LOGINAva’s POV
“No, this can’t be real…” I whispered. “Perhaps, he knew you were worthless all along,” Ivana smirked while wrapping her arms around Ethan. “There has to be some misunderstanding or mistake, but–” I swallowed my salty saliva as fresh hot tears were starting to form in my eyes. “But you’re in shock that the favourite and hardworking daughter has no inheritance from her father, right?” Ivana pouted while Ethan picked the property papers now signed into her name. First was the mansion, second was the company, and thirdly was a fifty-million-dollar cheque. I opened my mouth to speak, but nothing came out. Even my saliva felt like hot lava hard for me to swallow, and my heart started to feel like it was falling into a bottomless pit. “Now here is your last gift, Miss Ava Scott,” his tune went back to the cheating Ethan and not my darling Ethan. “I’m sure you know what to do with those papers. Be quick and return it to my mansion first thing tomorrow morning.” “Oh Ethan,” Ivana sang, drawing lines from his beards to his lips with her maroon painted nails. “I do hate her a lot, but she is my sister, and I sincerely think she’s going to die if you leave her at this point. I can lend you some time with her if you don’t mind. Besides, it’s clear who you belong to now,” she winked at him. “Why are you doing this, Ethan? I love you, and you know it. I’ve done everything possible to make you happy, and you were happy until she came into the picture–” “I’d be expecting the papers signed by tomorrow, and heaven knows, you don’t want to get on my nerves because of this.” With that, Ivana and Ethan left while I still sat in shock at what had just happened. “I’m so sorry things had to turn out this way, Ava, but you have to believe that your father is not dumb and everything he does, he does for a reason–” “Leave,” I interrupted Mr Albert. His words were like salt on an open wound and dragon breath to a fire, and I already had enough of it. He did as I said, leaving me completely alone in the room. I wasn’t sure how long I stayed in the room, but I knew that by the time the nanny, Mrs Cordelia walked in to know how I was doing, the voices from the crowd had already died down. “It’s just us,” she announced carefully, closely monitoring me. Stooping to my level, she tried to pull me into a comforting embrace. “I’m so sorry about the will, dear,” she whispered behind my cold ears. “What did I do wrong to deserve all this?” My voice was dried and void of all human emotion but hurt, brokenness as well as emptiness. “I still can’t believe that Mr Scott would do such a thing to you, let’s just keep hope alive and believe that he had a good reason for doing what he did, else, you have to stay strong and try not give in to your sister’s madness.” “I’ll try winning my husband back tomorrow not because he deserves it but because Ivana would mock my all round failure if I let her have everything without a fight,” I mumbled while getting up to leave. “Winning him back?” she jolted up behind me in shock. She obviously knew nothing about the divorce, and that was good for her. I ignored her questions and grabbed a bottle of wine before moving straight to my room. After successfully drowning myself in my pain and bottle of wine, I felt the world begin to spin. Afterwards, I crashed to the pillow and kept breathing until everything became dark. *** “Good morning, Ava,” Mrs Cordelia’s voice woke me up from my sleep. Oh, I guess it’s morning already. Ugh! Pushing the sheets to the side so that my entangled legs can be freed, I threw myself off of the bed. “Miss Ivana left a message, and she asked that you come over at night as she would be having a long day with Mr Ethan.” I dismissed her and quickly cleared my morning routine before heading out to Ethan's place. “I'm sorry, Ma'am, but Mr Ethan left with Miss Ivana not long ago to her father’s company,” one of the maids informed me after I found them missing in the mansion. “Alright, then. Thank you.” Entering the company after about thirty minutes of leaving Ethan’s mansion, the atmosphere changed, and it sincerely felt like I was no longer needed. I still walked in, ignoring all the stare, murmurs, and silent laughter intended to mock me. “Where is Mr Ethans?” I asked one of the staff after my failure at finding him. “He is with Miss Ivana, and they asked not to be disturbed,” she replied with her eyes glued to the floor. “I command you—” “You keep hurting yourself, Ava,” I heard Ivana’s voices, and the clicking sound of her heels interrupted me. I let the innocent staff go away as I was now face to face with Ivana. “Where is Ethan?!” “Ethan? I thought he made it clear to you that he wants no business with you. Why are you looking for him?” “He is my husband, and you have no business with the reason why I seek him!” “Was, Ava,” she smirked in disgust. “He was your husband. Now hand those divorce papers over and see yourself off.” “What the hell are you doing here?” Ethan's voice cut in like a sharp blade from behind. “Here you are,” I breathed, working towards him even though the look on his face screamed for me to vanish. “I came to see you, Ethan… At least to talk things out rather than to jump into a rash decision by putting our signatures on these papers.” “There is nothing to be discussed. Ivana is going to be my wife, and the last shred of respect to you would be divorcing you before marrying her, but if that is too difficult for you, I also have a solution to that.” Tears began to wail up as my father's employees began to encircle us. He walked past me to take Ivana’s hands. Going down on one knee, some of the employees began to take pictures of the scene. “Will you marry me, love?”Ethan’s POVI had drowned my fury and frustration in the shower last night before slumping on my bed, still, the impact of yesterday’s discovery still lingered at daybreak. I winced when I tried to stretch on my bed which was how memories from the club made its way back to my head. I managed to do the little I could, then got out of bed to see what sort of mess I looked like now.“Not bad,” I muttered to myself, checking my face carefully for a bruise. There were just a few I could manage, so I left staring and went ahead to prepare for what I had to achieve today. There were two things that stood out perfectly from yesterday’s chaos—Layla no longer deserved the slightest interaction from me. Not just because she had helped Ivana, but because her persistence could grow into an obsession to have me by all means. She wouldn’t be different from Ivana when it happens.Secondly, I had to always keep an eye on Ava and do everything in my power to hinder Ivana’s attack from getting to her.
Ethan's POV Her words felt like a sharp dagger to my chest, and the more I tried to act fine, the more it cut deep. We made it back to the busy room where I gave her a fair amount of space. She kept drinking and dancing with random men… doing all sorts of things while sending unreadable glances at me. She had gone crazy.“You good, man? You've barely taken your eyes off her and she's… a mess,” the bartender pointed out, eyeing Layla.“Right,” I hissed, letting my gaze follow her swaying hips against the wasted man dancing with her. “We're good, though. Thanks.”I forced a smile then took the drink he poured out for me. I had barely gulped down the clear liquid before a scream erupted from her direction. The stranger had already pinned her to the counter not so far from where I sat and her struggle was futile against his grip.“Get your filthy hands off me!” She yelled. The people around her began to chatter. Soon enough, everyone began to make way for the lunatic. They took out thei
Ethan's POV “I do,” I searched her face for anything to give away what's going on in her mind, but failed miserably. She was really skilled at masking and worse, being innocent.“Great.”I waited for her to say something else, but she quickly changed the topic and that was it. We toasted to new beginnings and better endings, then with her remarkably persistent attitude, she made me laugh at some jokes. Finally, all the burden and high alertness melted into the present moment. We made our way to the club as planned and surprisingly, I wasn't as cautious as I was earlier. I let her take the lead and do whatever she wanted. It was all I could do for her anyway. “It's weird to say this, but you would be the one to drink a lot tonight if you don’t promise to stop being wary,” she teased, gesturing for two shots to be served.“Oh, really?” “Yeah, and I mean it.”“I think I should be sane enough to drive us back home because something tells me you're gonna be so wasted tonight.”It was h
Ethan's POV It's been two weeks since the pictures were destroyed and two days since James made his second biggest launch. Apparently, that was the day his reputation as well as Ava’s was supposed to crumble. It was also the two weeks since Layla acted impulsively and four days since I finally yielded to Richard's words. Everyone in my life had moved on except me. He could be right. It was time for that to change. The clicking sound of her heels against the marble floor announced her presence, before her soft voice did. “Hi, Ethan,” she waved, grinning as though my face were the sun. “How are you?” “Great!” She sang, holding up a folder. However, if it wasn't just a folder, she threw her arms open for a hug. Innocently reaching for the folder was my best shot at saving both of us the awkwardness, so I did. A small frown settled on her face, but quickly left when I stared down at the document in awe.“What did you do?”She giggled, deliberately taking steps in my direction.“Why n
Ava’s POVIt’s been a few days since that night, and also a few days that had all other workers giving me all sorts of looks like they had been there to witness how everything went. James hadn’t given so much attention to them and I decided to do just that. Nothing mattered except the immense happiness he made me feel and the fact that he felt the same.“Alright, Ava, I think it’s high time someone told you,” Cordelia lay her fork down to fully focus on me. “You’re not even scared anymore to deny what you feel for him. That is a cue to find out what is really going on with him,” she pressed further.I sighed. Her fear was understandable especially since she had really bonded that much with me. But I’d told her time and time again. James was nothing like Ethan and he wouldn’t hurt me the way Ethan did.“I think it's fine if we just move at his pace. There's no need for the rush, you see?” I wiped the corner of my mouth with a napkin in an attempt to appear as calm as possible. “A lot i
Ethan's POV Her line disconnected before I could say another word to her. Stealing one more glance in the direction where I saw Ava, I sighed and hit the accelerator. Thankfully, I brought the envelope with me so I drove directly to Layla's apartment.“Open up, Layla. It's Ethan.” I left a voice message while I was parked in my car.“Did you bring it?” Her voice was a hushed whisper when she ran towards me in the hallway “I did.”“Good. Please give it to her. I can't explain everything to you right now, but please—”“Relax, Layla. Let me handle this, okay?”I held her gaze long enough until she took a deep breath and nodded. I glanced at the door while stroking her arm lightly to reassure her before meeting her cousin.“Alright. Let's get going before she suspects something.”“Oh yeah,” I chuckled. “If you've looked this way the whole time, she must be thinking hell is about to break loose and who knows? You might be bringing the devil in with you,” I teased, making her grin.I smi
