“Rachel.” I crouched in front of her, pulling her head to my lap. “Rachel, baby, please wake up.”

Tears blurred my vision as I tapped her cheek lightly. “I know I'm a terrible boyfriend, but please don't punish me this way. Please wake up, baby.”

Rick steered on her, before his eyes opened.

They were red. Almost the same color as his cheeks, but his face lit at my sight.

“Daddy?” He stared in disbelief. “Daddy!”

Then my son started to sob. “Daddy, I'm scared. Mummy is not waking up.”

I'd gone there searching for answers.I don't know what I'd been expecting, but a different kind of irritation filled my being. The moment I got into my car and shut the door, the anger shifted. It shifted to hurt.I couldn't help but imagine how much she'd have had to suffer.Trish was terrible, and if there was one thing she liked, then it was making people's lives miserable. She would've made my mom's life as terrible as she could. She'd have done and said things she shouldn't.She'd have made my mom feel less of herself.I wished my mom had stood her ground. I wished she'd snapped back, not allowed them to treat her how they did… I wished she'd let them know that they couldn't try any kind of trash with her.But she didn't.My face buried in my palms. She endured it all… “because of me.”This was messed up.Completely messed up.A small sigh left my lips, and I stayed in that position for a few more minutes. When I finally stared up, I caught his figure.Standing in the distance,

“Do you really want to talk about this now?” He asked, still rubbing his arm.I raised my brow even higher. “Yes,” then my arms folded across my chest, “Why? You don't want to tell me how you killed her and lied to me for so many years?”His eyes widened at the accusation. “What? No. No, I didn't kill her. I promise.”“Well…?”He bit his lower lip for a second. “Well, Trish wasn't too happy with Sarah living here as you'd expect, and since our marriage was still kind of fresh, I liked to do all she asked.”I almost rolled my eyes, because heck he never stopped. “Okay?”“So I didn't really argue about how she treated Sarah, and then one day, she… she slept and that was it.”My breath held and I was sure he did too. The words were followed by silence.A very thick one. “I'm so sorry, Lisa.” He finally broke it, but I couldn't snap back to earth. “I've felt so bad ever since.”“What on earth?” I shook my head, still trying to understand. “My mom slept and didn't wake up?”He nodded onc

His eyes were wide, clearly not expecting to see me.“Do you plan on making me stand out here forever?” I asked, snapping him out of whatever world he had been in.“Oh, sorry. Come in.” His voice was a little guarded, and it reflected on his look when I stepped inside. “Is everything alright? Did Cassie do anything from jail?”“I'm not here because of her.”“Oh?” He raised a brow. “I don't suppose you're here to greet me.”I almost laughed. “I'm here to ask about someone.”“Someone?”I nodded once. “My mother.”The surprise was clear in his expression. We barely ever talked about my mom when I still lived with him and it had been so many years since I brought her up.But I wanted to know the truth.Twenty eight years and I still didn't know about my mom. That had to change today.David was going to speak, when a voice cut him off. “What's going on here?”We both turned to where Trish was walking down the stairs. The moment she spotted me, her expression twisted.“You.” The one word wa

    – Lisa Red –“Morning, babe.” Drex greeted with a stretch, pushing himself up to a sitting position.“Hey.” I moved over to press a short kiss on his lips, ruffling his already rough hair.He looked like one who'd had a good night's sleep, which wasn't a surprise considering how great things had been going for him at the moment. Especially in his business. His eyes dragged down my dressing, and he smiled. “You heading to Rachel's?”My shoulders lifted in a shrug. It still felt a little unreal that she was no longer battling with cancer. These few months had to be the most terrifying for me, having to watch my sister go through that.Every day since I found out, I'd visit her. Even now that she was alright again, I still ensured to go see her. Even if it was just for a few minutes a day.Drex had been with me through it all. He'd been a shoulder I cried on, and an ear that listened to every of my fear.We even prayed together once in a while, and I couldn't be more grateful to have him

“One night when I was one, she had spent the entire day working and was exhausted. Her body aching from all the times she had to carry me.” I continued, sitting straighter when he did the same.“As she was walking, she passed out. When she woke up, she was in a luxurious mansion, the room alone as big as Cassie's parents house.” I remembered how she'd explained that part so detailed, and how I'd laughed.“Turns out, David had seen her faint and took her to his house. I have no idea why he chose his house and not the hospital like a normal man should,” but then again, what did I know about romance?Richard chortled, clearly very interested.“A nurse took care of her, and then he had a driver send her home.” I shook my head. “Trish had tasted luxury for a moment, and wanted more. So she researched this guy, then spent the next eight weeks passing around his company's building, just so she could meet him by 'coincidence'" I air quotes the last word.“Are you serious?”“Yeah.” I laughed w

“What on earth are you doing here?” I snapped, walking over to grab my son off her lap. “Rick, haven't I told you not to talk to strangers?”Trish stared wide-eyed at my head as she stood. “Stop being dramatic, okay? And why am I just learning that you had cancer for months?”My brows furrowed. “How the hell do you know that?”“Is that really the important thing right now?”“Yes. Yes, it is.” My voice was sharp, irritation crawling up my skin, because after everything, I really didn't need her spoiling the mood.Richard walked out of the kitchen just then and the guilty look on his face answered my question.“You didn't tell her, did you?” My voice was gritted.“She asked how you've been, and I—”“Richard! This woman was the reason we fought the last time, are you really asking for another month of silence or what?” I had to draw in a breath as my fingers curled tightly.Rick was here.I couldn't lose my cool with him here.“Come on, baby,” I lifted my son in my arms, “let's go anywhe
