CHAPTER 3

RAFAEL

I wiped the blood off my hands with a white handkerchief as I stared at the body slumped on the floor of my office. The man had stopped breathing three minutes ago. I folded the handkerchief neatly and placed it on the table before picking up my phone.

It rang twice before I answered.

“Rafael,” Dante’s voice came through, calm but firm. “Come to my study. Now.”

I glanced at the dead man one last time before replying.

“I’ll be there in five minutes.”

I ended the call and turned to the two guards stationed outside my office. They were already pale. One of them was visibly shaking.

“Clean this up,” I said coldly. “Make sure nothing is left behind.”

They both nodded quickly, too afraid to even speak.

I adjusted my cufflinks and walked out.

When I reached Dante’s study, I didn’t bother knocking. I pushed the door open and stepped inside. Dante was standing by the window with his hands behind his back. He turned when he heard me enter.

“Rafael,” he said. “Thank you for coming.”

I didn’t sit. I simply stood there and looked at him.

“You called me away from important work,” I said “I hope this is worth my time.”

Dante didn’t react to my tone. He never did.

“It is,” he said. “Cassian was attacked last night. Someone tried to kill him.”

I already knew this. I had ordered it myself. But I kept my face blank.

“And?” I asked.

Dante looked directly at me. “We need someone to guard him. Full-time protection. I want you to do it.”

For a moment, I simply stared at him.

Then I let out a short, cold laugh.

“You want me,” I said slowly, “the Head of Intelligence, to guard a boy?”

Dante’s expression didn’t change.

“Yes.”

I tilted my head slightly, studying him.

“Have I done something to offend you, Your Majesty?” I asked. “Because this feels like a punishment.”

“It’s not a punishment,” Dante replied. “It’s necessary. Cassian is family to us. After what happened, we can’t take any chances. And I only trust you with this.”

I was quiet for a few seconds.

Internally, I was already calculating.

This was not part of my original plan. I had only wanted to create chaos by attacking the boy. I never expected him to survive. And I certainly never expected the kings to assign me as his personal guard.

But now that the opportunity was in front of me…

I could use this.

If I stayed close to Cassian, it would be much easier to monitor him. And if needed, I could finish what I started without raising too much suspicion.

I kept my face cold as I looked at Dante.

“You’re reducing me to a babysitter,” I said.

Dante’s voice was firm. “I’m asking you because you’re the only one I trust to keep him alive. This boy means something to us. Nothing must happen to him.”

I stayed silent for a moment longer, pretending to think.

Then I gave a small, arrogant nod.

“Fine,” I said. “I’ll do it.”

Dante nodded. “When Cassian wakes up, introduce yourself to him. He should know who’s protecting him.”

I didn’t reply. I simply turned and walked out of the study.

Hours later, I arrived at the hospital.

I walked into Cassian’s room and saw Percival standing beside the bed. Cassian was still unconscious. There was a bandage on his arm.

Percival looked up when I entered.

“Rafael,” he greeted.

I gave him a short nod and nothing more.

Just then, Cassian groaned softly and shifted on the bed. I turned and walked out of the room without a word.

Outside in the hallway, Varynia and the others were waiting. They all looked anxious.

“He’s awake,” I said flatly.

The moment the words left my mouth, they all rushed inside the room. Even the kings moved quickly.

Only one person stayed behind.

Little Elias.

He looked up at me with a bright smile and suddenly ran forward, wrapping his small arms around my leg.

I looked down at him with clear distaste.

I reached down and used one finger to pry him off my leg like he was some kind of insect.

“You shouldn’t be hugging me, Your Highness,” I said coldly.

Elias only laughed like I had told him a joke and ran inside the room after the others.

I stood there for a moment, listening.

Inside the room, I could hear Cassian’s voice. He sounded weak but he was laughing.

“I’m fine, really,” he was saying. “It’s just a small scratch. I want to be discharged already. I hate hospitals.”

I heard Varynia’s worried voice next.

“You were shot, Cassian. You’re not going anywhere until the doctor says so.”

Then I heard the kings telling him he’ll have a bodyguard and Cassian complain again.

I didn’t stay to hear more.

I turned and left the hospital.

Later that night, I stood outside Cassian’s room in the castle.

I had waited a few hours before coming. I didn’t want to deal with the entire family hovering around him.

I raised my hand and knocked on the door twice.

There was a short pause before I heard movement inside.

The door opened.

Cassian stood in front of me. He looked a little pale and his arm was still bandaged, but he was standing on his own.

I looked him up and down slowly, taking in his appearance without any expression on my face.

Then I spoke.

“I’m Rafael Vitali,” I said, my voice calm and cold. “Your new… bodyguard.”

CHAPTER 112CASSIAN He kissed the corner of my mouth, then my cheek, before turning his attention to my neck. I tipped my head back against the wall, giving him room, and closed my eyes when his lips found the sensitive spot beneath my jaw."You're leaving marks," I reminded him."That's the point.""You're unbelievable.""You knew that before you got involved with me.""Unfortunately."He lifted his head to look at me, and I grinned at him. His expression changed immediately."What's so funny?""You.""Careful, Cassian.""Or what?"He answered by kissing me again, and whatever I might have said disappeared. I held on to him while he carried me down the hall, his steps steady despite my weight and my complete refusal to make the journey easy for him. When we reached the bedroom, he set me on the bed long enough to retrieve the shopping bag he'd brought in with us. I pushed myself up on my elbows and watched him pull out the things we'd bought earlier. The lubricant came first, follow

CASSIAN I took out my phone while she calculated the total, briefly checking my messages. Maya had sent me two texts asking whether I'd eaten and one asking if I was still looking at the comments. I ignored the last one and replied that I was out shopping, then put my phone away just as the stylist turned the tablet toward me.I reached for my card, but Rafael caught my hand before I could tap it against the reader."What are you doing?" I asked. He moved my hand away from the machine and took out a black card from his wallet. I'd never seen it before, and I was fairly certain I would've remembered a card that looked like it belonged to someone who bought buildings for fun.He placed it on the reader. The machine approved the payment almost immediately.I stood there with my own card still between my fingers, staring at him while the stylist continued arranging the bags as if nothing unusual had happened."Since when do you have that?"Rafael put his wallet away. "Since before I met

CHAPTER 111CASSIANI found Rafael in the study a little after eleven, sitting behind his desk with his laptop shut and a glass of water beside his hand. I was still in my sweats and his shirt, with my hair looking like I'd spent the night fighting my pillow and losing. My lip hurt whenever I moved it too much, and I'd already made the mistake of checking the comments under the clip three times that morning. If I did it a fourth time, Maya would somehow sense it from across the city and call to remind me that I was supposed to be resting.I leaned against the doorframe and pointed at him. "Get dressed. We're going out."Rafael looked up from the glass. "Where?""Shopping.""Shopping for what?""Clothes. Shoes. Jewelry. Perfume. Whatever else I find interesting while we're there." I walked into the room and pulled out the chair opposite his desk, sitting down before he could ask me another question. "I'm bored, you're underdressed, and if I stay in this house much longer, I'm going to

CHAPTER 110RAFAELThe elder line rang at half past nine, while Cassian was in the shower and the kitchen still smelled like the coffee I hadn't finished. I took it in the study and shut the door. I already knew the voice. I didn't sit."You've been difficult to reach," he said."You've been difficult to miss.""Don't be clever. Phase two was supposed to move this month. We sent instructions. You didn't answer them. The council notes stopped. The men we placed for you stopped hearing from you. Explain it.""There's nothing to explain. I'm done."He was quiet long enough that I heard someone else shift on his end of the line. "Done with what.""The plan. The vote. The seat. I'm not progressing it, and I'm not going to. You can take my name off the list.""You don't take your name off a list we built. You were raised for this. We pulled you out of that house, we trained you, we kept the line alive when the palace said it was dead. You don't get to decide the work is finished because Ame

  • His Deadly Obsession   CHAPTER 109

CHAPTER 109RAFAELI tried Dante first, because he answers even when he doesn't want to. It was late morning in the house and Cassian was still upstairs with the ice pack and his phone facedown, so I took the call in the study and shut the door. The line rang out. I tried Lucien next. Same result. Kade's number went to a recorded message that wasn't his. I stood at the desk with the phone in my hand and didn't call again right away, because three misses in a row isn't a coincidence and calling a fourth time from the same device would only confirm I was looking.I waited an hour. I made coffee. I checked the locks. I answered Maya's text about the legal note with a time, nothing else. Then I used the second phone, the one that doesn't sit on Cassian's counter, and sent the short encrypted note I use when I need a body in a room and not a conversation. Dante's channel returned a receipt and nothing after it. Lucien's returned a line that said the council was in session and to route rout

  • His Deadly Obsession   CHAPTER 108

CHAPTER 108CASSIANThe shower had taken the last of the ice-pack cold out of my face, and by the time I shut the water off I was restless in a way that had nothing to do with the leaked clip or Maya’s emails. My lip was still tender if I pressed it. The rest of me was fine. I dried off, opened the drawer under the sink, and found the garter belt I’d bought on a dare from Sofia and never actually worn. Black. Thin straps. Ridiculous on a man who’d spent the morning bleeding on a studio floor. I put it on anyway, adjusted the bands high on my thighs, and walked out of the bathroom still damp and already hard.Rafael was on the bed with the laptop open. He looked up, stopped, and made a sound that came from somewhere low in his chest.“Cassian.”“Hi.”He closed the laptop without looking at it and set it on the nightstand. His eyes stayed on the straps, then on my cock, then on my face. “Come here.”I crossed the room and went to my knees between his legs before he had to ask twice. He
