LOGINDamian's last words hovered over the archive chamber.
None of them could be sure whose narrative they were hearing until they found where the records had vanished.
Emily glanced at him and said, "What are we going to do about everything that is happening between us as we continue to seek answers?"
Damian's expression changed. He realized that she was no longer discussing the missing paperwork.
"Emily, this is not the right place nor the time," Damian said quietly.
"When I ask you anything that counts, that's always your response," Emily said. "You need time to sort something out, whether it's a problem, a meeting, or something else."
From the other side of the table, Ryan watched them. Although his jealousy was obvious, he refrained from speaking this time.
Damian lowered his voice. "I'm trying to deal with issues that I never believed I would have to deal with."
Emily said, "I am as well." "I can't continue standing next to someone who stares at me as if I have to show my worthiness of his confidence," she continued.
Thomas averted his gaze, granting them whatever little privacy the jam-packed archives room allowed.
Damian seemed ready to grasp her, but he stopped himself.
"I didn't want you to feel that way," he replied.
"There's a distinction between desiring something and actually making it occur," Emily replied.
Sophia's phone rang before Damian could answer. She looked at the screen, then walked away to answer the phone.
"Hello, this is Sophia Hart," she replied.
The call lasted less than a minute. Her face had turned pale by the time she returned.
"What happened?" Emily asked.
"The legal department of Knight Global sent my office an official alert," Sophia said. "They are requesting that we surrender all copies of the Project Eclipse papers. They claim that the records were gathered illegally and include private business data."
Damian's face hardened. "Who signed it?"
"Victor Knight."
Ryan let out a short, hollow laugh. "He's aware we discovered something."
"He knows enough to be concerned," Damian responded.
Sophia turned to him. There's still more. The message states that we may be subject to litigation if we divulge any more information. Emily is specifically mentioned.
Emily sensed the impending threat.
Victor was no longer content to remain concealed behind outdated records. He was prepared to point right at her.
Even if Emily's fingers were gripping the edge of the table more firmly, she replied, "Let him sue me." "I'm not giving him proof about my parents just because he wants to intimidate me."
Damian faced her. "You won't have to take him on alone."
Emily examined him. She wished for a moment that she could believe those words would bridge the gap between them. Yet she always remembered the uncertainty in his eyes when discussing the baby's paternity.
"I need more than just defense, Damian," she stated. "When things become difficult, I need to know you won't begin to question me again."
He had a strained expression. "I have never stopped caring about you," Damian said.
"That's not what I asked," she said.
Ryan moved uneasily. He couldn't help but feel penalized watching Emily beg another guy for anything he hadn't provided her.
"There's no need to ask him to choose you again," Ryan said.
Emily spun quickly. "Ryan, I'm not requesting that anybody choose me. I'm making a decision about what I can accept."
Ryan noticed Damian's gaze. "Keep out of this," Damian said.
"Then stop making her promises to someone's wife," Ryan said in return.
Emily positioned herself in between them, but Damian came ahead.
"That's enough," she said. "Neither of you is allowed to make my life a competition."
Again, Sophia's phone vibrated. She gazed at the latest notification, and her brows furrowed.
She replied, "This was posted on the public announcements website of the Knight Global board." "Victor has called an urgent board meeting, and it is happening tomorrow morning."
Over her shoulder, Damian read the announcement.
The aim was to deal with a corporate secrecy breach and worries about the company's management.
Damian said, "He's getting ready to challenge my position."
Thomas carefully observed him. "Victor could attempt to eliminate you before anybody gets to read the records if he believes they pose a danger to him."
Damian clenched his jaw. "He's not going to have the chance."
"Don't underestimate him," Thomas warned. "He has been making others take the fall for his choices for years."
Damian glanced over from the statement. Victor was now attacking both of them: her through legal threats and Damian through the company he had worked so hard to establish.
Sophia extended her hands to Damian.
He looked at their clasped hands, and surprise briefly replaced the protective expression on his face. Emily didn't do it for him to trust her or console him regarding the baby. She did it because she wanted to be by his side, but she couldn't continue doing so without honesty.
"I'll meet Victor no matter what happens tomorrow," Emily declared. "But I'm not going to let this investigation break me apart while I wait for you to decide whether you trust in us."
Damian remained looking at her. "You shouldn't have to,"bhe said.
"Then show me," she replied.Across the table, Ryan diverted his gaze. But he realized he had no right to bring Emily back into a marriage he had already messed up, even though his hands were clenched at his sides.Damian's phone rang just as the group was about to exit the archive area. In silence, he picked it up and listened.
Then his expression changed."What do you mean the board has already received it?" Damian asked. He listened again for a few seconds."Who wrote the statement?" He asked. There was a little bit of hesitation. Damian gently lowered the phone.Sophia glanced at him. "What happened?""Victor has shared a document with the board," Damian said. “He claims that my father orchestrated the initial financial controversy.”The breath left Emily's lungs. Damian's father has been away for years. Victor was again using his name to protect himself. However, Damian's focus was fixed on just one line of the paper. The declaration purportedly included Damian's father's signature, confirming that Emily's father was the mastermind behind the fraudulent transfers.
A date that was three days before the death of Emily's parents was below the signature.
Thomas caught Damian's eye. "Is this the statement you mentioned to us?" He asked.
Thomas's complexion grew instantly pale as he gazed at the display. He muttered, "No." "I don't recall that statement." He then glanced at Emily. "Someone has changed it."
Ryan Carter had based his existence on the idea that losing control was a tragedy, but losing money was a hardship. Both were slipping through his fingers that morning.Ryan's financial director was across the office desk, holding a report he'd been putting off for weeks. The statistics were ruthless. His only remaining chance was the merger that was supposed to save Carter Holdings after reckless investments had depleted the company's funds and creditors were demanding repayment. The director said that "the merger committee may retreat if they understand how serious our position is."Ryan loosened his tie. "They will not hear it from us," he said."They have already requested updated financial information. And there's another issue. Legal benefits tied to your marriage are part of the arrangement. If your divorce becomes public before the merger closes, those benefits might vanish," the financial director said.Ryan looked at him for a while.Emily had applied for a divorce after fin
Everyone had been fooled by Ryan Carter's smile that covered the fact that his empire was falling apart—except the guys who wanted their money back.By nine o'clock that morning, two investors had threatened legal action, three creditors had already called and his chief financial officer had placed a folder on his desk that was so thick that it could bury the last of his confidence. Ryan hardly gave it a look."How much longer can we keep them away?" Ryan asked his financial officer."Not long enough," his financial officer replied. "Our reserves have been depleted by the investments you authorized. We won't have the liquidity to fulfill our commitments if the merger fails," he added.Through the glass wall, Ryan stared at the city below. He had thought for years that money could solve any issue as long as he moved quickly enough. All of his secretly made choices were now having an impact.“The merger will proceed,” he said."And the divorce?" asked the financial officer carefully. "T
The living room was quiet after Sophia's phone call, so quiet that not even the ticking wall clock could break it.Emily sat still, staring at the instructions on the table. Her parents' residence had no guard because someone had made arrangements for it. Someone else had made sure that any effort to get in touch with the police would be reported. And before her parents could divulge what they had found, they passed away."Is the investigator able to find the other signature?" Emily asked.Sophia put her phone down and said, "Not yet. He claims the paper is being authenticated, but Ryan's father is already connected to the removal of the guards in the first authorization. In the records that go along with it, Victor's approval is evident."As he stood by the window, Damian's expression became more stern. "Then we have enough to demand Victor's answers. There's no need to spend another week chasing papers while he controls the narrative," he said."What if he refutes everything?" Emily
Even after Emily had read that sentence three times, it remained just as terrifying.Make sure there are no guards at the Carter residence by midnight. When that command was written, her parents were still alive. Beneath the order was Margaret Carter's signature, and someone had made sure they wouldn't be protected."Tell me they've checked it," Emily requested.Sophia's voice remained cautious. “They have validated the signature, but they are still looking into the document's origin. We are unable to ascertain whether Margaret was aware of your parents' impending deaths,” she said.Emily put her hand on the side of the table. The quietness felt unbearably heavy, and the flat seemed too warm all of a sudden. Margaret took her in after the first guardian because incapable of taking care of her, managed her fortune, and decided what she should learn about her family.Emily had years of protection from someone who could have aided in destroying if the document was real."Could you give m
Even long after the boardroom door had closed, Victor's parting remarks remained with Damian.Your father wasn't the only one who signed someone's future away.Damian remained motionless in the hall, considering the threat. For a long time, Victor had used his brother's notoriety to protect his own position. His confidence began to crack as the board questioned the statement's authenticity. The appearance in Victor's eyes, however, was not that of a defeated guy.It had been the gaze of a guy getting ready to destroy the evidence before it could destroy him.Emily noticed the change in Damian's expression. She had witnessed his anger, withdrawal, and great uncertainty regarding their connection. This was different. He appeared to be a guy who had eventually understood the extent to which his uncle would go.Damian's eyes remained on the closed doors, even as she stretched for his hand. She paused for a second, wondering if he had perceived something in Victor's caution that he was not
With a loud click, the boardroom doors slammed shut behind Damian.Every chair was occupied. Calm and confident, Victor Knight sat at the head of the table, a substantial document folder resting in front of him. Although none of them appeared inclined to defy him, the board members appeared uncomfortable.Damian immediately noticed the folder."What have you said to them?" He questioned.A faint grin appeared on Victor's face. "What your father ought to have admitted years ago," he replied.A few minutes later, Emily, Sophia, Ryan, and Thomas entered the boardroom. Thomas' presence immediately wiped the smile off Victor's face.Victor spoke sharply, "I didn't ask you to invite all these people.""Neither was I asked to witness you rewriting my father's history," Damian answered. "Still, here we are."Victor moved the copies of the contentious statement toward the board members after opening the folder."Victor disclosed that his brother acknowledged manipulating corporate payments and
