The elevator doors closed on the woman who looked like Elena's mother.

Elena lunged forward.

"Wait!"

Adrian caught her around the waist before she could reach the closing doors.

"Don't!"

"Let me go!"

The doors sealed shut.

Elena twisted in his arms, furious.

"That was my mother!"

"I know."

"Then let me go!"

"I will."

He released her immediately.

She turned toward the elevator panel and pressed the button repeatedly.

Nothing.

The display above the doors changed.

B2.

Then—

B3.

Adrian stared at it.

"There is no B3."

Elena looked at him.

"What?"

"There are only two basement levels."

Isabella stepped closer.

"Then where is it going?"

Nobody answered.

The elevator continued descending.

B4.

Elena's blood ran cold.

"That's impossible."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Not anymore."

He turned toward the archive.

"Seal this floor."

Isabella nodded.

"What are you going to do?"

"Find the elevator controls."

Elena grabbed his arm.

"I'm coming."

"No."

She glared at him.

"You don't get to tell me where I can go."

"Elena—"

"That woman called my name."

Her voice shook.

"You heard her."

"I did."

"Then I'm going."

Adrian held her gaze for several seconds.

Finally, he nodded.

"Stay beside me."

"Not behind you."

His mouth tightened.

"Fine."

Isabella sighed.

"Both of you are impossible."

---

They reached the maintenance corridor behind the archive.

Adrian opened a concealed panel.

Behind it was a network of cables and security equipment.

Elena stared.

"You knew this was here?"

"No."

"Then how did you open it?"

"I designed the security system."

"That's basically knowing."

"Not everything."

He traced a cable.

"Someone added this."

Isabella leaned closer.

"When?"

Adrian checked the installation markings.

"Recently."

"How recently?"

"Within the last month."

Elena looked at him.

"Someone built a hidden floor underneath your company."

Adrian nodded.

"And they used your security credentials."

"Yes."

"Could they have accessed your private systems?"

"Potentially."

"Could they have accessed the archive?"

"Yes."

Elena's stomach tightened.

"Then they could have planted everything we've found."

Adrian looked at her.

"That's what worries me."

She frowned.

"You mean the evidence might be fake."

"Some of it."

"Then what do we actually know?"

Adrian's gaze settled on her.

"That someone wants us to believe several different versions of the same story."

Isabella crossed her arms.

"Which means they're controlling what we discover."

Elena looked toward the elevator.

"Except my mother."

Silence.

"That woman wasn't part of a file," Elena continued. "She was real."

Adrian nodded.

"Unless someone has a reason to make us believe she is."

Elena's eyes narrowed.

"You still think she's a trap."

"I think she's dangerous."

"For me?"

"For everyone."

---

The hidden elevator stopped.

Adrian found the override.

He entered a sequence.

The screen flashed.

ACCESS DENIED.

He tried another.

Nothing.

Isabella shook her head.

"Maybe the system requires biometric access."

Adrian looked at Elena.

"Why would it recognize her?"

"I don't know."

Elena stepped toward the panel.

"Let me try."

Adrian frowned.

"Elena—"

She placed her palm against the scanner.

Nothing happened.

Then the screen flickered.

A thin green line appeared.

IDENTITY RECOGNIZED.

Nobody moved.

Elena slowly withdrew her hand.

Adrian stared at the screen.

"That's impossible."

The elevator doors opened.

Beyond them was a corridor.

Not concrete.

Not industrial.

It looked almost like a private residence.

Dark wood walls.

Soft lighting.

Expensive carpet.

Paintings.

Family photographs.

Elena stepped inside.

"This is beneath your company?"

Adrian followed.

"No."

He looked around.

"This is beneath something else."

They walked forward.

Elena stopped at the first photograph.

Her breath caught.

It showed Claire.

Pregnant.

Standing beside Samuel Cross.

And beside them—

Richard Vale.

But the photograph wasn't from 2008.

The date printed beneath it was:

1995.

Elena's birth year.

She stared.

"My mother was pregnant with me."

Adrian moved beside her.

"So was my father."

Elena turned.

"What?"

He pointed.

Richard's hand rested on Claire's shoulder.

Samuel stood beside them.

And all three were smiling.

Almost like family.

But something else was written beneath the photograph.

THE FIRST GENERATION.

Elena's skin prickled.

"First generation of what?"

They continued.

More photographs appeared.

Claire and Richard.

Samuel and Richard.

Adrian's mother.

Elena's mother.

Then Elena herself.

A childhood photograph.

She was five years old.

Standing outside a school.

The photograph had been taken from across the street.

She recognized the school.

She remembered that day.

She had been waiting for her father.

But he never came.

Someone had been watching her.

For years.

Elena's voice became faint.

"How long have they been following me?"

Adrian studied the photograph.

"At least twenty-five years."

She turned sharply.

"Twenty-five?"

"Someone started recording your life before you could walk."

Elena looked at the photographs surrounding them.

Her childhood.

Her school.

Her first newspaper article.

Her graduation.

Her first investigation.

Everything.

"Why?"

Adrian didn't answer.

Then Elena saw a door.

A brass plaque was fixed to it.

PROJECT ELENA.

She stared.

"No."

Adrian reached for the handle.

"Wait."

Elena grabbed his wrist.

"This is about me."

"I know."

"Then I open it."

He looked at her.

"Together."

She nodded.

Adrian turned the handle.

The door opened.

Inside was a small room.

One desk.

One chair.

One computer.

And a wall covered in photographs.

At the center was Elena.

Around her were photographs of every person she had ever been close to.

Friends.

Colleagues.

Teachers.

Neighbors.

Even people she had interviewed.

Elena felt sick.

"Someone mapped my entire life."

Adrian walked toward the computer.

A file was open.

PROJECT ELENA — PHASE IV.

He clicked.

A video appeared.

The screen showed Claire.

She was sitting in a dark room.

Older than the last recording.

Her eyes were tired.

But she was unmistakably alive.

Elena stepped closer.

"Mom."

Claire looked directly into the camera.

"If Elena is watching this, then the protection has failed."

Elena's heart sank.

Claire continued.

"I need you to listen carefully."

She leaned closer.

"Do not trust Adrian."

Elena glanced at him.

Adrian remained still.

Claire's expression changed.

"Not because he is the enemy."

Elena frowned.

"Because he doesn't know what he carries."

Adrian's face tightened.

"What does that mean?"

The recording continued.

"Richard and Samuel believed they could protect Elena by hiding the truth."

Claire shook her head.

"They were wrong."

A pause.

"Elena is not merely a protected child."

The screen flickered.

"She is the key to the Covenant."

Elena stared.

"No."

Claire continued.

"Her bloodline, her inheritance, and the original agreement are connected."

Adrian looked at Elena.

"What inheritance?"

"I don't know."

Claire's voice became softer.

"And when the time comes, the Covenant will come looking for her."

Elena's hands trembled.

"Why?"

Claire looked directly into the camera.

"Because your father never told you what he left behind."

The video ended.

Elena stood motionless.

Then the computer screen displayed a new message.

PHASE V INITIATED.

A countdown appeared.

29:59:59

Adrian stared.

"Twenty-nine days."

Elena looked at him.

"Until what?"

The screen changed.

A single sentence appeared.

UNTIL ELENA REMEMBERS.

---

They left the hidden room in silence.

Isabella was waiting in the corridor.

"What did you find?"

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

Elena looked at her.

"Everything."

Isabella's expression tightened.

"Then you found it."

"Found what?"

"The reason Father was afraid of you."

Elena stared.

"What?"

Isabella swallowed.

"He didn't protect you because you were his friend's daughter."

She looked toward the hidden room.

"He protected you because of what your father left inside the Covenant."

Elena shook her head.

"This makes no sense."

"I know."

"Everyone keeps saying that."

Isabella stepped closer.

"But there's something else."

"What?"

"Your father left a message for you."

Elena's heartbeat accelerated.

"Where?"

Isabella pointed toward the end of the corridor.

"At the old Cross residence."

Elena froze.

"My childhood home?"

"Yes."

"I thought it was sold."

"It was."

"To whom?"

Isabella's eyes moved toward Adrian.

"Vale Holdings."

Elena stared at him.

"You bought my house?"

Adrian's expression became guarded.

"Years ago."

"Why?"

"Because your mother asked me to."

The anger in Elena's chest ignited.

"You're telling me you've owned my childhood home this entire time?"

"I never went there."

"You never told me."

"You never asked."

"How could I ask about something I didn't know?"

Adrian stepped closer.

"I was protecting it."

"You keep calling everything protection."

His voice softened.

"Because sometimes it was."

Elena looked away.

Her emotions were becoming too tangled.

Anger.

Fear.

Confusion.

And something else.

Something she didn't want.

Trust.

She hated that she was beginning to trust him.

Because every time she did, another secret appeared.

---

They returned to the mansion before dawn.

Isabella left shortly afterward.

Elena remained in the library.

Adrian entered carrying two cups of coffee.

He placed one beside her.

"You're not sleeping."

"Neither are you."

"No."

She looked at him.

"Why did my mother trust you?"

"I don't know."

"Why do I?"

Adrian went still.

Elena hadn't intended to say it aloud.

But there it was.

The truth.

She trusted him.

Not completely.

Not blindly.

But enough.

His eyes softened.

"You shouldn't."

"I know."

He moved closer.

"Then don't."

She looked up.

"What?"

"Don't trust me because you feel something."

Her heart skipped.

"I don't—"

"You do."

He wasn't arrogant.

He was simply certain.

Elena stood.

"So what if I do?"

Silence.

Adrian's gaze remained on hers.

The space between them felt painfully small.

"Then that's dangerous," he whispered.

"Why?"

"Because I feel it too."

Her breath caught.

He stepped closer.

Still not touching her.

Giving her the choice.

Elena could hear his breathing.

Could feel the warmth between them.

For once, there were no files.

No Covenant.

No dead parents.

No lies.

Just two people standing too close.

Elena whispered:

"Adrian..."

He stopped.

"Tell me to leave."

She didn't.

Instead, she closed the distance herself.

Their lips met.

It wasn't gentle.

It wasn't careless either.

It was the collision of everything they'd been refusing to acknowledge—fear, anger, attraction, grief, and the strange trust growing beneath all of it.

Adrian's hand settled carefully at her waist.

Elena gripped his shirt.

For one suspended moment, the world disappeared.

Then he pulled back.

Their foreheads touched.

"This is a mistake," he whispered.

"Probably."

"We're surrounded by secrets."

"I know."

"Your mother warned you about me."

"I know."

"And you still kissed me."

Elena looked into his eyes.

"Yes."

He almost smiled.

Then his phone rang.

Adrian ignored it.

It rang again.

He answered.

"Yes?"

A man's voice came through.

Adrian's expression changed instantly.

"Where?"

A pause.

"How long?"

Another pause.

"Don't touch anything."

He ended the call.

Elena watched him.

"What happened?"

Adrian looked at her.

"Someone broke into the old Cross residence."

Her stomach dropped.

"What did they take?"

"Nothing."

"Then what did they do?"

His face was grim.

"They left something."

"What?"

Adrian turned his phone toward her.

A photograph appeared.

It showed Elena's childhood bedroom.

Taken from inside.

On the bed was a single envelope.

Written across it in black ink:

FOR ELENA.

Below it was another sentence.

YOUR FATHER ISN'T DEAD.

Elena stopped breathing.

Adrian looked at her.

And then the phone received one final message.

HE'S BEEN WAITING FOR YOU.

The laughter came again. Soft. Childlike. Wrong. Elena's entire body went rigid. Adrian immediately raised his weapon. “Stay behind me.” Elena barely heard him. The laughter wasn't coming from the corridor. It was coming from inside the walls. Matthew stared into the darkness. “No…” Claire grabbed his arm. “What is it?” Matthew didn't answer. His face had lost all color. Then the emergency lights returned. A single red bulb flickered above them. The projector was still running. But the image had changed. There was no longer a photograph. There was a video. A little girl sat alone in a white room. She couldn't have been more than six years old. Elena stared. The girl looked familiar. Too familiar.
