We walked back into the dining room like the last twenty minutes hadn’t happened.

My legs felt disconnected from the rest of me. Every step made the mess between my thighs shift — both of them, still warm, still sliding out of me no matter how tightly I pressed my legs together. Richard’s hand stayed at the small of my back, light and proprietary, guiding me to my chair as if he’d only taken me aside to discuss something dull and administrative. Adrian came in a few seconds after us. He did

  • His Father's Claim.   The Board Decides

The decision came through late the next afternoon.Eve knew it was different the moment Richard’s study door opened harder than usual and his voice carried into the hallway without the usual controlled filter. She was in the living room when Grant and Cole both appeared within a minute of each other, summoned without explanation. Sloane came down the stairs a few seconds later. Whatever had arrived, it required everyone.Richard stood behind the desk with a printed page in his hand and the tightest expression Eve had seen on him since the review began.“The board has issued its first formal set of interim measures,” he said. He didn’t sit. “Effective immediately. Temporary leave is extended to additional senior parties connected to the exposure. That includes me.”The room went still.Grant was the first to speak. “They’re putting you on leave.”“Yes.” Richard’s voice stayed flat. “Outside counsel recommended it. The board accepted the recommendation. I retain limited authority to man

  • His Father's Claim.   Cole’s Turn

Cole left the house before anyone else was fully awake. Eve heard the front door close in the grey early light and knew exactly where he was going. The same quiet exit Grant had made the day before. No announcement. No discussion. Just the formal process pulling the next person out of the house and into a room with outside counsel and a record that would not stay private. She stayed in bed longer than usual after he was gone. The house felt different without Cole’s constant presence moving through it. The monitoring had been so steady for so long that its sudden absence left a strange hollow in the mornings. Richard was already in the study — she could hear the low rhythm of his voice on an early call. Grant’s room stayed quiet. Sloane’s door remained closed. Eve finally got up, dressed, and went downstairs. The kitchen was empty. She made coffee and stood at the counter drinking it while the house sat in an unfamiliar stillness. For weeks Cole’s checks had been part of the walls.

  • His Father's Claim.   Grant’s Statement

Grant left the house early. Eve heard the front door close just after seven. She was already awake, sitting on the edge of the bed in the half-light, listening to the house settle around the absence. No one announced it. No one needed to. Everyone knew where he was going. Richard stayed in the study. Cole maintained the watch with the same quiet consistency as always, but the silence around him felt thicker. Sloane kept to her room for most of the morning. The usual low-level tension in the house had sharpened into something more specific: waiting for the first of the sons to sit in a formal room and answer questions under the same process that had already taken statements from the women and produced the leaves. Eve went downstairs around mid-morning because staying in the room only made the waiting louder. Cole was near the kitchen when she entered. He looked at her, registered her presence, and said nothing. She poured coffee she didn’t want and stood at the counter drinking it

  • His Father's Claim.   Statements

The first statement request for Grant arrived the next morning in writing. Richard came out of the study holding a printed page and the same tight expression he’d been carrying since the second leave. He didn’t call a full meeting. He just found Grant in the hallway and handed it over without ceremony. “They want you tomorrow,” Richard said. “Off-site. Outside counsel present. Cole’s request will follow within the day. I’ve delayed the timing as much as I can. I can’t stop it.” Grant read the page in silence. His jaw worked once. Then he looked up. “They’re putting us on the record now.” “Yes.” Grant folded the paper and slipped it into his pocket. He didn’t look at Eve, who was standing near the kitchen doorway close enough to hear. He didn’t look at Sloane either. He just said, “Understood,” and walked away toward the back of the house. Cole received his notice an hour later. He read it, nodded once, and said nothing. The lack of reaction was almost worse than Grant’s visibl

  • His Father's Claim.   The Second Name

The second leave hit the house before breakfast was even finished. Richard came out of the study with his phone still in his hand and the same closed look he’d been wearing for days. He didn’t sit down. He just stood at the head of the table where Grant, Cole, Sloane, and Eve were already present under the current rules and delivered it straight. “Another temporary leave went through overnight,” he said. “Closer to the center this time. The board is not slowing down. Outside counsel wants additional statements from everyone directly connected to the exposure, including the two of you.” He looked at Grant and Cole when he said it. “I’ve pushed back on timing, but I can’t block the requests entirely. They’ll come here or the statements will be taken off-site. Either way, it happens.” No one spoke for a few seconds. Grant set his cup down harder than necessary. “They’re coming for us now.” “They’re coming for the exposure,” Richard said. “You’re part of it. So is everyone at this t

  • His Father's Claim.   The Next Move

The call came the next morning while Eve was still in the kitchen staring at a cup of coffee that had gone cold. The phone Cole had left buzzed once. She picked it up. “Be ready in thirty minutes,” Cole said. No greeting. “Someone’s coming to get you.” “Where?” “Back to the house. Pack what you brought.” The line went dead. Eve stood there with the phone in her hand and felt the floor tilt under the day. Two days in the apartment. One follow-up statement with Lena. One hard, wordless fuck over the table. And now she was being pulled back. The temporary removal hadn’t lasted. Whatever had happened on the board side overnight had changed the calculation again. She packed the bag without rushing and without slowing down. There wasn’t much to put in it. When the knock came she opened the door to find Cole standing there alone. He took the bag from her hand, checked the apartment one last time, and nodded toward the elevator. The drive was quiet. City sliding past the windows. Eve
