LOGINAzure's POV
Rolling my neck, I stepped into the lab, seeing all of my scientists working diligently on our newest product.
“Mr. Blackwood,” one of our oldest employees, Douglas, smiles, handing me a white lab coat. “Are you here to test out the new gear?”
I nodded with a smile, “Won’t know if it’s effective if I don’t.”
He chuckles nervously, “It still baffles me that you choose to be your own product tester.”
I shrug, a sly smirk spreading on my lips, “It still baffles me that more CEO’s aren’t. Is the facility ready for me?”
“Always,” Douglas presses a finger against the keypad, and it illuminates green, allowing us entry. Along the walls are prototypes for my newest bullet-proof compression shirts.
I came up with a design that would be comfortable for combat, as well as light and flexible for the average soldier. But more importantly, it’s designed to eliminate the effects of silver bullets.
“Have we tested the material on larger guns?”
“Nothing above thirty-nine millimeters, sir,” I placed my finger against the next keypad, watching as it flashed green, and then unlocking a small door. Inside sat the very first finalized design for our new line called Azure.
Finnick, my cofounder and best friend, called me a arrogant fool for naming our newest product after myself, but I’ll be damned if the world doesn’t know the name of the man who will save countless lives.
I stripped out of my suit jacket and button down, quickly pulling the flexible material over my body. It hugged me like a second skin without feeling as though I was being smothered.
“Start with a forty-five today.”
Douglas’s eyes grew wide, “Sir, that’s not been tested yet.”
“Then make sure you take notes,” I gave him my back as I pressed my finger against another scanner. “My job is to find limits and create something that goes beyond them.”
The testing area door slid open, and I stepped inside, stretching as the machines whirled to life. Finnick created an arena type setting for me to test our product.
Various robots were set up throughout the arena, able to move just as humans would. They were equipped with turrets that shot various bullet sizes, and obstacles that mirrored what you might encounter out in the real world.
It was a marvelous creation.
“Testing begins in three minutes,” Douglas’s voice called out through an intercom system.
‘You certainly love taking risks, Azure,’ Nero snickers in my head.
‘And you don’t?’ I snort, knowing damn well we’re on the same page.
Nero and I run a tight ship. Here at Blackwood INC as well as back in our pack. As the Alpha of Blackwood, one of the largest wolf packs on the West coast, we have to.
Nearly two thousand members rely on us to ensure that our kind is safe, and without the bond that we share, that simply wouldn’t be possible.
“Fifteen seconds sir,” a female voice comes through the line.
‘Sure you don’t want to back out,’ Nero challenges, but he knows better.
I’d rather be shot through the gut by a forty-five mm bullet than accept defeat.
‘You sound scared.’
‘You seem to have forgotten who I am,’ Nero pushes to the forefront of my mind, sharing my consciousness.
The robots begin moving, and we dash towards the simulated forest.
A bullet whizzes by my face, smashing into a tree with a loud, splintering sound.
“Az,” Finnick’s voice crackles through the arena. “I need to speak with you.”
“Not now,” I shout, irritated by the interruption, and sprinting away from one of the robots chasing me.
“It’s important,” he sounds annoyed, which is typical. As my Beta, he’s used to my personality. He also knows when I’m in here, he’s supposed to leave me the hell alone.
“I’m not sure if you have gone blind since this morning, but,” I roll, smacking my shoulder into a tree to avoid another shot. “But I’m testing a product which means you should be off doing something more important than bothering me.”
“The clinic called,” he hissed through the speaker, and my body froze.
Did the most recent implant work?
A bullet spun through the air, and I watched it in slow motion, spiraling until it smacked into my chest. My body flew back ten feet, skidding across the ground.
Heavy breaths caused my chest to heave, and I glanced down, a wicked grin spreading on my face.
The shirt wasn’t even torn.
‘Our sternum is cracked, you asshat,’ Nero snarled, but I was too busy gleaming. The pain didn’t even register as I climbed back onto my feet, running towards the initial impact. Sitting on the ground was a crushed bullet.
Picking it up, I rubbed my fingers over the silver, ignoring the burning of my skin.
“We did it,” I held up the bullet, knowing that every scientist working for me was watching this display. “We fucking did it.”
Using the back of my hand, I swiped the sweat from my hairline, heading back into the prep room.
Finnick was standing there with his arms over his chest, “You are an agitating human.”
I tossed the bullet towards him, watching his face scrunch up with pain when he caught it, “Another failure?” I peeled the prototype from my body, hanging it up for inspection before stepping over to the mirror and taking in the damage on my chest.
My black hair was a mess, and dried blood clung to my forehead. A single drip had managed to almost pass my eyebrow, getting into my eyes.
Nero was slacking.
The gray color appeared lighter when I was excited, and right now, I am on top of the fucking world.
Bright purple bloomed over the center of my chest, with almost black right over where the bone sat beneath the skin.
I can barely feel it now. By tomorrow, you wouldn’t even be able to tell I’d been shot.
“You could call it that,” he chewed his bottom lip.
“Spit it out,” I snarled, growing impatient.
“There was a mix-up with your sperm,” Finnick stared at my chest with wide eyes. “Seems that your baby juice was mixed with some random chick’s egg. They want you to go down to the clinic and deal with the legalities.”
“Why does it matter?” I buttoned up my shirt. “Every attempt prior to now has failed with the screened donors. What makes this one different?”
Nero perked up at the thought of having a pup. I was turning thirty this year, and the pack was breathing down my neck to produce an heir for Blackwood. I was already eight by the time my father turned thirty, yet I have only just begun to consider the idea of a pup through a surrogate.
But without a mate, and no desire to take in a chosen one, I’d resorted to a screened surrogate, much to the dismay of my family.
“She’s human.”
Shit.
Finn's POVAzure’s lips slammed against mine. There was no coordination and a clear disregard for gentleness despite my current state. The taste of artisan coffee exploded in my mouth as his tongue forced its way between my lips and tears burned my eyes.He still tastes the same. My body deflates with a whimper as Az pulls away, pressing his forehead against mine, “I’m so fucking pissed at you right now, but Goddess, Finn,” he closes his eyes, shaking his head softly. My heart stammers in my chest when our eyes lock, “I’m a fool for ever thinking I could live without this. I was… drowning in an endless sea of what ifs.”“Did any of those what ifs happen to involve me surviving?” I arched a brow, trying and failing to fight off amusement. This relaxed state I’m in feels foreign… I’m not sure that I like it.Az pulls away, his brows knitted in confusion before his upper lip curls, “No. That’s not what ‘what ifs’ are for, and you know damn well once the mind hops on the anxiety rollerco
Finn's POVI chuckled softly before realizing exactly what Azure just said.My cheeks flame as the doctor grows even more rigid than before… something I didn’t know was possible.Erin’s head slowly twisted towards Az, her eyes a mixture of shock and amusement.“You and Enzo…” Az mutters. “Gonna kill you both.”“Are you done with your tantrum?” I sigh, sinking back into the mattress. My body might be weaker than ever before, not that I’m surprised.I knew from the moment Enzo fell what had happened.Farrah was the lowest of the low.It took me until that very moment to realize exactly what she was doing, except she didn’t think through one thing; I wouldn’t give Azure up, even in death. She can try to the ends of the Earth to sever our bond, but our bond has always been deeper than that of the Goddess, and even without Nash; I’d still love him.Same with Erin. I realized over the years of watching her from afar, that there was nothing I wouldn’t do to make her mine. Bond or not, she wa
Erin's POVFinn’s body grew blurry just beyond the glass. My legs felt weak… Nash… We’d barely spent time together. I knew so little about Finn’s counterpart; My mate… And now I might lose the chance.Goodness, I feel stupid…. My lids screw together, and I can’t fight the tears that slide down my face. None of that matters when Finn is the one losing a part of his soul.“I don’t care how much it costs, find a microbiologist and whatever doctor is necessary and get them here for a perfect antidote,” Az grits out, but it lacks bite. His resolve is crumbling by the moment, and for the second time in the last few minutes, guilt swims through my veins.“Of course,” the doctor stammered.Reaching up, I swipe the dampness from my face and take a deep breath before turning towards Azure, “He’s going to be okay,” I forced a smile, but it feels plastic, and Az knows it.“I know, sweetheart,” his hand wraps around mine, tugging me against his chest and pressing a kiss to the top of my head, “Fin
Azure's POV“Marianne?” I choke on the name, watching her graying hair swing with the swivel of her head. Finn’s green eyes stare back at me and it damn near rips the air from my lungs.“Oh Azure, sweetheart,” she rushes over, enveloping me in a warm hug. Guilt gnaws on my already twisted stomach when she pulls away, a tearful smile on her face, “How is our boy?”I was a grade A piece of shit.Our. Boy.I’ve avoided this woman like a plague since everything happened…. And never once has she treated me any differently. Not even after I was a shit kid who had been fed from the vile tongue of my mother. I spewed the hatred I’d been fed, and she never faltered.“I’ve been banished to the hallway after nearly snapping the doctor’s neck,” I tried to flash a guilty smile, but it fell quickly.Enzo shouldn’t have fucking left me here to deal with this shit alone. I heard Finn scream out in pain, and when I saw the doctor hovering over him with a syringe in his hand…. Let’s just say he ~almost
Erin's POVThe sound of flesh tearing and explosions continued to rattle the packhouse just beyond the boarded-up windows and doors. Over the last twenty minutes, the sounds have grown louder…. Sharper, and no matter how much I keep busy, my mind is restless.Twenty minutes was too long.Maybe… Just maybe a part of me was being selfish. The people that I cared most about were somewhere fighting a battle I knew nothing about, and despite knowing that it was safer for me here, I couldn’t stand it.“They’ve never targeted us like this before,” Colt snarled, his back pushing against a board that was clearly being attacked from the outside.“It doesn’t make sense,” Sienna was rushing back and forth with the children, and I felt frozen. I’d offered my help, but the churning in my gut and pain in my chest was making it hard to focus. Every time I looked for something to do, my anxiety had my eyes swinging back to the door, where Colt was holding off the rogue on the other side.“Doesn’t matt
Wow. I cannot believe that almost an entire month has gone by. First, I'd like to apologize for my silence. At some point, no matter what was going on, I should have hopped on here and at least given an explanation. For the last few weeks, I stepped away from writing entirely, not even touching my laptop. I won't go into too much detail, but a lot of things happened in rapid succession in my life that needed a lot of attention, and I just couldn't give my stories the time and effort they deserved. My brain felt like a scrambled egg, and writing just wasn't happening. On top of that, part of me felt burnt out. I've been writing these stories for almost six years now nonstop. Millions of words across a dozen stories with very few breaks between each. I don't know how some people do it. I will try to be more transparent moving forward. I cannot promise perfect consistency, but I will give it my best shot. As always, I appreciate all of you. If you've stuck around and plan to continue rea
Erin's POVEnzo has been as restless as I feel, and it’s left me feeling helpless.I’m not sure how much time has passed since Finn went to Azure, leaving me here with a clearly injured Enzo. His breathing has evened out some over the last twenty minutes, but that wheeze with every breath makes me
Erin's POVFinn’s fingers slide up and down my arms, leaving a trail of tiny sparks beneath my skin, “What’s your favorite food?”“You’re not allowed to judge me for it if I tell you,” Finn was fighting a smile.“Is it something you should be judged for?” my brows raised.“Probably,” he snorted. “A
Azure's POVThe closed door of my bedroom looms at the end of the hallway, and I can’t bring myself to go inside. Being back here reminds me of my failures, and without Finn; I’m not distracted enough to ignore them.“Soooo, dad,” Enzo grins, leaning against the doorway.“Don’t start with that shit
Erin's POVI followed Finn inside, but he bypassed the couch for the kitchen.Hopping onto the counter, I watched as he rummaged through the cabinets, pulling out two mugs before spinning around, “Hot chocolate?”A deep moan vibrated through my body, “Yes, please.” He chuckled, pulling out all of
