The phone in Charlie’s hand let out a long buzzing sound. The call had disconnected.

“Damn it!”

Charlie hurled the slim device against the wall until it shattered into pieces. His breathing turned ragged. For the first time in his life, he felt as insignificant as an ant. He was being ignored. He had been blocked by the woman who once used to tremble in fear at nothing more than the sound of his disappointed sigh.

The office door burst open harshly. Sarah walked in with a swollen face and red eyes.

“Charlie, what are you doing?!” Sarah shrieked, her voice piercing. “You yelled at me in front of everyone! You defended that bitch?!”

Charlie did not turn around. He kept his back facing Sarah, staring at his own reflection in the dark glass window.

“Go home, Sarah. I’m tired.”

“No! I won’t!” Sarah wrapped her arms around Charlie’s back from behind, clutching his suit tightly. “That child... that child must be the result of Elena’s affair before she left! She’s trying to trap you again, Charlie! You have to believe me!”

The moment Charlie heard the word trap, his memories were thrown back to the night five years ago. The night he had thrown the divorce papers into Elena’s face because he believed she had sabotaged Sarah’s car brakes and left her paralyzed.

But tonight, he had seen Elena standing tall before him.

And he had also seen Sarah—the woman who claimed she could only walk again because of a medical miracle—running into his office without the slightest defect.

Something was wrong.

The guilt that had bound Charlie to Sarah all these years suddenly felt like chains tightening around his own neck.

Charlie turned around and forcefully removed Sarah’s embrace, though his movements remained cold and restrained. His eyes locked directly onto his wife’s.

“Were you really paralyzed back then, Sarah?” Charlie asked. His voice was dangerously low, trembling with the suspicion he had buried deep inside for the past five years.

Sarah’s face instantly turned pale.

“C-Charlie... what do you mean? Are you doubting me?”

“Go home,” Charlie cut her off firmly.

Sarah’s presence suddenly made him feel sick.

The next morning, the main conference room of Vane Corp was wrapped in suffocating tension. Every member of the board sat there with cold sweat covering their backs. At the end of the long table, the CEO chair belonging to Aethel Corp remained empty.

Exactly at nine o’clock, the doors opened.

Elena stepped inside wearing an ivory-white power suit. Every step she took was firm and intimidating. Behind her, Aria carried a stack of black documents.

Charlie immediately straightened his posture. His eyes never left Elena’s face. Dark circles were visible beneath his eyes, proof that he had not slept even for a single minute last night.

Elena sat down in her seat without even sparing Charlie a glance. She looked directly at the board members instead.

“Let’s begin,” Elena said coldly.

“Mrs. Elena,” one of the senior directors cleared his throat, “regarding yesterday’s unilateral cancellation of the logistics partnership—”

“I didn’t come here to negotiate logistics,” Elena interrupted sharply.

She snapped her fingers, and Aria immediately distributed new documents in front of everyone, including Charlie.

“I came to exercise my rights as the new controlling shareholder of your subsidiary company.”

Charlie opened the document. His eyes widened as he read the rows of numbers printed there. Aethel Corp had secretly purchased all of Vane Logistics’ bond debt from foreign banks.

“You want to destroy my company?” Charlie’s hoarse voice broke the silence.

Elena finally turned to look directly into Charlie’s dark eyes.

There was no hatred there.

Only emptiness.

And somehow, that emptiness hurt far more than anger ever could.

“This is just business, Mr. Vane,” Elena replied calmly. “The weak are eliminated. You taught me that five years ago.”

Charlie’s chest throbbed painfully.

He remembered how he used to slash Elena’s monthly allowance or leave her starving in the mansion whenever she made even the smallest mistake.

Now those same words had turned against him.

“The meeting is over. Mr. Vane, I need your signature for this asset transfer immediately,” Elena said as she rose from her chair.

The directors hurriedly left the room in panic, leaving only Charlie and Elena behind in the vast conference hall.

Charlie stood up and walked toward Elena until only a breath separated them. The elegant scent of rose perfume lingered around her body, replacing the cheap jasmine fragrance she used to wear when she was still his wife.

“Elena, for God’s sake, that child...” Charlie gripped the edge of the table tightly, restraining himself from touching the woman before him. “He’s my son, isn’t he? Why are you punishing me by hiding him from me?!”

Elena adjusted her white blazer before lifting her chin slightly, a faint sneer curving on her lips.

“He’s not your son, Charlie,” Elena hissed softly, her voice low but razor-sharp. “The child you once called a murderer died beneath the rain five years ago. The boy you saw yesterday is Leo. He only has one parent.”

“I’m his father! You can’t erase my blood from his body!” Charlie shouted, his eyes reddening.

Elena took one step closer, making Charlie freeze in place. She whispered directly in front of his face.

“Then where was that father when I was coughing blood onto your bedroom floor, Charlie? Where was that father when his precious little sister tried to kill my baby?”

Elena stopped there.

Before Charlie could respond, she had already turned around and walked away, leaving the man trapped inside a storm of panic and regret that was beginning to consume what remained of his sanity.

Elena’s footsteps echoed firmly along the corridors of Vane Corp. She kept walking straight ahead, unwilling to let the remnants of her confrontation with Charlie destroy the calm she had spent five years rebuilding.Only after the VIP elevator began descending did her defenses finally waver slightly. Elena leaned against the glass wall, gently clutching the fabric of her ivory-white suit. Her own words still left a bitter taste in her throat.Where was that man when Sarah tried to kill my baby?“Madam, are you alright? You look pale,” Aria asked worriedly.Elena closed her eyes for a moment, taking a deep breath before looking back at Aria with a cold expression. “I’m fine. Make sure the legal team completes the transfer of Vane Logistics’ assets before lunchtime. Don’t give Charlie any room to breathe.”“Yes, Madam. And... what about Leo?” Aria lowered her voice. “The guards reported that a suspicious car has been watching the hotel daycare.”Elena’s jaw tightened instantly. Her gre

A suffocating silence engulfed the hotel ballroom the moment the VIP room doors shut tightly behind them. Charlie stood frozen in place, his breathing ragged and uneven. The little boy’s face kept replaying in his mind—the sharp jawline and the shape of those eyes were a perfect reflection of himself as a child.“Charlie...” Sarah’s trembling hand reached for the sleeve of his suit. “That can’t possibly be your child. Elena is setting you up on purpose. She—”“Shut up, Sarah!”Charlie harshly slapped her hand away. This was the first time in five years he had ever yelled at Sarah in public. A flush of humiliation and anger crept up her neck as she noticed several members of the business elite whispering while watching them closely.Without sparing his wife another glance, Charlie turned around and strode toward his private transit room upstairs. His chest felt painfully tight under the crushing weight of reality. Five years. Elena had carried and given birth to his child all alone som

The night train pulled away from Capital Station. Inside the noisy economy carriage, Elena sat leaning against the fogged window. Her arms wrapped protectively around her stomach, holding onto the only reason she had survived.“Forgive me,” she whispered softly. “We have to start over.”Beyond the glass, her eyes fixed on the glowing Vane Corp logo standing arrogantly atop the tallest building in Capital City. Elena slowly closed her eyes, making a silent promise to herself that one day, she would be the one to extinguish that glory.Five years later. In City-B, a harsh port city, the name Elena Victoria was no longer unfamiliar. She was the founder of Aethel Corp, a pharmaceutical company that now dominated the domestic market. The woman who had once been cast out without a single penny had returned as someone cold, powerful, and deeply respected.Tonight, the grand ballroom of a five-star hotel in downtown Capital City was filled with business elites. Aethel Corp was holding a major

Heavy rain poured through the night, soaking Elena’s thin dress until it clung tightly to her trembling body. Yet the cold biting her skin was nothing compared to the frost that had long since frozen her heart.Elena kept walking, leaving behind the elite district where the Vane family mansion stood. For five years, she had called that place home, yet not once had she ever been treated like a human being there.Inside the small cloth bag clutched against her chest were only a few worn-out clothes and a pregnancy test showing two unmistakable red lines. She was pregnant.Elena tightened her grip on the bag. The tears she had desperately held back in front of Charlie finally fell together with the rain. Why did this child have to come into her life when her entire world had already crumbled into ruins?“Do you really think I would ever want a child from a murderer?”Charlie’s cruel words from a year ago echoed once again in her mind, spoken during a family dinner where he had humiliated

A dark blue document folder was thrown onto the glass table in front of Elena.“Sign it,” Charlie ordered flatly, his voice devoid of emotion. “Sarah has returned. She’s fully recovered now, and I won’t let her keep hiding just because she’s afraid of you.”Elena stared at the bold word Divorce printed across the top of the papers. Her chest instantly tightened with unbearable pain. For five years of marriage, Elena had survived in hell. She endured every insult, was branded as the monster who ruined her own sister’s life, and was forced to serve Charlie while he constantly looked at her with disgust. She swallowed all that pain for one foolish hope: that someday Charlie would finally see her as Elena, not merely Sarah’s shadow. But today, that hope died completely—trampled beneath the feet of the same man she once risked her life to save from an icy lake many years ago.Slowly, Elena lifted her head, refusing to shed another tear in front of this man.“You never even asked me once, C
