Chapter 1
Gian POVI sat very still, as I watched the Human Resource Manager slide back gracefully into her high-backed chair, behind the vintage wooden table. Miss Murphy, a middle-aged lady, wearing a gray suit, with her black hair pulled back away from her face in a loose bun.I kept my fingers crossed, holding my breath, waiting for the decision. It has been my dream to work in New York University, my alma mater, where my mom and dad also graduated."Sorry for making you wait, Miss Kasdeya... " she gave me a faint smile, and laid my resume on her table. She left me earlier to talk to the university president, Mr.Andrews, her expression was hopeful then, but now ... she looked more serious.I smiled back nervously, as I waited for her to continue. Still hopeful to get a positive result."Well, Mr. Andrews is very impressed with your resume. You were always on the dean's list ... Your participation in the university clubs and extracurricular activities are remarkable. Your volunteer work for

Chapter 2
Gian POVFernandez Estate is located in the countryside of New York. From the outside, it already showed extreme power and massive wealth. The heavily armed security guards let me pass through the huge electronic iron gates, with a gold letter F carved in the center."That F is surely bigger than me." I mumbled to myself, as I drove my yellow hatchback inside slowly on the wide cemented road.In front of the mansion was a roundabout, with a gigantic fountain in the center. A statue of a lion, ready to attack, was in the middle of the fountain."I wonder, why the lion? Lion is the king of the jungle. Does Mr. Fernandez see the world as his jungle? Or maybe ... he's just a fan of the Lion King movie." I chuckled, then opened the car window.I was overwhelmed by the beautiful landscape. Aunt Jodie would love living here. The tall trees, shrubs, bushes and garden were so alive like HD images. The bed of green bermuda grass was trimmed to perfection. The air smelled like heaven, so fresh a

Gian's POVThe servant's hall was a separate four-storey building located at the east side of the mansion, with its very own pool, pond and garden. On the first floor, there was a dainty lobby with padded chairs and a tea table. A television set hanging on the wall, a glass-door fridge full of fruit drinks ( I was dying to get one, perhaps a grape flavor), a coffee machine, and a counter with yummy looking cakes and pastries. Wait, is that a croissant?"This section of the building is for women only."Well, that explains the peach-colored curtains and colorful vases filled with flowers. My eyes roamed around."Men are prohibited here," she continued, and gave me a warning look, as if I would bring a man here. That would never happen."There are separate areas for the men and bodyguards, so you won't run into them when you're here. But everyone eats at the dining hall, for the cook's convenience.""I see," I nodded, following her and dragging my luggage, "this place is very nice. Like

Gian POVI met Calliope downstairs. She was seated on one of the padded chairs, holding a brown envelope."You have to sign this first," she said, and gave me the envelope, "it's a contract emailed by the Master's executive secretary."I scrutinized the contract carefully, read what was stated, then signed it. Stipulated were my duties and responsibilities, which Calliope already enumerated earlier, and the length of my employment, two months, which I should abide strictly."Now that I'm officially hired, maybe you can tell me why Mr. Fernandez prefers middle-aged maids?" when she hesitated, I reminded her of my duties, "I should know as the overseer, so any mistakes won't be repeated. How can I serve him better if I don't understand his concern.""Okay fine, I'll tell you," she twisted her lips with a long sigh, "it happened two years ago. A young woman was hired as a maid, she was about your age.""What happened to her?""At first, she was very efficient. Hard working. She did her j

Chapter 5
I cannot be late again.I ran through my house in my bare feet, looking in every nook and cranny to find my black sandals. I needed to have left the house twenty minutes ago to get to the school in time to pick up Rose as soon as school let out. I sighed to myself, knowing she's going to give me that look again for making her wait on me again.I was making good time today, I even wrapped up my latest chapter a whole hour earlier than usual, which only gave me false security in my ability to leave on time for once, but then my agent called to praise me for the new reviews my books had gotten online today. I didn't want to be rude, so I let her talk longer than I should have, and then now my freaking shoes are playing hide and seek.I decided I just didn't care anymore at this point, I'm already late and it's not like I'm getting out of the car, so why do I even need my shoes? I grabbed my purse from the kitchen table, slinging it over my shoulder, and then I pulled my keys off of the h

"Like hell are you taking my child away from me." I snapped at him, and he titled his head back."Rachel, you don't understand." He sighed. "She's in danger, you have to let her go with me."I widened my eyes at him. "In danger from who?" I asked, feeling faint. "I'm not letting her go anywhere without me." I told him, crossing my arms across my chest. He reached out to place a hand on my shoulder but I jerked away from it. "Let me come in and explain everything." He told me. "We've only got a day, two at the most, before they come here looking for her."I cut my eyes back to the front door. "You can't come in." I whispered. "My fiancé, he doesn't know anything about...""I see." Pedro pursed his lips. "Well, now's a good a time as any I suppose."I shook my head to him. "I'm not telling him!" I said. "Are you insane, he'd think I'm a total psycho if I told him the truth."Pedro rubbed his scruffy jaw. "I don't see what choice you have." He sighed exhaustedly. "You've got to let me ta

Chapter 7
I fixed the sofa for Pedro to sleep on, then went down to check on Rose. I couldn't wipe the smile off of my face when I peered in to see Rose curled up asleep against Logan. He was passed out too, his long legs hanging off the foot of her bed and his mouth slack. The sight warmed my soul, and further solidified my decision to not go to Castrum de Petra.I walked across the hall and climbed into my own bed, laying back on my pillows and staring up at the plain old white ceiling above me. Going back would be bad. I've spent way too much time pushing down those memories, only bringing them up when I write them down in my books. At first it was therapeutic to write about what had happened to me, of course, my readers all think it is an elaborate work of fiction, but I know the truth. It felt good to know that it was all real, and to put it all together into a book so that when my memory does begin to fade, I'll have that to fall back on, but now...Thinking about it now, all these years

Chapter 8
When Logan got home a couple hours later, we tried to keep our cool front going. He cooked us some steaks, and suggested we eat them out on the back patio, but Pedro had convinced him he had some kind of allergy and needed to stay inside so that Logan would not notice the huge burned spot on our grass.Conversation over dinner was cheerful. Pedro did seem to actually like Logan, although I knew he still had his reservations about it.We all cleared our plates and helped clean up the kitchen before the three of us put Rose to bed. Once she was out, Logan excused himself to shower and Pedro and I sat down on the couch together."When do you have to leave?" I asked softly as I pulled the throw blanket down to cover my cold feet.He pursed his lips. "We needed to have gone tonight, but I guess now it would be too late."The idea of not having Rose with me hurt me more than any hurt I've ever felt. "I don't know if I can..."Pedro reached over to pat my knee. "It will be hard, but I want t
