Damian looked at the security chief for a few seconds.

"Was my father's original statement stolen?" Damian asked.

The security chief nodded and said,"It is. The archive inventory attests to its removal prior to the room's clearing. Initially, it was transferred apart, but the final record indicates that it was subsequently kept with the missing ledger."

Emily glanced at Thomas Reed. Everyone's attention now turned to him, as he had been with them throughout the search.

"My name was mentioned in your report on your investigation, as you stated," Emily said. "My father's statement, you said, mentioned Victor and me. Did you realize it had been transferred to this location?"

Thomas nodded. "I wasn't sure what happened to the initial report, but I was aware that your father had been compiling information on Project Eclipse."

Damian's expression became harsh. "Do you really expect us to believe that you are so knowledgeable about the inquiry but have no idea where the most crucial document went?"

Thomas replied, "I'm telling you what I know." "I was told to leave your parents' house that night. When I came back, the office had been forced open, and papers were gone." I've spent years attempting to understand what transpired, but I can't tell you something I never personally witnessed. "

"So why does your name continue to appear in records related to this case?" Ryan asked.

Thomas faced him. "Since I was employed by Emily's parents and in charge of security, anyone wishing to conceal the truth might have used my name or position to give a transfer the appearance of legitimacy."

Once again, Sophia examined the inventory. “Without the authorization of transfer, we won't be able to identify who ordered the transfer of the materials.”

Another sheet was taken from the archive folder and placed on the table by the security boss.

"This is the transfer record that is left," he stated. "Even though the inventory number matches the entry in the ledger and the statement, the original approval is no longer available."

Sophia read the page carefully. "Through a private firm affiliated with Victor Knight's executive office, the transfer was organized."

The record was examined by Damian carefully. "Is it possible to ascertain who handled it?"

“We can't do that from this page alone," Sophia said. "There is a contact mentioned, but we need to verify the individual's identification and decide whether they provided the instructions or simply got them."

She flipped the paper to face the others.

Emily felt her stomach contract as soon as she saw the name.

Thomas Reed.

Thomas received a stern glance from Ryan. It was difficult to make out what Damian was thinking.

Thomas remained silent for a few seconds as he examined the recording.

"I did not authorize this transfer," Thomas stated.

"Then tell us why your name is here," Damian demanded.

Thomas's gaze ascended to him. "I cannot explain a record that I have never seen. But I can tell you this: if Victor organized the transfer, he may have used my name because he knew I had been engaged in your father's investigation."

Damian approached the table. "Or you're giving us yet another convenient explanation."

"We need the truth, Damian, not another accusation we can't substantiate," Emily said softly.

Her face showed less anger as Damian watched her. He remained by her, his shoulder brushing hers, near enough.

Ryan realized it. Emily ignored him as his jaw clenched.

Beside the inventory sheet, Sophia made a note of the transfer. "Before the archive was cleared, the papers were moved together. Both the ledger and the original statement were meant to be removed from official storage by whoever organized this."

"And they knew precisely what was in those materials," Emily remarked.

He looked down at the two recordings.

He said, "Perhaps." "But there's one possibility we haven't thought of."

"What possibility?" "Ryan wondered.

Thomas stopped.

"They might have wanted us to eventually discover this record if someone used my name to transport those papers. The transfer wouldn't have just been about concealing the evidence in that scenario."

Damian's stare intensified. "Do you suppose somebody wanted us to trail them?"

Before we determine what the transfer means, we need to establish who was in command of the destination, according to Thomas.

The company reference at the bottom of the page was tapped by Sophia. "This gives us a starting point. I can look up the company registration and track the location where the documents were sent."

Thomas' name was scrutinized once more by Emily. Although she wanted to believe the man who had finally offered her knowledge about her parents, she couldn't disregard what was right in front of her.

Victor was implicated by the data.

Thomas was indicated by the transfer record.

And the first declaration that may account for both was still absent.

Damian grabbed the page.

He gave Sophia the order to "discover the destination." "None of us can be certain whose story we are hearing until we find out where those papers landed."

Thomas was silent.

Emily pondered for the first time since his return if he was afraid of what the omitted statement contained or what would happen if they eventually read it.

Ryan Carter had based his existence on the idea that losing control was a tragedy, but losing money was a hardship. Both were slipping through his fingers that morning.Ryan's financial director was across the office desk, holding a report he'd been putting off for weeks. The statistics were ruthless. His only remaining chance was the merger that was supposed to save Carter Holdings after reckless investments had depleted the company's funds and creditors were demanding repayment. The director said that "the merger committee may retreat if they understand how serious our position is."Ryan loosened his tie. "They will not hear it from us," he said."They have already requested updated financial information. And there's another issue. Legal benefits tied to your marriage are part of the arrangement. If your divorce becomes public before the merger closes, those benefits might vanish," the financial director said.Ryan looked at him for a while.Emily had applied for a divorce after fin

Everyone had been fooled by Ryan Carter's smile that covered the fact that his empire was falling apart—except the guys who wanted their money back.By nine o'clock that morning, two investors had threatened legal action, three creditors had already called and his chief financial officer had placed a folder on his desk that was so thick that it could bury the last of his confidence. Ryan hardly gave it a look."How much longer can we keep them away?" Ryan asked his financial officer."Not long enough," his financial officer replied. "Our reserves have been depleted by the investments you authorized. We won't have the liquidity to fulfill our commitments if the merger fails," he added.Through the glass wall, Ryan stared at the city below. He had thought for years that money could solve any issue as long as he moved quickly enough. All of his secretly made choices were now having an impact.“The merger will proceed,” he said."And the divorce?" asked the financial officer carefully. "T

The living room was quiet after Sophia's phone call, so quiet that not even the ticking wall clock could break it.Emily sat still, staring at the instructions on the table. Her parents' residence had no guard because someone had made arrangements for it. Someone else had made sure that any effort to get in touch with the police would be reported. And before her parents could divulge what they had found, they passed away."Is the investigator able to find the other signature?" Emily asked.Sophia put her phone down and said, "Not yet. He claims the paper is being authenticated, but Ryan's father is already connected to the removal of the guards in the first authorization. In the records that go along with it, Victor's approval is evident."As he stood by the window, Damian's expression became more stern. "Then we have enough to demand Victor's answers. There's no need to spend another week chasing papers while he controls the narrative," he said."What if he refutes everything?" Emily

Even after Emily had read that sentence three times, it remained just as terrifying.Make sure there are no guards at the Carter residence by midnight. When that command was written, her parents were still alive. Beneath the order was Margaret Carter's signature, and someone had made sure they wouldn't be protected."Tell me they've checked it," Emily requested.Sophia's voice remained cautious. “They have validated the signature, but they are still looking into the document's origin. We are unable to ascertain whether Margaret was aware of your parents' impending deaths,” she said.Emily put her hand on the side of the table. The quietness felt unbearably heavy, and the flat seemed too warm all of a sudden. Margaret took her in after the first guardian because incapable of taking care of her, managed her fortune, and decided what she should learn about her family.Emily had years of protection from someone who could have aided in destroying if the document was real."Could you give m

Even long after the boardroom door had closed, Victor's parting remarks remained with Damian.Your father wasn't the only one who signed someone's future away.Damian remained motionless in the hall, considering the threat. For a long time, Victor had used his brother's notoriety to protect his own position. His confidence began to crack as the board questioned the statement's authenticity. The appearance in Victor's eyes, however, was not that of a defeated guy.It had been the gaze of a guy getting ready to destroy the evidence before it could destroy him.Emily noticed the change in Damian's expression. She had witnessed his anger, withdrawal, and great uncertainty regarding their connection. This was different. He appeared to be a guy who had eventually understood the extent to which his uncle would go.Damian's eyes remained on the closed doors, even as she stretched for his hand. She paused for a second, wondering if he had perceived something in Victor's caution that he was not

With a loud click, the boardroom doors slammed shut behind Damian.Every chair was occupied. Calm and confident, Victor Knight sat at the head of the table, a substantial document folder resting in front of him. Although none of them appeared inclined to defy him, the board members appeared uncomfortable.Damian immediately noticed the folder."What have you said to them?" He questioned.A faint grin appeared on Victor's face. "What your father ought to have admitted years ago," he replied.A few minutes later, Emily, Sophia, Ryan, and Thomas entered the boardroom. Thomas' presence immediately wiped the smile off Victor's face.Victor spoke sharply, "I didn't ask you to invite all these people.""Neither was I asked to witness you rewriting my father's history," Damian answered. "Still, here we are."Victor moved the copies of the contentious statement toward the board members after opening the folder."Victor disclosed that his brother acknowledged manipulating corporate payments and
