The Threat

Bella didn’t sleep much.

She burrowed beneath the comforter, looking into the blackness of the room as the same tormenting pictures flashed through her mind: the sound of Dave Stark’s voice, his eyes, and the sensation of having him in the room, which once surrounded her like a promise.

Now, the bodily feeling of being separated from him seemed to be like a progressive twist in her chest.

This pain was worse than when he had left for royal duties.

Back then, distance had softened the ache. Now, she saw him every day. Close enough to touch. Far enough to hurt.

By morning, exhaustion clung to her bones. She woke late, hair tangled, emotions raw. When Eve offered her a ride to school, Bella refused with a forced smile. She needed to move. She needed the burn in her muscles, the freedom of speed.

Running in her hybrid form calmed the storm.

When Bella finally appeared in the classroom, the whole class looked up in surprise at her flushed face and labored breathing.

  • His Broken Vow   Eyes that Dare, Hearts that Bleed

This was an unexpected summons.Acting Principal Appleberry called all the students and faculty to gather at the grand hallway for the brief announcement, the tone of which was preceded by the sharp chime that resonated throughout the corridors of Mystic Academy.“Attention! Attention!” the principal called out.Bella had plans to disappear. As she started to head towards the hallway, Eve and Joy grabbed her, one on each arm, to pull her towards the center of the hallway."Oh no, you don't," Eve muttered. "If we're standing through this, so are you."Bella sighed inwardly. Chairs hadn’t even been arranged. This was meant to be quick—but quick gatherings at Mystic Academy were never truly quick. They stood shoulder to shoulder among the crowd, bodies packed close, tension humming through the air.And then Bella felt it.That familiar, dangerous pull. Her gaze strayed unwillingly to the entrance, where Hybrids were standing apart from all others, predators mocking their prey.Dave Stark

  • His Broken Vow   Where She Chose to Stand

Her fists clenched around the container of juice as if it was the only thing that was holding her in place, Bella sat perfectly still after the ring of the bell signifying the start of lunch.“You should probably go out there and sit with them," Joy said quietly. It had always been Joy who had acted as the mediator between the three of them, tempering her words and delivering them gently. “People are starting to look," she said.Bella did not raise her head. “I won't leave you.”"Just that. She would never leave us to go and sit with the hybrids," Eve shrugged and scoffed."I didn't mean that," Joy stopped. "It's just that you're one of them now, Bella."Bella suddenly raised her head. "No, I'm not."Joy winced slightly. “You are. Maybe not in your heart, but everyone can feel it. Your presence—it’s different. Stronger. Intimidating.”Bella blinked. “I intimidate you?”“No—no,” Joy rushed to clarify. “Not like that. It’s just… the aura. All Hybrids have it. And now you do too. “Becaus

  • His Broken Vow   Want and Wound

Bella had no idea the pain could be so loud, yet so silent inside the chest. The self-control she had managed to keep throughout the day finally crumbled when she threw herself onto her bed.Her body was racked with sobs, hard and fast, drenching the pillow. The same vicious thought kept racing through her brain, burning her chest and hurting her throat.Dave had chosen Serena. That was how it felt. Not logically—emotion was rarely logical—but viscerally. Instinctively. Like a wound that recognized itself.Serena had always been there. Before Bella. During his absences. In the Palace. In his past. And worse—she hadn’t just been a friend. She had been a lover once. A fact that now felt like salt pressed deliberately into an open cut.Only hours ago, Bella had woken wrapped in Dave’s arms, floating somewhere between dream and reality, heart full and foolishly certain. Now she felt hollowed out, scraped raw from the inside. She cried until her eyes burned. Her mother, Linda, knocked gent

  • His Broken Vow   Fault Lines

Lunch was usually loud—voices overlapping, laughter spilling, trays clattering—but the moment Bella took her seat at the Hybrids’ table, an unnatural stillness crept in.Joy and Eve sat beside her, shoulders tense, eyes alert. This was the first time they’d joined the table while Serena was present.Bella felt it immediately.A longtime friend of Dave’s, Serena, sat across from them with impeccable posture and a chin that was ever so slightly uplifted. Her gaze evaluated Alice and Nova in a way that was in no way accidental. It was not quite hostile. This was an appraisal. Much like calculating the weight of prey.Bella looked away and forced herself to breathe steadily.“You're only imagining things,” she told herself. “Not everyone is out to hurt you.”Dave's caring hand slid into hers. Soft and loving, with every appearance of intimacy, he leaned in towards her, moved her hair aside, and nuzzled his lips into the side of her neck. Bella automatically relaxed and turned her head to

  • His Broken Vow   Heightened Desire

Seeing Agnes leaning over Marcus at the other end of the cafeteria made Bella roll her eyes.Others inhaled attention rather than just receiving it.With a thud, Bella sat down beside her friends and slid her tray forward as if the world could not possibly interrupt her."That was disturbing and impressive at the same time," Eve muttered as she picked at her food. "Mostly unsettling."“Just pretend they don't exist,” Joy leaned in and whispered. “They thrive on reactions.”Across the table, Morgan caught Bella’s gaze and gave her a rueful smile—an unspoken you survived. She returned it, grateful for the quiet support.School passed without incident, which felt like a small miracle. No public confrontations. No territorial growls from Marcus. No whispered rumors drifting too close.Bella arrived at the conclusion that she enjoyed quiet days.By the time nighttime approached, she was huddled up in her bed, staring fixedly at the ceiling with her phone relaxed in her grasp.Maybe tonight
