Chapter Twenty Five

Emily tried very hard to process Vanessa's revelation. She did not believe someone that was as close to her as Vanessa could hurt her so much. Her recent discovery did not make it any easier for her.

“I cannot tell you everything over the phone, it is not even as black and white as it seems.” Vanessa said with a heavy breath.

“You cannot call me just to give me this half information. You have to give me more than that.” Emily urged her.

“I was involved in something, and somehow it required a lot from me. So I stumbled on somebody, I didn't know who he worked with. They just required me to get information about Damian Knight from Ryan.” Vanessa said.

“Why are you still trying to avoid the truth? Please make your stories straight. Did you give them the information they requested?” Emily asked.

“I wanted to give them but I eventually had to rethink,” Vanessa responded.

“Was there anything in particular they wanted to know?” Emily asked.

“They wanted to find out the secrets Ryan had on Damian, since they were rivals.

Sophia had been listening in through the whole conversation. Immediately Vanessa said that she looked at Emily.

“What did they promise to give you, for you to accept such an offer,?” Emily asked.

She did not answer the question right away. She waited for a few seconds before she answered.

“I was in a lot of debt. I was scared because the people I owed money to were starting to threaten me.” She responded.

“Why does it have to be Ryan?” Emily asked. 

“They promised to make everything go away, if I cooperated.”

“This must be a joke,” Emily said because she could not come to terms with that.

“Wait, you mean you lied to me, had sex with my husband and collated facts about Damian at the same time?” She replied.

“None of that was my intention. I did not even know you knew Damian.” Vanessa responded.

“Whether I knew Ryan or not is none of your business. It didn't change what you did.” Emily responded as rage started to build up.

“You also lied to your boyfriend that I was sad and lonely in my marriage and that I wanted to leave Ryan. Why Vanessa?”

She was quiet for a while before she answered.

“It was just something I made so that Lucas wouldn't wonder why I was spending all my time.” She responded.

“I thought you were my friend. I genuinely cared about you. But all you did was just use me for your own interest.” Emily replied.

“You even went ahead to meet with somebody who was working for Victor Knight. What is his name?” Emily asked.

Who are you asking about?” Vanessa replied.

“The man you gave the brown envelope at Carter Holdings, what is his real name?” Emily asked again.

“I didn’t get his name,’’ she answered.

Then Emily turned to Lucas and asked him what he remembered about the man.

“I think he called himself Daniel.” Lucas responded right away.

As soon as Lucas said that name, Emily recalled the fake investigator who paid her and Sophia a visit. 

“Daniel Brooks, yes that is his name.” Emily yelled it aloud as she told Sophia about him. And showed her the picture that Lucas took.

Lucas was astonished as he also took a look at the picture. Emily also explained to Lucas how the man had come to Sophia's house pretending to be a federal agent. He had come to their house bearing a letter from Emily's father and all.

“This is the same person that Vanessa had been working with.” Sophia said.

Emily has put the call on hold and Sophia has been waiting on the line. She resumed the call again, she asked Vanessa where and when she met Daniel Brooks.

“I first met him before the anniversary, and the second time I met him was a few days ago at Carter Holdings.” Vanessa responded.

“In the two encounters, did you hear him talk about Victor Knight?” Emily asked.

“I have never heard him say that name, but he said that his boss is a rich and influential man “ Vanessa responded.

“But I am sure you have heard him mention Damian.” She asked again.

“He has met him a couple of times.” she responded.

“You could have gotten the information you needed without having sex with Ryan. So why did you sleep with him?” Emiiy asked.

When she asked that quey, Vanessa suddenly became quiet. She refused to answer the question.

When Emily perceived that Vanessa didn't want to answer the question, she decided to change the question. “What information were you trying to find out from Ryan about Damian?”

“Daniel Brooks said that Damian was a very dangerous man and that he has powerful enemies.” Vanessa replied.

“Are you sure Daniel did not even mention the name of his boss?”

Instead of Emily to answer the question, she said something else instead: 

“You should be very careful,Emily. There are other people like Daniel Brooks. He is not the only one.” And she ended the phone call.

They all sat and wondered who else could be working with Victor. Is it who they already knew? Has the person tried to contact them before now?

Emily tried to call Vanessa. The phone rang but she didn't answer.

Immediately, Emily's phone beeped, she thoyit was Vanessa but it was a message from an anonymous number. “Don't ask Vanessa Further Questions Or Your Husband Won't Be The Only Thing You Will Lose.
