfully, I brought the envelope with me so I drove directly to Layla's apartment.“Open up, Layla. It's Ethan.” I left a voice message while I was parked in my car.“Did you bring it?” Her voice was a hushed whisper when she ran towards me in the hallway “I did.”“Good. Please give it to her. I can't explain everything to you right now, but please—”“Relax, Layla. Let me handle this, okay?”I held her gaze long enough until she took a deep breath and nodded. I glanced at the door while stroking her arm lightly to reassure her before meeting her cousin.“Alright. Let's get going before she suspects something.”“Oh yeah,” I chuckled. “If you've looked this way the whole time, she must be thinking hell is about to break loose and who knows? You might be bringing the devil in with you,” I teased, making her grin.I smi
