The clock on the wall passed midnight, and my wife still had not opened her eyes.

I stood near the window with my arms folded, watching the green line on the monitor climb and fall. Maya had pulled the only chair up to the bed and sat so close to Esther that her knees touched the mattress. Neither of us had spoken in more than twenty minutes. The silence between us was not peaceful. It was the kind of silence that waits for someone to say the wrong thing.

A nurse came in, checked the fluid bag,

I turned the phone face down on the blanket, and my hand would not stop shaking. How do they know?Maya had gone quiet beside me. She took the phone, looked at the unfamiliar address for a long moment, and set it back down without a word. Then she crossed to the window and stood there with her arms folded, watching the afternoon light as though the answer might be written in it.“Do not reply,” she said at last. “Not yet. Not until we understand it.”“I was not going to.”“Good.”The knock on the door was so sudden that we both flinched. The doctor in the white coat came in with a nurse behind her and a folder held to her chest. She smiled the same warm, steady smile as that morning, but there was something purposeful in her step.“Mrs. Vance. I have your results.”My stomach tightened. “And?”“You have responded well to treatment. Your readings have been stable for several hours.” She pulled the chair closer and sat. “I would like to talk about discharge, if you feel ready.”Ready. I

I did not open the newest message. I only stared at the word Please until it blurred.Maya had wheeled me back to the room while I held the phone in both hands like something that might spill. The nurse had checked my pulse and left us alone. Now I sat propped against the pillows with the screen glowing in my lap, and the whole room seemed to be waiting for me to press a single button. Why would someone keep writing to me for weeks? What do they want?I could think of two reasons. Either they needed something from me, or they had somehow heard that I had left my job and wanted to know why. Neither possibility made my chest feel any lighter.“You have not touched it,” Maya said gently from the chair.“I am working up to it.”“That is allowed.”I drew a breath and opened the message. It was short. I read it slowly, one line at a time.Esther, I hope this finds you well. I have been trying to reach you for some time, and I am not sure whether you still check this address. I have often th

I woke before dawn with the same sentence still in my mouth. Something that might still be there.Maya had not pressed me last night. She had only squeezed my hand and told me to sleep, and I had, deeply and without dreams, as if the words had finally given my mind permission to let go. Now the room was gray, and the rain had stopped. A pale light crept along the edge of the curtain. Maya slept sitting up in the chair, her coat over her knees, her head tilted against the wall. The project was the first thing I thought of. A folder. A name. A small, stubborn idea I had once carried everywhere. I could see it as clearly as my own hand.Is it too late? Have I lost too much time?A nurse came in a little after seven, and Maya woke with a start. Behind the nurse came a doctor, the same woman in the white coat, and the morning assessment began. They checked my pulse and my blood pressure. They shone a small light into my eyes. They asked me how I had slept, whether the dizziness had passed,

ESTHERWhen I woke, he was gone, and my first feeling was relief.I lay very still, listening. The monitor kept its slow rhythm. Rain had begun against the window, a soft, steady tapping, and the light in the room had gone dim and yellow. The chair by the window where Frederick had stood for hours was empty. His jacket was no longer draped over its back.He left. He is not here.My chest loosened, an unclenching I felt all the way down to my fingers. Then, almost at once, a small cold voice asked a question I had not expected. Why am I relieved that my husband is gone?It unsettled me more than the pain in my head. A wife should not feel her lungs open the moment her husband leaves the room. I turned the question over and found that I could not look straight at it.“Esther?”Maya was leaning forward in her chair, a paperback closed over one finger, her hair loose now and her eyes tired. She looked as though she had not slept.“You are awake,” she said softly. “How long was I out?”“No

The email was still open on my laptop when I walked into my office, as if it had been waiting for me.Daniel must have left it that way. The screen glowed in the dark room, a white rectangle on the polished desk, and the cursor blinked beside the Hartwell and Company header. I did not turn on the lights. I stood over it in my hospital-creased suit and read it once. Then I read it again. The paperwork they expected is not the paperwork we sent.“Sir.”Daniel stood in the doorway with a tablet held against his chest. He had loosened his tie, and there were shadows under his eyes. He had clearly been at it for hours.“Tell me where we are,” I said.He crossed to the desk and set the tablet down beside the laptop. “I have been through the sign-out record. Sienna collected the Meridian documents from your office on schedule. Her signature is on the log, along with the time. There is no question that she took them.”“Then they were delivered.”“That is what I cannot confirm. The collection

“Say that again,” I said into the phone, “slowly.”Daniel did. His voice was steady, the way it always was when the news was bad, and I pressed my free hand against the cold glass of the corridor window while I listened. The payment delay had not stayed small. The finance team had received further inquiries from the vendors, and the inquiries were no longer polite. Two of them had written in the same week. One had used the word overdue in the subject line. Meanwhile, the Evolution module was still behind schedule, and corporate clients were asking when the promised release would be delivered. Fernando had called the office twice that afternoon, and Daniel had run out of ways to say that I was unavailable.Through the window, a short way down the corridor, I could see the door to Esther’s room. It was shut. Behind it, my wife lay with her face turned to the wall.I should go. I should stay. I cannot do both.“Why were these not settled in the meeting?” I demanded. “We sat in that room
