Richard didn’t come out of the study until almost noon, and by then the whole house already felt off. Eve had been up since early. She sat on the edge of the bed for a long time staring at the floor, then forced herself downstairs for coffee she didn’t want. Cole was already near the kitchen when she got there. He didn’t say anything. He just looked at her long enough to mark that she was accounted for and moved on. The constant checking had stopped feeling temporary a long time ago.
