ELENA

Something was different about Adrian the next day, and I couldn’t quite name what it was.

He was quieter at lunch, distracted in a way that felt different from his usual careful, guarded silence.

‘Did he get into an argument with his mum?’

He seemed pretty defensive when it came to dealing with his mum. Later at the courtyard, I reached out for his hand, and he took it. Only for him to let go after a while.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

“Fine,” he said. “Tired.”

Something about the excuse di

  • His Dark Secret    THE STREAM

ELENAAt Elena's house I told myself I didn’t miss him. I’d told myself that a dozen times since last night, lying awake staring at my ceiling, replaying the parking lot conversation until the words lost all meaning. I care about you more than I know what to do with. It shouldn’t have stuck with me the way it had. None of this was supposed to stick. This was fake, remember. A convenient arrangement to protect my scholarship, nothing more, no matter how much my chest ached every time I thought about him.Am I actually falling for him?The question surfaced before I could stop it, and I hated how quickly I dismissed it, how fast the denial came. Impossible and ridiculous. He was hiding something enormous from me, something that scared him enough to keep dodging every real conversation we tried to have, and here I was, aching over him like some lovesick fool in a book.My aunt’s music blared through the thin wall separating our rooms, some old, tinny pop song turned up far louder than

  • His Dark Secret    THE COUNCIL

ADRIANOutside the Lauret’s mansion. The car ride to the council’s estate always felt longer than it actually was.I sat with my phone loosely in one hand, thumb hovering over Elena's contact without actually opening the message. Half a dozen half-written texts sat unsent in my drafts, each one worse than the last, every attempt at bridging the distance between us sounding either too desperate or too hollow once I read it back.I want to explain everything, but I couldn’t. What if she gets scared of me or betrays me? I locked the screen instead, tucking the phone away, though my mind stayed exactly where it had been all morning. It unsettled me, how restless I had become over someone I barely spoke to outside the walls of a school hallway. We weren't the kind of couple who talked for hours on the phone, who filled silences with a hundred unnecessary messages the way Elizabeth and her friends seemed to. Most days, our entire conversation lived inside those few stolen minutes between

Later at the courtyard, I reached out for his hand, and he took it. Only for him to let go after a while.“Are you okay?” I asked.“Fine,” he said. “Tired.”Something about the excuse didn’t sit right, same as most of his excuses lately, though I couldn’t have said exactly why.I let it go. I was getting good at that, apparently. Letting things go.Chloe found me by my locker before last period, which should have been warning enough on its own.“Elena.” She said my name like she was testing how it tasted. “How was dinner at the Lauret house? I heard it didn’t exactly go well.”I stiffened. “How would you know anything about that?”“It might be a big campus, yet small. People ta

  • His Dark Secret    THE SUMMONS

ADRIANMy room hadn’t changed a bit in years. Its dark wood floors, a fireplace that burned low even when I didn’t need the warmth, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the back gardens, and a bed large enough to feel excessive for someone who rarely slept in it properly anymore. Everything in it felt so old, deliberate, chosen decades ago and left untouched since, the way most things in this house were.I hadn’t summoned anyone to it in a long time. The soft and family knock came just past midnight. I didn’t need to guess who it was.“Come in,” I said.Chloe stepped inside like she had been waiting for that exact invitation for longer than she’d ever admit. She wore deep crimson, silk that moved with her instead of against her, her dark hair loose around her shoulders instead of the tight, bun style she wore at school. She looked different like this. Older, somehow, or maybe just more herself, stripped of whatever performance she put on for Blackthorn’s hallways.“It’s been a while

  • His Dark Secret    WHAT I AM

ADRIAN“You certainly cannot keep doing this.”My mother’s voice could cut through the study like a blade. It was low and controlled, which was somehow worse than if she had shouted. Rose never raised her voice because she didn’t need to.“Doing what, exactly?” I asked, though I already knew.“Bringing that girl closer. Answering for her at my own table. Lying to my face about a grandmother that doesn’t exist.” She set down the glass in her hand with deliberate precision, like she was holding herself back from throwing it instead. “You are not being careful, Adrian.”“I am being careful.”“You are being reckless and calling it careful.” She stepped closer, eyes sharp in a way that used to make me feel like a child again, no matter how many decades passed. “Do you understand what happens if she finds out what we are? Not just to her. To all of us.”“She’s not going to find out.”“She is already looking.” Rose’s jaw tightened. “I saw it at that dinner. She’s smart, Adrian. Smarter than

  • His Dark Secret    THE DINNER

ELENAAdrian’s house didn’t look like a house one bit. It looked more like something built to be photographed with all sharp stone edges and windows too tall for any normal room behind them, set so far back from the road that the gate alone took almost a full minute to drive past.“You grew up here?” I asked, staring up at it through the car window.“Something like that,” Adrian said.“Here we go again. It’s a yes or no.”“Well, it’s neither.”He was quieter than usual on the drive over, with one hand tapping lightly against his knee, and I decided not to push. Not yet. I’d save that for after, when I had more than nerves to work with.Inside, the house was cold in a strange way. Everything gleamed, polished to a shine that made me so nervous to touch anything, and portraits lined the hallway in gold frames, faces I didn’t recognize staring down at me as they could literally see me.“This way,” Adrian said, guiding me toward a set of double doors.I paused at one particular painting, a
