Chapter One Hundred and Eighteen

Minnesota was colder than Canada.

Not harsh. Just different.

The wind felt sharper against the skin, like it didn’t care who you were or what you had been through. When Aria stepped out of the taxi with her father, she pulled her coat tighter around her body and looked up at the pale sky.

This was it.

No Greyson mansion.

No servants.

No luxury cars waiting.

Just a small rented apartment in a quiet neighborhood with bare trees and parked cars covered lightly

Chapter One Hundred and Forty SevenRichard ended the call slowly, placing the phone down on his desk as if it were fragile. For a few seconds, he remained seated, staring at nothing in particular, replaying Alice’s words in his head. Then he heard it.A faint creak from the doorway. Not loud. But loud enough. He turned immediately.Damien was standing there. He hadn’t knocked. He hadn’t announced himself. He was just there, leaning slightly against the doorframe like he hadn’t planned to be seen. For a second, neither of them spoke.Richard’s eyes moved to his son’s face, searching for something — anger, reaction, sarcasm, anything.Damien’s expression gave nothing away. But he had heard.Richard knew he had heard. This was the fourth name crossed off the list. The fourth person who had either walked away or never walked in.And this one… this one had sounded promising.“Damien,” Richard called carefully, standing up from his chair.Damien didn’t respond. His gaze shifted briefly to

Chapter One Hundred and Forty SixAlice stared at her phone for almost five full minutes before she finally pressed the call button. She had already saved the number the previous day, when everything still felt exciting and full of possibility. Now the screen looked different. The same number, but it carried more pressure than it had before. She inhaled slowly as it rang.Once.Twice.On the third ring, the call connected.“Richard Greyson speaking.”His voice was calm, controlled, the kind of voice that belonged to someone used to authority.“Good afternoon, sir,” Alice said, forcing her tone to remain steady. “It’s Alice Morgan. We spoke yesterday regarding the psychiatric position.”There was a slight shift on the other end. “Ah, yes. Miss Morgan. I was expecting you tomorrow morning.”That small sentence made this harder.“Yes, sir. That’s actually why I’m calling.”A pause.“I hope there isn’t a problem,” Richard said carefully.Alice swallowed. “There is, sir. I won’t be able to

Chapter One Hundred and Forty Five“I got a job, Mom!”Alice dropped her bag on the small dining table, her voice bright and breathless as she kicked off her shoes near the door. The apartment was modest but neat, the curtains pulled wide open to let the late afternoon sun pour in. The scent of tomato stew lingered from the kitchen. Her mother stepped out, wiping her hands on a towel. “You’re serious?” she asked, eyes widening. “Alice, don’t joke with me.”“I’m not joking!” Alice laughed, running toward her. “I actually got it.”Her mother pulled her into a quick hug, holding her a second longer than usual. “Thank God,” she murmured softly. Then she pulled back, hands on Alice’s shoulders. “What kind of job? Where? Tell me everything.”Alice grinned and sat down, still catching her breath. “Okay, okay. I had two interviews today. Both went well. One is at a private clinic downtown. Assistant psychiatric nurse. Good environment, stable hours.”Her mother nodded quickly. “That’s good. T

Chapter One Hundred and Forty FourRichard Greyson paused by the doorway before stepping fully into the room.Damien was sitting at the edge of the bed, not moving, not reacting to anything around him. He wasn’t asleep. He wasn’t restless either. He was simply there, staring ahead at nothing in particular, as though the world in front of him no longer required his attention. There had been a time when Damien filled every space he walked into. His presence used to feel strong, almost commanding without effort. Now he looked smaller somehow. His shoulders curved inward. His face had lost its usual sharpness. Even his eyes seemed distant, as if whatever thoughts lived behind them had retreated too far to reach.Richard studied him quietly. The change hadn’t happened overnight. It had been gradual. A little less conversation each week. A little less reaction. A little more time spent sitting in silence. He cleared his throat softly before walking further inside.“Damien,” he called in a c

Chapter One Hundred and Forty ThreeOne Year LaterIt had been a year since Clara was sentenced.Time had moved forward for everyone else. But inside the Greyson house, it had barely shifted at all.The sharp sound of metal hitting the floor broke the silence. The cup rolled slightly before settling on its side.Doctor Amber Rose rushed in immediately.Damien was already awake. And already in the middle of one of his episodes. The sheets were tangled around his legs, the bedside table pushed out of place. The chair near the window lay on its side. A lamp had been knocked down. His breathing was uneven, his hands trembling in a way that had become far too familiar.“Damien,” she called softly, trying not to startle him further as she stepped closer. His eyes moved across the room like he was still somewhere else entirely. She spoke to him the way she always did during moments like this — calm, steady, patient. It took time.It always did.Slowly, his movements lost their urgency. His b

Chapter One Hundred and Forty TwoThe ocean stretched wide and calm before them, its surface glowing under the late afternoon sun like something untouched by trouble or consequence.John leaned back against the cushioned lounge chair, his sunglasses shielding his eyes as he watched Betty run along the edge of the water, her laughter carrying across the private stretch of sand. Magdalene sat beside him, her legs tucked beneath her as she flipped through a glossy magazine she wasn’t really reading. It had taken years for his life to look like this.Years of careful choices.Years of knowing when to step forward and when to stay silent. And if he was honest with himself, years of benefiting from things he never truly earned. He had seen the news before they even boarded the flight.Clara’s face had been everywhere.Headlines.Panels.Speculations.The kind of downfall that turned someone from untouchable to exposed in a matter of days.He hadn’t felt shocked. He hadn’t felt sympathy eith
