I went back the next morning because the documents were still in the house and I refused to leave even that piece of myself behind.

The sun was already high, the kind of bright, indifferent light that made everything look clean. My body still carried the night—thighs sore, the faint ache between my legs a private reminder of how hard he had taken me against the glass, how thoroughly he had filled me until I forgot every name but the ones I refused to speak. I could still feel the ghost of his mouth on my throat, the bruises already blooming under my collar where he had bitten down while I came. Every step up the front walk pulled at those places. I welcomed the sting. It kept me sharp.

Gabriel’s car was in the driveway. Of course it was. Hannah’s little silver one sat right beside it, parked at the careless angle she always used when she thought no one was watching. I unlocked the door with the key I had not yet thrown away and stepped into the same vanilla-scented quiet that had swallowed three years of my life.

He was in the kitchen, shirt open at the collar, making coffee like nothing in the world had shifted. When he saw me he smiled the soft, practiced smile that used to make my chest warm.

“There you are,” he said, crossing the floor in three easy strides. His hands settled on my waist, familiar and proprietary. “I was starting to worry. Late night?”

I let him kiss the corner of my mouth. I tasted toothpaste and the faint metallic edge of last night’s whiskey that still lingered on my own tongue. My body remembered a different mouth, rougher, hungrier. The contrast made something cold and clear settle behind my ribs.

“Couldn’t sleep,” I answered, voice even. The same calm register I had used for every quiet evening, every late dinner, every night I waited while he was already inside my sister. “I needed air.”

He rubbed my back in slow circles. “You work too hard even when you’re not working. Sit. I’ll make you eggs.”

I stepped out of his hands and went to the small desk in the corner of the living room where I kept the folder of papers that still carried my old signature—contracts, account numbers, the thin paper trail of the woman I had been before I became someone else’s good wife. Gabriel watched me for a moment, then returned to the stove, humming under his breath. The sound was almost domestic. Almost kind.

My phone buzzed on the counter.

Hannah:

Lunch today? Miss your face. Usual place at one?

I stared at the screen long enough for the words to blur. Then I typed back with the same careful fingers that had once braided her hair.

Phyna:

Can’t today. Rain check?

The reply came instantly.

Hannah:

Of course, baby. Love you.

Love you.

I set the phone down and opened the folder. The papers felt thin and important under my hands. Bank statements. The deed to the small office space I had once leased before I signed it away. The contact list of people who used to take my calls. I slipped everything into my bag without hurry. Gabriel plated the eggs and set them on the table like an offering.

“Come eat,” he said. “You look pale.”

I sat. I picked up the fork. I put food in my mouth and chewed while he talked about a client meeting, about the weather, about how Hannah had dropped by earlier to return a book she borrowed. The lie sat between us, ordinary as salt. I watched the way his mouth moved around the words and remembered the exact pitch of her moan when he told her to say whose cock it was. The memory arrived sharp and unwanted: the wet sound of him driving into her, the way her thighs had trembled, the soft, secret smile she gave him afterward. My stomach turned once, but I kept eating. The eggs tasted like nothing.

He reached across the table and brushed a crumb from the corner of my lip with his thumb. The gesture was tender. It made my skin crawl.

“I missed you last night,” he said quietly. “The bed felt too big.”

I met his eyes. Three years of practice kept my face soft. “I missed you too.”

The words left my mouth without sticking. Inside, something colder than anger was already taking shape—clean, precise, patient. I thought of the stranger’s hands on my hips, the way he had held me open against the city lights and fucked every apology out of me. I thought of the bruises he had left, still tender under my clothes. I thought of how easily Gabriel believed the version of me that smiled and stayed.

When breakfast was finished I carried my plate to the sink and rinsed it. Gabriel came up behind me, arms sliding around my waist, chin resting on my shoulder the way he had done a thousand mornings. His breath was warm against my neck. The same neck that still carried the faint imprint of another man’s teeth.

“Stay home today,” he murmured. “We can do nothing. Just us.”

I turned in his arms and let him hold me for exactly as long as it took to look convincing. Then I stepped back, smoothed his collar, and gave him the same gentle smile I had perfected over three years of careful silence.

“I have a few things to take care of,” I said. “I’ll be back later.”

He nodded, already distracted by a text on his own phone. I picked up my bag, the weight of the documents solid and real against my hip, and walked to the door. Hannah’s car was still in the driveway. I passed it without slowing.

Outside, the morning air smelled of cut grass and distant rain. I slid into my own car, closed the door, and sat for a moment with both hands on the wheel. My body still ached in the places the stranger had claimed. Between my thighs I was still faintly swollen, still carrying the memory of how completely he had filled me. The contrast between that raw, honest heat and the soft performance I had just delivered made my pulse steady and loud.

I started the engine.

I did not know yet how far I would go, or how loudly I would make them hear it. I only knew that the calm voice I had used for three years was still available to me, and that I would use it now for something sharper than survival.

Somewhere in the city a man whose name I still did not know had left marks on my skin that felt more true than any promise spoken in that house. I touched the faint bruise at the base of my throat once, lightly, and felt the first real spark of something that was no longer grief.

It was planning.

And it had already begun.

  • His Desire MY Weapon    chapter 5. the check up

I woke to the grey light of early morning and the solid heat of his body still curved around mine. Alexander’s arm was heavy across my waist, his breath steady against the back of my neck. Between my thighs I was tender and sticky with everything he had poured into me the night before. The ache felt earned. Necessary. My phone lit up on the nightstand with the address.I slipped out from under his arm without waking him, dressed in yesterday’s clothes, and left a single sentence on the hotel notepad: Tonight. Same place. The building was glass and steel in the financial district, the kind of quiet power I used to walk into without blinking. At exactly ten I stepped out of the elevator into a minimalist conference room. A woman in a severe black suit waited with a thin folder.“Ms. Vance,” she said, using the last name I had almost forgotten. “Thank you for coming. Certain parties have been monitoring the dissolution of your former company. Assets were undervalued. Contracts buried. Th

I spent the day moving through the city like a woman who still belonged to someone else.I opened a new bank account under my own name. I called the lawyer who used to handle my contracts before I signed everything away for Gabriel’s smile. I bought new lingerie—black lace that left nothing to the imagination—and left it in the trunk of my car so it would never touch the drawers in that house. Every small act felt like lighting a match in a dark room. By evening my pulse was steady and mean.I didn’t go back to the same hotel. I chose a different bar three blocks over, darker, quieter, the kind of place where the bartender didn’t bother with names. I ordered the same strong, cold drink and sat with my back to the wall. Part of me hoped he wouldn’t find me. The larger, hungrier part already ached for the exact weight of his hands. He walked in twenty minutes later. No hesitation. He crossed the room like the floor had been built for his stride alone, slid onto the stool beside me, and

I walked until my feet hurt and the city lights blurred. Somewhere between the quiet residential streets and the neon edge of downtown I found a hotel with a bar that didn’t ask questions. Dark wood, low lighting, the kind of place where people came to forget their names for a few hours. I sat at the far end of the counter, ordered something strong and cold, and stared at the condensation sliding down the glass.I didn’t look up when the stool beside me shifted.A man settled into it like he owned the space. Tall. Broad through the shoulders. Dark suit that looked expensive without trying. He didn’t speak at first. Just ordered whiskey, neat, and let the silence stretch until it felt deliberate. When I finally glanced sideways, his eyes were already on me. Grey. Steady. The kind of gaze that didn’t flinch from wreckage.“You’re not here for the drink,” he said. Voice low, rough around the edges, like he had spent the day giving orders and was done being polite.I almost laughed. It ca

I came home early. The key turned in the lock the way it always did, soft metal against metal, and the house exhaled its usual evening quiet—vanilla from the diffuser, the low hum of the refrigerator, the faint tick of the clock in the hallway. Three years of that quiet. Three years of folding his shirts the way he liked, of leaving my own name on the shelf so his could take up more space, of smiling when he said 'you’re the best thing that ever happened to me' while he was already planning the next time he would push my sister’s thighs apart.I set my bag down. My heels clicked once on the hardwood and then I stopped.Because the quiet wasn’t quiet at all.A low, wet sound. Skin meeting skin. A mattress complaining under weight. And then her voice—Hannah’s voice, the same soft one that used to ask me to braid her hair when we were girls—breaking open on a moan.“Harder, Gabriel… fuck, say my name.”I didn’t move. My hand stayed on the banister. The hallway stretched in front of me l
