I should have known something was wrong when the pavilion lights were still on at 1:17 a.m.

By tradition, the place should have been empty—dark, silent, waiting for tomorrow’s vows. Instead, golden light leaked from backstage, and low, breathy sounds drifted out. Laughter. A growl. A voice I knew too well.

My heart pounded so hard it hurt. My palms went slick against my phone as I clutched it like a weapon, like if I held it tight enough I could stop whatever was happening before it became real. I told myself it was nothing—decorators working late, a lost guest, anything but what my gut was already screaming.

I crept closer anyway. Because I had to know. Because Cassian had never given me a single reason not to trust him. Because four years of I love you’s and fated-mate promises couldn’t end with a half-open door and bad lighting.

The side door was cracked. I pushed it open a little just to see inside clearly.

And everything I’d built my future around shattered.

Cassian—my Cassian—had Lyra pinned against the wall, her legs wrapped around him, my wedding dress bunched up around her hips like it belonged to her. The lace train dragged across the dusty floor with every thrust.

I couldn’t breathe. My chest caved in, ribs squeezing so tight I thought I might crack. It felt like my whole body was trying to reject what I was seeing.

He buried his face in her neck, voice rough with lust. “Fuck… you feel so good.”

Lyra laughed breathlessly. “Better than your little human ever could?”

The words felt like a slap I didn’t see coming.

My knees buckled. I grabbed the doorframe to keep myself from falling. Everything felt too bright, too loud, too real. I wanted to scream, to run, to disappear, but my feet were rooted. Couldn’t look away. Couldn’t unsee the way his hands gripped her thighs greedily.

They hadn’t noticed me yet.

They were too lost in each other, too wrapped up in the lie they’d built while I was home folding lingerie and blushing at Nova’s teasing.

Just hours ago I’d been standing in front of my mirror, holding up that white lace set Nova had shoved into my suitcase with a wicked grin. “Trust me, Aria,” she’d said, “Cassian’s eyes are going to fall out of his head when he sees you in this tomorrow night.”

I’d blushed like an idiot, folded it carefully, tucked it away with the rest of my dreams; the dress bags, the shoes, the little gifts for his pack family. Tomorrow we’d graduate, marry, and finally be official. He’d chosen me—his fated mate, the human girl from the slums who somehow ended up with the golden-boy werewolf. He’d promised me everything: safety for Dad’s treatment, a place in his world, a future where I didn’t have to fight alone.

Nova had sprawled on my bed, teasing me about blushing like a virgin. I’d thrown a pillow at her, laughing. She’d caught it mid-air—werewolf reflexes—and warned me gently about Lyra hanging around Cassian too much lately. I’d brushed it off. “Lyra is just friendly,” I’d said. “And Cassian loves me. The bond confirmed it the moment we met.”

I’d believed every word.

Now those words were haunting me.

Cassian thrust harder, growling low. “She is just a means to an end. The bond will strengthen me. Make me look perfect in front of Father tomorrow. Once I secure the rank, I can keep you on the side as long as I want. She will never know.”

Lyra moaned, nails raking down his back. “Do you love her?”

He stilled for half a heartbeat. Then he pulled back, looked Lyra dead in the eye, and sneered.

“Love a human? She is weak. Pathetic. Always clinging to me like I’m her savior.” He drove into her again, roughly. “I’m doing her a favor.”

The rage boiled over.

I shoved the door open so hard it slammed against the wall.

They froze.

Cassian’s head whipped toward me, eyes wide with shock. Lyra’s smug smile faltered for half a second before curling again.

“Aria—” Cassian started, pulling out and fumbling with his pants.

I couldn’t hear him over the roaring in my ears.

“You bastard,” I whispered. Then louder; “You fucking bastard!”

Lyra slid down the wall, adjusting the ruined dress like it was hers. “Oh honey. Didn’t anyone tell you that eavesdropping is rude?”

I strode forward, shaking with fury and grief. “That is my dress. My wedding. My life you are ruining.”

Cassian stepped in front of her, hands raised. “Baby, listen—this isn’t what—”

“Don’t.” My voice cracked like ice. “I heard everything. Every word.”

His face paled. For a moment guilt flickered—but then his jaw hardened. “Fine. You heard. So what? You need me, Aria. Your father needs me. Marry me tomorrow like planned, and I will still give you everything—money, medicine, status. You can even have my children. Just… look the other way.”

Look the other way.

I laughed—a broken, ugly sound that didn’t feel like mine. Then I slapped him.

The crack echoed. His head snapped to the side, a red mark blooming instantly.

Lyra gasped dramatically. “How dare—”

I slapped her too. Harder.

She stumbled back, clutching her cheek.

I grabbed the wedding dress off the floor—my beautiful, ruined dress—and threw it down, grinding my heel into the stained lace.

“You are disgusting,” I spat. “Both of you. All your pretty words, Cassian—every ‘I love you,’ every promise—was this what you meant? Using me? Mocking me?”

He reached for me. “Aria, wait—”

I pulled the engagement ring off my finger and hurled it at his face. It bounced off his cheekbone.

“I’m so disappointed in you,” I said, voice trembling but clear. “I trusted you with everything. And you threw it away for… this.”

Something raw flashed across his face—pain? Regret? But it vanished behind anger.

“You will regret this,” he growled. “You need me.”

“I’d rather die.”

He lunged to grab my arm—too fast, too strong. His shove sent me stumbling back, shoulder slamming into a metal rack. Pain exploded down my side.

For a second guilt crossed his eyes again. Then he shielded Lyra behind him like I was the threat.

I backed away, tears burning but refusing to fall.

“I won’t be there tomorrow,” I said. “I will never love you again.”

And I ran.

Into the cold night, away from the pavilion, away from the man I thought I knew.

Away from the future that had just crumbled into ashes.

  • His Father's Mate   Chapter Thirty Seven

Aria's POV The photograph was cold in my hands even though the room was warm.I stared at the man's silver eyes, catching the light at an angle that made them almost luminous even in an old photograph, even through twenty years of fading and careful storage. The same angle. The same quality of light that I kept catching in mirrors at wrong moments and telling myself was stress or bad lighting or anything except what it obviously was.My mother was laughing in the photograph. Genuinely laughing with her head tilted back, one hand raised like she was mid-sentence about something that had gotten away from her. She looked young. Younger than I had ever seen her, even in the earliest memories I had of her before the illness took the softness out of everything. She looked like someone who hadn't learned yet that the world was going to ask very hard things of her.The man beside her wasn't touching her. They were just standing close. His profi

Aria's POV Damian was in the hallway when I came to find him.He was just standing at the tall window at the end of the corridor, one hand braced on the frame, looking out at the dark grounds silently. I stopped a few feet away."Rhea told me about Mara," I said.He turned from the window. His gray eyes moved over my face the way they always did. "How much did she tell you?""Enough." I crossed my arms. "That she was my mother's closest ally. That she helped compile the original hunter list." I paused. "That she's been in hiding for twenty years and apparently decided tonight was a good time to resurface and call my phone."Damian was quiet for a moment."She reached out to me once," he said. "Three years ago. She wanted to know if I'd found you." His jaw tightened slightly. "I told her you were safe and didn't need to be found."I stared at him. "You knew she existed.""I knew

Nova's POV The throw pillow was softer than anything I had ever owned.I knew this because I had been holding it for the past forty minutes under the pretense of having somewhere to rest my elbow, which was absolutely a legitimate reason to hold a pillow and had nothing to do with needing something to grip when Darius looked at me a certain way.I was aware this was not my most dignified moment.Aria had disappeared down the east hallway followed by Rhea twenty minutes ago. Damian had taken a call in his office and hadn't come back. Which meant Darius and I were alone in the sitting room with nothing between us except approximately four feet of Persian rug and the very careful distance we had both been maintaining since he arrived.Darius sat at the other end of the couch. He wasn't doing anything provocative. He was just sitting there with his forearms on his knees. His profile was sharp in the low lamp light, the lin

  • His Father's Mate   Chapter Thirty Four

Aria's POV The voice from the phone call sat in my head the entire drive back to the villa.I kept replaying it against my will, the way it hadn't sounded threatening exactly but hadn't sounded safe either. “If you want to understand what you really are.”The words circled like something looking for a place to land.Outside the window the city was waking up slowly. Normal things. Human things. The kind of ordinary Tuesday world I had lived in my whole life before wedding dresses and bar kisses and glowing hands started rewriting everything I thought I knew about myself.Damian drove without speaking.I'd expected him to start arguments immediately. Instead he just drove, both hands on the wheel, jaw set, eyes forward. The villa gates opened as we pulled in. The morning light hit the stone facade and turned it gold for a moment before clouds shifted and took it back.He parked and turned off

  • His Father's Mate   Chapter Thirty Three

Damian's POV The empty bed shouldn't have hit me as hard as it did.I had seen worse. Pack violence. Territory disputes that ended in body bags. Boardroom betrayals that cost men everything they'd spent decades building. I had learned early that attachment was a liability and sentiment was a slow poison for men who needed to make clean decisions. But the sound Aria made when she stepped into that room—Not a cry. Not a gasp. Just a small, quiet collapse of breath, like something load-bearing had given way inside her chest without warning. That sound did something to me I wasn't prepared for.I glanced through the room fast, the way I'd trained myself to do since I was twenty-two and learned that survival meant reading a scene before your emotions got to vote. Stripped bed, no struggle marks on the floor, no overturned furniture, no blood. The IV stand was positioned too neatly—someone had moved it deliberately, not kno

  • His Father's Mate   Chapter Thirty Two

Aria's POV The glow was the first thing I noticed.Soft. Silver. Coming from my own hands.I stared at them in the dark of the archive room, fingers spread wide against my thighs, that cold light pulsing with my heartbeat like it had somewhere to be and was tired of waiting. The lanterns Rhea had lit earlier had burned down to almost nothing. The room was quiet except for Damian's steady breathing behind me, his arm still heavy across my waist, his chest warm against my back.My mother's journal lay open on the table. The last page I'd read before exhaustion finally dragged me under. Her handwriting blurred slightly in the low light in careful, slanted letters that looked too much like mine when I wrote fast and stopped caring about neatness. The blood must not fall into the wrong hands.I closed my fingers slowly. The glow faded. Not because I controlled it… more like it lost interest, retreating back under my skin li

  • His Father's Mate   Chapter Seven

ARIA I woke up like I’d fallen from somewhere high—heart racing, sheets twisted around my legs. For a second I didn’t know where I was. Then the thought settled in. Not my apartment. No traffic. No music through thin walls. No Nova pounding on my door because she’d forgotten her spare key again.

  • His Father's Mate   Chapter Six

At the Villa's guest wing, my suitcase sat untouched at the foot of the bed with its zipper still half-open from when I’d thrown things in earlier. The room was too big—high ceilings disappearing into shadow, dark wood floors polished until they reflected the faint moonlight coming through the wind
