She is called the rare gem, but when her father died, Ava inherited nothing but betrayal wrapped in hell and ice. Her step-sister, Ivana, who by character is the devil's bride, took it all. The company Ava built from dust, the legacy that bore her name, and worst, her husband. Stripped of everything, Ava vows revenge. The kind to make a man beg for death instead, and the one to make the dead yawn for judgement. However, as she claws her way back to power, secrets rise from her father’s grave. Darker than blood and deeper than betrayal she has ever known. Will she destroy the man who once vowed forever? Or will the truth behind her father’s will break her harder than any heartbreak ever could?

The door creaked open and the blood drained from my veins. Ethan was naked, slamming into not just any woman… but my step-sister. “Ethan!” My voice mimicked the sound of a high mountain crumbling down, with raging thunder backing it up. Pulling his hardened length out of her, he pushed his finger in and out of her before walking towards me with his dripping finger. He moved it towards my mouth and without thinking, my pale palm met his cheek with a force strong enough to turn his head to a whole new direction. “Happy anniversary, wife,” he chuckled at my despair while my step-sister, Ivana, only smirked in satisfaction when I held the wrap of the condom up. “You couldn’t even wait or leave our anniversary out of this, Ethan! How could you do this to me?!” I slapped his chest with blurry vision from my tears. Wasn’t Ivana supposed to be tending to our father? Wasn't he planning a surprise? Haven’t I done everything that I was supposed to do as a wife and as a woman crazily in love today and days before today? What then did I do to deserve this?! “I’ll suggest you take your filthy hands off of him,” Ivana’s cold and venomous voice stung me in my chest. “He’s my husband, how could you?” I spat, feeling like the earth should swallow her up already. She just sat on the bed with her hands dancing and slowly caressing her bare body just to tick me off. I glanced over at Ethan at least to draw some sort of sympathy out of him, but his emotions towards me were as cold as ice, void as space and flat as a mirror. “You wouldn’t dare talk to her in that tone ever again, Ava,” he sneered at me with disgust, crushing the part of my heart that's barely beating. “And I’m not your husband,” he added with an intense gaze and clenched jaw. " I’m done with you, so get lost!” Was it the hate in his eyes? The venom in my voice or the irritation that he exuded when he spoke to me? Everything made it clear that he was done? Everything made me question if it was truly the man I had grown to love. I looked over to Ivana, trying hard to hold back the tears the second time, but it hurt. It hurt so bad that I felt their betrayal literally burning my skin, leaving my veins popping out and my complexion red. “You will pay for this.” I slammed the door in their faces and ran as fast as my feet could carry towards my car. As long as I stayed within the premises, it became more difficult for me to breathe. It felt like the memory of them together drained down the air in my lungs and everything left for me to do was to run as fast I could. Driving back to the company, I decided to stay for a while until I was a bit fit to go back home as my father would be worried sick if he got to see me like this. However, Ethan was fond of creating a romantic scene at my place of work during the past wedding anniversary. Now it was going to look strange if I walked into the company again on the day of my anniversary. I stayed in my car, drowning in sorrow until there were no more tears to shed. My head ached as much as my heart did and when the noise began to fade, I smiled sadly hoping to finally get some peace. My phone rang for the second time today and my heart skipped one unlucky beat in anticipation of seeing Ethan’s call hoping that maybe, he wanted to apologise. However, it was the nanny. “I’m sorry I couldn’t make it home quite early today, I-” I was interrupted by an indistinctive whispering at first, then came a sniffing sound and finally an outburst. “W-w-what’s wrong?” I stammered, not ready for another bad news in one day. Her fears spoke louder than whatever was going on in her mind, and the cryptic message her sobs sent made the hairs on my arms stand erect. My gaze was fixed in one direction and my grip against my phone tightened. “Take it easy, okay?” I tried to soothe her across the distance. “Whatever that's happening, you have to at least try to speak,” my own words were laced with the same uncertainty a diver has before he jumps from a cliff. Seeing that she wasn't going to stop sobbing, I opted for a different approach with a fuzzy mind, but before I could ask anything, she had already spoken up. “Please, Ma’am, I need you to come quickly to the hospital,” her voice cracked. Hospital… Fear crippled my feet while my irresponsibility covered my mouth. Damn! How did I forget about my father's condition?! “I-is everything okay? Is-” I swallowed, but there was nothing to go down my throat. I emptied my bag on the seat next to me while searching for both my car key and the right words. “A-are you alone there?” “It’s your father, Ava,” her sobs continued. “Please be quick, I think you’re the only one he wants to see now.”Ava’s POV A week and a few days had passed with Peter finally leaving, and as expected, Rosalie was acting a bit weird around me. It wasn't as if I blamed her for it, I just wished she'd be happy for him because honestly, what happened to him was something to be really happy for. What used to be Peter's office was now mine, and while it came with all the comforts of working in my own space, it came with James winking or kissing my forehead each time he used the door that connected both offices. Gratefully, he wasn't a huge fan of PDA as I wasn't and that helped to conceal what was going on between us until it became official. That's if it'd ever be official.“Hey,” I greeted Rosalie carefully as I walked into her office. “Are you alright?”“I just miss him, Ava,” she surprisingly sighed, which I wouldn't lie, I never believed she'd even look at me when I walked into her office. “We meet on some evenings, but you know, having him close all the time once and having to deal with our sch
Ava's POV The moment those words left my mouth, I became very responsible for a wild side of James I didn't believe I'd ever see. At first, he took us to his room all without breaking the kiss. I took off his tie completely white he started to undo my zip.“James,” I moaned as the tip of his fingers trailed down the centre of my back. After pulling the fabric of my shoulder so that my cleavage was now fully exposed to him, he threw me to the bed. That was the only time he had parted his lips from mine so I took the opportunity to breathe. Breathe as though I'd never be given the chance to breathe again. “Ava,” he whispered as he undid the remaining buttons of his shirt. I so badly wanted to do it myself, but since letting him do it gave me the time to admire his body and the wetness of it, I sucked my index finger slowly while keeping the gaze between us firm before answering.“Yes, James.”I was crawling up to him now with no sense of shame or guilt. Jeez, it sounded so terrible, b
Ava's POV I couldn't look anywhere but my palms. As much as I'd love to pick the details of his shirt as I always did, and his new hairstyle, the one he had on on the day of the promotion, and all other things that made him look so divine, I couldn't. His eyes were all over me as if he didn't mind what I'd think of him, more like, he didn't care what I'd think of him. With that, I pretty much knew that I'd explode if my gaze met his now.“Where are we going?” I cleared my throat.“To grab your favourite cup of mojitos, then I could show you my place,” he leaned closer towards me before swallowing a lump in his throat. “That's… if you want, though.”“Of course, I'd love to,” I replied immediately, watching the uncertainties in his eyes fade instantly. “And thanks for the mojito,” I blushed, rubbing my stomach as I'd really need one at the moment. He was too excited that it kinda embarrassed him to keep his gaze glued to mine, so he turned to face the window which kinda reflected him b
Ava's POV It doesn't matter what Rosalie saw or what she believed. I made sure not to give in to her conclusions, especially when she could be very wrong about it. The tension from earlier had slowly vanished just as it usually did any time I was with her, I was laughing at her jokes and hoping that the break would linger a little bit.I barely spoke with Peter when I got back to the office again. I couldn't imagine what it must be like for him especially if Rosalie was correct about his feelings for her. Well, I just hoped that wherever he was going wouldn't stop them from seeing each other.“I'll let you know when I'm done and you can come over,” I assured Rosalie who was starting to nag me about not showing up.”I'll freshen up quickly and that way, you can also meet mum,” I tried a different bargain this time.“I'll say you and Mrs Cordelia are really cool now,” she blushed. “You calm her mum now,” she pointed out as though it was something entirely new.“She has done a lot for me
Ava's POV I waited patiently for Peter to come out so I could ask him about his meeting with James. I wouldn't usually do it, but I couldn't help the way his tone turned sharper when I spoke about Peter. I just couldn't get the tension off of me.“Hey,” he called out carefully, when I hadn't realised that he was back.“Hey,” I shot him a quick smile and a bit of a relaxing sigh. “How did it go?” I asked while trying my best not to sound nosy as I did.“Great,” he flashed me one of his very confident grins except that I saw through it this time. Something was off. “He just wanted to know about your performance and he seemed pretty impressed by it,” he assured me.“And that's the reason you look troubled?” I pulled a chair out for him to sit. “Come on, what's wrong?”“I think I have a lot to talk to Rosalie about,” he sighed.Just then, I recalled how excited she was to tell me about her and Peter when we resumed, but we never got the chance to discuss it. Damn! I felt so horrible beca
James’s POVFor the past week of watching Peter and Ava in the same office, there was no better conviction that this was a bad idea. I couldn't possibly yell at him because he couldn't keep his hands to himself, and there was no way I planned on sending him out when things with Ava… I didn't know what exactly it was. She's fine one minute and the next is history.“Mind telling me how your work experience has been?” I raised a brow while watching every angle of her body.“It's been great,” her voice beamed with satisfaction and excitement when she spoke. I couldn't help but wonder if it was because she worked with Peter or I had decided to make the workspace a bit convenient for her by taking a break. “Peter has been very helpful, and kind,” her brows furrowed from excitement as she spoke again. “He's been nothing but gentle, and he—”“That's good to hear, Ava,” I cut in, fighting the urge to roll my eyes. “Learn as much as you can because he might be leaving soon.”“Wait. What?” Her m
