SERA

I wasn't prepared for this. Especially not the sight of Rue curled up beside Rafael like they'd known each other forever. And certainly not the way her small hand pressed a damp cloth to Killian's forehead as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

All I felt was an overwhelming ache growing in my chest.

"Hi," Rue had said when she saw me.

It was all I needed to lose every bit of oxygen in my lungs.

I crouched down beside her, watching the way her lashes fluttered with every shallow breath Killian took. The girl was his. Anyone could see it in the shape of her eyes and that furrow of her brow when she was focused.

I reached out before I could think better of it, brushing her soft cheek with my fingers. "You helped him?"

She nodded like she'd just saved a kingdom. "I'm a doctor now."

A shaky laugh slipped from me before I could catch it.

I didn't even notice I was crying until I blinked and the tears streaked down my cheeks.

Killian groaned then, his body curling sligh

  • His Bride By Force   146: Bloody Spawn Pt. II

SERA Killian stared at his son calmly. But somehow, even that felt like the calm before the storm."Angel," he said softly, without looking away from Gio. His voice was soft but terrifying."Remind me. What happens to a man who steals another Don's mistress and then has the audacity to get her pregnant?"The girl whimpered. Gio, the cocky little idiot, only smirked wider."Relax, Dad. She's not a mistress anymore. She's mine."Killian blinked. His jaw flexed. Then, without warning, he hurled his teacup against the wall."Yours?" he roared. "Are you out of your goddamn mind, Giovanni?! Do you have a death wish?!""Dad—""Don't you 'Dad' me!" Killian snapped. "I have survived assassins, attacks, coups, and betrayals—and this... this is what's going to bury me? My idiot son and his unborn bastard?!""Killian!" I grabbed his arm before he could launch something more dangerous at Gio's head. His muscles were taut under my grip, shaking with rage.Meanwhile, Gio lazily leaned against t

SERA My husband was seated on the kitchen counter, his lips twitching as I strapped the pressure cuff on his arm."You know," I muttered, pressing the button, "most men your age sit in rocking chairs and yell at pigeons. Not dodge assassination attempts and stress-test their wives' sanity."Killian smirked, his head tilting towards me. "Maybe I like keeping you on your toes, Angel.""Mhm. Keep it up and you'll be keeping me in widow's black."He chuckled, unbothered, which made me want to smack him. Because on the counter beside him sat two letters: one as red as spilled blood, Rue's first real threat, and another from a Don who apparently didn't appreciate Gio's latest hobby.I picked up the second letter, waving it at him. "Our son kidnapped a Don's mistress."Killian's mouth curved into a grin, the kind that was equal parts amused and exasperated. "He's resourceful.""Resourceful? Killian, he stole a man's girlfriend.""Mistress," he corrected, as if that made it better.I gave

ADRIAN I stared at the envelope taped to the door, my fingers itching to rip it off and crush it, but somehow I held myself back. I'd seen these before. Too many times.I tore it open. The message was cold and deadly."Unfortunately, you are on a hit list. Someone paid to kill you. You can't escape, but we will give you the chance to sort things out with your family. This deal cannot be reversed."I froze when my gaze skimmed over the lower part of the letter. My stomach twisted. It wasn't my name. It was hers.Rue.My blood pounded in my ears, every nerve ending on fire. Someone had put her on a hit list. My girl. Someone wanted her dead. And I... I could feel the rage stirring inside me like a living thing.I swallowed hard, forcing my voice to stay steady, though I knew I sounded insane. "Rue..." I growled, not taking my eyes off the envelope. She leaned closer, her hands brushing against my arm. "Adrian... what is it?"I glanced at her. She was so achingly beautiful. I want

RUE My stomach dropped. "Dad—"The gunshot echoed through the air, the sound paralyzing me.But Adrian had moved first. He was fast, reckless, and stupid. He shoved my father down, only to jerk back with a strangled hiss as the bullet tore into his arm."Adrian!" My heart stopped cold.He staggered, clutching his arm, crimson already seeping through his sleeve. Not fatal. Not fatal. Not—oh God."You absolute idiot!" I was on him in seconds, grabbing his wrist and pressing my hand hard against the wound. His blood stained my fingers in no time. "What the hell were you thinking?"He clenched his jaw, his teeth bared in pain, but his damn smirk still tried to fight through. "Thinking..." He winced, his eyes squeezing shut for a second. "...that I'd rather take a bullet than see you cry over your old man."I wanted to slap him and kiss him in the same breath. My throat burned. "You're bleeding out in a parking lot, and you're still running your mouth?""Yeah," he muttered, his breathi

RUE I stacked the last of the ammo boxes on the counter, tapping my gloved fingers against the wood. The smell of gun oil and powder hung thick in the air, and I tried not to inhale too deeply. The smell gives me a headache."Yep. That's the last shipment for today," I muttered, scribbling numbers in the ledger. My phone buzzed in my pocket, making me jolt. One glance at the screen, and I knew it wasn't just a work text.Trouble: Ruin... Can you not distract me?I rolled my eyes, trying not to grin. Who's distracting whom?Seriously, who texts like that during normal business hours? Oh, right. Adrian. The man whose identity revolved around chaos.Quickly I sent him a reply.'Trouble. Not now. I'm in an important meeting. Can't be distracted by thoughts of your smirk or whatever disaster you're plotting.'He responded nearly immediately.'Mhm. But that's exactly what I want. Your mind on me. Always on me.'I snorted. "Always on you," I muttered under my breath. As if.I wiped my ha

  • His Bride By Force   141: Untouchable And Undone

ADRIAN The gates of the Cross property loomed just ahead while Rue and I sat in the car. I should've been focusing on what awaited me inside, but Rue's fingers were in my hair, fussing over me."You're not nervous, are you?" She murmured, tugging at my collar as if the tiniest wrinkle mattered. She seemed to be even more nervous than I was."I'm alright, Rue," I said."Did you even take your meds today?" she demanded.I caught her wrist, smirking. "You made me take them, remember?"She blinked, then she huffed softly, clearly ready to argue more. But then she changed her mind. I couldn't take my eyes off her.She was stitching me back together with the simplest gestures.Fuck me, she didn't even know. She had to be my soulmate. No one else could get under my skin like this. No one else could make me feel both untouchable and undone."Rue," I breathed, before pulling her against me. She fit perfectly, the curve of her face tucking into my neck. My arms wrapped around her, caging
